Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Idoman to su (2023)
Stakes? What stakes?
I was skeptical at first. Another anime about a virtual world, where nothing the characters do really matters in the grand scheme of things?
Just like the happenings in every piece of entertainment don't really matter much in our world beyond our own personal, emotional investment in them. SLF makes you care about the game world and curious about it's mysteries and NPC inhabitants. The characters are colourful, unique, and easy to distinguish from each other. The action is great. The character relationships and interactions are endearing. There may or may not be a singing rabbit.
When the season concluded, I went and read the manga (also fantastic), and there is a lot more cool stuff on the way for anime fans.
Beautifully done. A worthy adaptation.
The Luminaries (2020)
Boring.
I could follow what was happening, but eventually didn't care. Costumes and sets are great. Acting is fine. I liked the occasional bird calls and the NZ scenery. Maybe this is mostly for fans of the book.
Outer Banks (2020)
Okay setting and premise, but everyone is insane and nothing makes sense.
As we have seen with many recent television and movie productions, writing was treated as an afterthought. Every decision by every character is completely illogical and serves only to stretch a movie worth of plot into a television series. Nobody communicates clearly, and everyone is incompetent. Acting was okay, but the script didn't give them much to work with. I blame Netflix.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Good production values. Not much else here.
First episode contains a bit of blatant leftist propaganda, but that is more of an annoyance than a problem. Male characters are boring, shallow stereotypes. Female characters are morally rudderless, though a few have room to grow. Looks like a setup for silly people doing silly things and not getting called on it because destiny, or patriarchy, or whatever.
Skip. I am obviously not the target audience. I'm having trouble conceiving who is... Do intersectional feminists like Satan-worship and cannibalism, now? If so, did they always, because that would actually explain a lot. (Just poking fun. I know you guys, like most people, are only evil by accident.)
If you can tolerate teenage drama and 90s lingo, go watch Buffy instead.
