- Geeta and Anil meet, gets acquainted with each other only to fall in love; they then get married but on their wedding night Anil is killed by bandits leaving a devastated Geeta who goes unconscious for a period of 4 days after which she loses her mental balance and is confined in a mental asylum. Several years later she does manage to recover, is discharged and enter into the real world only to find that Anil is still alive, now calls himself Ravi Kapoor and is in love with a young woman named Asha. The discovery of Anil triggers Geeta and she decides to make Ravi her own; eventually she gets out of hand and is re-confined in the mental asylum. A few days later she manages to escape, enters the couple's house and when Ravi is away she decides that she will settle scores once and for all with Asha - the one she believes is out to claim her husband.

- Widower Ram Kapoor lives a very wealthy lifestyle in Bombay, but is very lonely, as his only child, a son named Rajesh, lives abroad, and his aged dad, Diwan Bahadur, lives in the village. Ram frequently throws lavish parties to overcome this loneliness. This changes when Rajesh returns home, and he is able to convince Diwan also to return so that the three could live together. Shortly thereafter differences crop up between Rajesh and Diwan - initially on love and marriage; then on Caste issues; then the marriage of Rajesh, which is arranged with Diwan's friend, Thakur Janak Singh's daughter, Rukmani, while Rajesh wants to marry Monica. Things come to such a pass that Ram decides to leave, takes to women and alcohol in a big way, and becomes the subject of a big scandal. Ram returns home after Diwan and Rajesh apologize and agree to live together in harmony. This harmony does not last long as soon Ram finds out that his very own father and son had conspired against him in a charade to get him to return home just to avoid further scandal. Watch what Ram does this time when bitterness and acrimony reinstates itself in the Kapoor household.
- Childless Malti is married to a honest man, Kailash Nath, who one day brings home a newborn baby boy and asks her to take care of him. Malti names the boy Ashok, and brings him up as her very own. Thereafter she gives birth to two boys, Amar and Anand. When Kailash testifies against dreaded bandit & devil worshiper, Jabbar Singh, he is threatened with death. Jabbar is sentenced to be hanged, but before that could happen he is killed. Jabbar's son, Sheroo, avenges his father's death by killing Kailash. Sheroo is arrested by Kailash's friend, Inspector Om, and sentenced to 20 years. A dying Kailash informs Malti that Ashok is Devki's, his first wife's son, and makes her promise that she wil continue to love Ashok as her own, which she does, and Kailash passes away. When she returns home she finds out that Amar is missing, possibly drowned. She blames this on Ashok and starts hating him. Sheroo escapes from prison, abducts Inspector Om and holds him prisoner, whipping him regularly. Years later Ashok has grown up, receiving nothing but hatred from Malti; Amar is still missing, while Anand has fallen into bad company and frequents a prostitute by the name of Rekha. Then a shady underworld figure named Ranjeet is killed and the police arrest Anand and hold him in prison. This news shatters Malti, first the death of her husband; then she is told that she is his second love; then Amar goes missing believed to be dead; and finally Anand - who may face the death sentence. And all Malti is left with is Ashok - the one she hates the most.

They are tragically separated. He subsequently comes across a portrait of Ratna, and shortly after he meets a gypsy, Jhumri (also Hema Malini) who looks exactly like Ratna. Soon Jhumri is also able to recollect her past life, and her love for Prakash. This does not auger well with Rita Malhotra (Asha Sachdev) who loves Suraj, and Appa (Prem Chopra), the son of the leader of the gypsies (Madan Puri), who will not stop at anything to make Jhumri his wife. Appa steals the portrait, and instigates the gypsies against Suraj, so that he can marry Jhumri, and perhaps separate the two lovers again in this birth also.
- Based on the circa 2nd century BCE to 2nd Century CE, Sanskrit play "Daridra-Charudatta" by the famous Indian playwright Bhasa, "Utsav" faithfully follows Bhasa's story-line. Vasantasena, a courtesan who dances at the King Palaka's court hides in Charudatta's house while running away from the amorous attentions of the king's brother-in-law. She falls in love with Charudatta, though he is married and penniless. They have an affair. Meanwhile, the rightful heir to the throne - King Palaka's brother - escapes from prison. While he is being pursued by the king's troops, Charudatta helps him. The king's brother-in-law strangles Vasantasena when she refuses to submit to him and leaves her for dead. When Charudatta tries to have her jewels pawned, he is arrested for her murder. What happens to him and the other characters constitutes the final part of the film.

During this period Shekar starts developing liking for Neela but she is attracted to Avinash,Shekar meets Avinash as he is the only one who can convince Neela for marriage.Avinash convinces Neela by reveling the truth that he is suffering from blood cancer and has very less time to live.A broken heart ed Neela marries Shekar but still has soft corner for Avinash as a friend leaving Shekar suspicious.
