- Christine, newly widowed and consumed by the memory of a ball she attended age 16, decides to track down the men she danced with that night and discover their fates.
- Vienna, at the height of the Great Depression. Like so many others, Hans has no work, no money, nowhere to live. Having lost his livelihood as a taxi driver, he decides that the only solution is to kill himself. But just as he is about to drown himself, he sees a young woman dive into the river, obviously with the same intention. Without a thought, Hans pulls the woman out of the water and does his best to comfort her. Her name is Anna and she is only 18, but like Hans she no longer has the strength to go on living.

He has an accident. Olga takes him to the nearest sanatorium where everyone behaves very strangely to the newly-arrived patient.
- The old organist unwittingly witnessed the suicide of an unknown man. Before his death, he handed him an envelope with money for his daughter Klara, who lived in the monastery. The organist did not report the case to the authorities, but hid the suicide's corpse in the cellar. Little did he know that he was being followed by his unscrupulous neighbor, a shoe shiner, who then blackmailed him with the threat of a murder charge.

Liduska's parents are unhappy to see the girl's apathy, from which she only wakes up briefly when she hears the music.
