Trautmann (2018)
Just a great sports film
A great film about a great Man City legend. In addition a great film about the period, filmed beautifully with excellent acting. A real gem.
The Expanse (2015)
Don't compare it to Discovery just enjoy it
Not since Battlestar Galactica was rebooted have we had a sci-fi series worthy of the term 'grand'. I'm not going to reveal spoilers other than say if you like serious sci-fi just watch it & enjoy.
A Christmas Carol (2019)
Explains all the knife crime in London
This isn't Dickens it's a nasty SJW, PC METOO Snowflake inspired piece of dark fantasy grafted on to the name A Christmas Carol. Nothing to do with Dickens.
The Witcher (2019)
Put simply it nails Witcher for TV
The title of my review says it all. Anyone giving this a 1 star review is either not a fantasy fan or has never seen a real 1 star film.
Vienna Blood (2019)
A must watch on the BBC
I watched it on the BBC where it's still available on the iPlayer. If you watch only one thing on catch up over Xmas make sure you catch this. Everything about it is spot on.
Mother! (2017)
The only emotion it stirred was boredom
Generally Art House films leave me cold because of their pretentious nature. At least normally we're spared them because they're relegated to the Film Students circuit. One for art house junkies only - be warned it is not a horror film.
The War of the Worlds (2019)
Best TV Adaptation to date
I have no problem in saying that. As someone who has actually read the book this is by far the best adaptation based on the book. It's set in Edwardian England, it doesn't rely too much on CGI, it properly explores the idea of living in England after the devastating Martian attack. To those giving it 1 & 2 stars it's worth remembering the only character named in the novel is Ogivly so I really don't understand all the negative reaction.
Krypton (2018)
I really tried to like it
The problem with this show is the lack of a coherent arc really. It really does jump all over the place. Add to the fact there are terrific differences in acting standards and you end up with a mess. If you compare it with say Gotham it simply hasn't managed to improve Season after Season. In fact the latest season is probably the biggest mess. To be honest I simply think they set it too far back starting with Superman's Grandfather was a mistake & I think looking back the show runners will realise that.
Another Life (2019)
I really fail to understand the low scores
It's genuinely good sci-fi after the first two episodes. I won't give away the plot but will say it's well worth sticking with if you like say Battlestar Galactica, The Expanse & similar shows. It has it's weak points but what show doesn't? Those giving it a 1-3 score are definitely expecting way too much from a sci-fi series.
Der Pass (2018)
Genuinely great series in the Bridge mould
Really good story, good acting, great scenery, spooky Krampus background theme Hans Zimmer music - watch it
Den 12. mann (2017)
A compelling movie
A movie about a true story of hope triumphing over evil. People need to remember the evil the Nazis were lest they resurface. Reviews giving this a negative review really have no business reviewing serious films.
Prospect (2018)
Good Sci-fi
Hard to add more than what the other positive reviews have said. It's original, solid, well acted well written sci-fi.
Titans (2018)
Solid, gritty and dark
A good start and could be the foil to Gotham even though it's in a different timeline. Depends how you like you comic genre I guess definitely has more than a touch of Dark Knight
Serenity (2005)
Loved Firefly love this
If you don't like sci-fi then don't watch this movie & don't give it a crappy rating it's that simple. On the other hand if you love sci-fi then make sure you watch it. Enough said.
The ABC Murders (2018)
Sarah Phelps vanity project funded by BBC
This is the second Christie novel the BBC have allowed Sarah Phelps to mangle. Adapting a novel as iconic as this means you at least have to stick to the the basic story and characters. But not Phelps, it's like she's in some fugue and just throws the novel out of the window. And no it's not OK for the BBC to do this and still pass it off as an adaptation just to try to get new new fans too lazy to have read the book.
How can you call it an adaptation when a major character Captain Hastings is just cut out completely? Oh and Inspector Japp dies of a heart attack which never happens in the book because he leads the investigation. Rupert Grints character is really a minor character suddenly given centre stage. Then we have the ridiculous scene of a search warrant against Poirot's house!
The BBC should from now on warm viewers all future adaptations have nothing to do with Christie's work apart from their titles and are attempts to attract Millennials in as viewers.
Hostage (2005)
Great Willis Movie
One of his best movies and one I haven't seen until recently.
Agatha and the Truth of Murder (2018)
Good Acting Insults Our Inlelligence
The idea that Agatha Christie's famous disapearance was linked to her solving a murder with a Chief Inspector being aware of her trying to solve said murder is frankly mad. There were 5,000 police, 15,000 volunteers & several aircraft looking for Christie at this time. Questions were being asked in Parliament. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was helping to look for her. But according to this film despite all this said Chief Inspector just lets Christie stay in house.
Daredevil (2015)
A comic book hero for Millennials
I'm conflicted about Daredevil. The acting has been consistently high. The storylines good to excellent and very dark. My biggest gripe & the reason for deducting 2 stars is the constant need to have Matt Murdoch deny he's Daredevil. It was OK for S1 but did we really need a no costume Daredevil in S3?
They Shall Not Grow Old (2018)
Simply the best WW1 Documentary ever
To call this a documentary is a massive understatement. Jackson has transformed black & white footage we have all seen into high definition colour footage with a soundtrack. It's overlaid with commentary from WW1 Veterans. The idea someone has given this groundbreaking piece of film a rating of 1 shows some people shouldn't be allowed to rate on IMDB.
This film honestly should be mandatory viewing in all UK schools.
Cults and Extreme Belief (2018)
Cults the 21st C menace
As a Brit watching this I have to say it was a great watch. I guess it made me ask why are there so many of these groups in the USA? Also how is it the wacky ones are allowed to be armed? This series does a great job of trying to understand this issue from inside the group and outside looking in.
Mars (2016)
Simply excellent
People trying to rate this as a drama are showing a level of stupidity all to common. It uses an excellent storyline to say what could be. To a great extent the acting doesn't matter because the story is so good. And people giving it a 1 because of the music need to grow up.
Informer (2018)
Excellent contemporary drama
I wanted to write this review just to counter the negative 4 star reviews from some people with comments like 'wooden acting typically British in that respect'. The subject matter is brilliant it explores the other side of terrorism. The really dark work police sometimes have to do to keep us safe.
Still Open All Hours (2013)
Stands up excellently in its own right
The very idea that David Jason could star in a 3 or 4 star series for several seasons is itself a joke. This is an excellent Brit comedy series the type of humour which is simply lost on some countries and possibly more recent generations.
The Beyond (2017)
If you don't like sci-fi don't review them
I am constantly amazed at the number of negative reviewers on IMDB for sci-fi films. If you don't like sci-fi then you won't like this film it's that simple. That doesn't make it a bad film or a 1 or 3 star film.
The film tells a good story for its budget. Deals with the interesting issue of how would we send humankind on dangerous space missions. Plus unless you've gone to the cinema to pay for it then it's well worth a watch.
