CINED-ENSAD. Papers on "The Art in a Crisis Context." One by Jorge Villacorta.
The Main National School of Dramatic Art (Peru) organized a Symposium during COVID-19: 'The Art in a Crisis Context'. Jorge Villacorta (or Jorge Luis Villacorta Santamato) read the paper: "Peruvian filmmaking art on IMDB:com [Internet Movie Database] during COVID-19. Case: Theoretically, a paranoid conspiratorial phone call." The paper is based on four sociological principal in relation with the art: 1) The field of art as a field of faith; 2) The consecration circuit that must follow an artpiece to become "legitimate"; 3) "popular aesthetic" as a perception that considers art as an extension of daily life; and 4) "aesthetic distance" as a perception interested in the style as a relational concept that compares formal characteristics of art pieces. With these four concepts, Jorge Villacorta analyzed why "Theoretically, a paranoid conspiratorial phone call" was ranked as the second most popular Peruvian movie in the crime genre (among 42 titles) this week (based on the results of the last week: October 25-November 1.) The analysis shows that after studying how IMDB structures the information, it was possible to take advantage of such structure, even though the American reality that generates IMDB is very different from the Peruvian one. The Peruvian "artisanal" film production cannot generate a website like IMDB, which is designed to support film production companies, even though it is pretended that it is supported by fans. This one is a convenient myth that disguises the capitalists interests behind the film production.
