However, Peter quickly finds out killing is harder than it looks. Following the blackmailer's advice, he sneaks into the target, Terry's house, intending to stab him in the shower in an especially anxious Psycho reenactment. But as he approaches, Terry screams at a roach, spooking Peter into jumping out the window. Battered and bruised, Peter retreats to his apartment, where the mysterious voice contacts him again. This time, he gives a time limit - twelve hours. Peter gets desperate. After consulting Missy, he tries everything he can think of to take Terry out. His increasingly ridiculous plans include attempting to break into Terry's workplace, poisoning his coffee, and outrunning him on his daily jog, but all efforts end in failure. Utterly broken, exhausted, and drenched in sweat, Peter returns to his apartment at the end of the day to await judgment. RING. Peter contemplates not answering. RING. He looks at Missy and fidgets. RING. The phone switches to voicemail. The mystery caller commands him to answer and Peter trips over himself to pick it up. Upon learning the mission was unsuccessful, the blackmailer threatens to reveal Peter's dark secret - except that he calls Peter the wrong name. After being questioned, it's revealed that the mysterious blackmailer called the wrong number. Peter is in crisis - he almost (but not really) killed a man! Now it's Peter's turn to be questioned: why would he go along with the blackmailer's demands? In a compulsive outburst, Peter admits he's been terrified of the police finding out that he shoplifted Missy from the pet store.

When he confronts the drunk, the drunk tells him that the original story was nothing more than a desperate man looking for easy money. As the drunk walks away from the diner and the town, Ricky asks another patron Sam if the drunk was The Legend. Sam simply replies, "No, that was just a man.", indicating that whether or not the stories that both the patrons and the drunk told are true is ambiguous.
