Constellation (2024)
Underrated
A show that truly screws with the mind and delves into the horrors of the edges of reality and the unknowns presented by the quantum realm which is not well understood and described by science.
One of the few shows that actually scares me, but in a good way, it's enthralling and pulls me into the terrors experienced by the characters experiencing their world in utter inexplicable disarray. I found it oddly relatable in a way, with many parallels to my life and how choices impact my path.
Sure a lot of it takes leaps from scientific ideas that may not be quite fully baked out, but it is sci-fi after all. It reminds me of one of my old favorite shows, Fringe. At first I wasn't convinced that the show was worth watching but each episode has pulled me in more and really satisfied my thirst for good mind opening sci-fi. I think it deserves a much higher score than what it has here.
Morbius (2022)
Worth seeing in the theater
I knew nothing about this movie before going.. so I had no expectations. I thought it was a really fun movie to watch, as a casual fan of Marvel movies. I also saw The Batman recently.. and I actually found Morbius much more enjoyable to watch. Batman was pretty cheesy to me.
So I was pretty shocked afterward to see how poorly rated the movie is. Yes the movie ended too soon.. it felt like it didn't have much of an ending. However I just took that to mean that it's a simple origin story setting up future movies. Admittedly that is a lazy approach but it's better than feeling like the movies being stretched too long with useless filler.. which I find the case with many films.
So if you want to see a really fun movie with exceptional sound and visuals, Morbius fits the bill for me. Just don't expect a masterpiece or a profound story.. it's clearly intended to be the first of many of the character (although given the abysmal ratings maybe that won't happen as they intended)
Moonfall (2022)
Hugely underrated
This is a sci-fi disaster action movie.. let's get that out of the way. Yes it's "dumb", but so are nearly all the others if you take them seriously. I thought that's why we watch them? For fun! This movie was a ton of fun to watch in the theater. That's exactly what I was hoping for, just a fun dumb movie that I could enjoy. My expectations were very low given the ratings, but I also knew that some of my favorite movies were panned by critics so I gave it a shot anyway. Glad I did!
Some of the actors were better than others but I don't think any of them were terrible.. they played their parts well enough. The plot and story probably deserve a lower rating but the dumb fun aspect is 8/10.
Black Widow (2021)
First movie I've watched in theater since pandemic
Given the critical praise this movie received, I was expecting something pretty good. Well, it wasn't. It was bad. I didn't enjoy it at all; it was just a mess of cliche and predictable scenes strung together for 2 hours of filler material.
It seemed like a children's movie, so maybe I would rate it higher if it were marketed at the 12-year-old preteens demographic.. but I don't think it was. Yet the writing and acting felt more shallow than most kid's movies. There's a (very one-dimensional cliché) villain and the villain is defeated by the superhero (in the most obvious way possible), then the movie ends. That's literally the whole plot.
I'll go ahead and mark this as a spoiler in case the ending wasn't already obvious after watching 15min of the movie. Regret driving an hour through traffic to watch this crap.
It had a couple mildly "funny" moments and it was visually impressive in some scenes so that's the only thing saving it from a 1-star review.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Really enjoyed even without seeing The Shining
I was completely clueless going into this movie about what it was about and reviews etc. I haven't seen The Shining but I have seen a lot of allusions to it in popular culture so some of the scenes referencing the first movie did seem familiar regardless. It took some time to understand what was going on with some of the characters and situations without having seen that movie but Doctor Sleep does a good job giving subtle explanations for people like to me understand the story.
Having said that, was really entertaining throughout and one of my favorites of the year. As others have said.. there have been a lot of crap movies as of late so this was refreshing to see. I'm glad that it wasn't completely full of gore and horror as I expected.. I'm not a big horror movie fan to be honest because I don't like gore but I also don't scare easily. This movie was not scary at all to me though there were of course some scenes that were (intentionally) painful to watch.
I plan on seeing The Shining sometimes soon and maybe giving this another watch after!
Shaft (2019)
It was so good
What's with the rating.. I just watched it the whole theater was laughing throughout and gave it a round of applause at the end. It was classic Shaft and hit every note of humor and didn't take itself too seriously. Samuel was excellent and pretty much every other character was perfectly cast. The story was spot on and it just felt right. The critics only get it right 50% of the time (at best) and they're wrong on this one.
Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019)
Under-rated, very fun, insane nonstop action
The first (modern 2014) Godzilla movie was higher rated for some reason, I think that's ridiculous. This sequel is MUCH better than that one was. Incredible action throughout, sure it's "dumb" but as far as disaster movies go, this one is tons of fun and there isn't a dull moment. I would highly recommend seeing it at an IMAX theater or similar while you still can.
Hellboy (2019)
The same critics who said "Us" was a masterpiece..
Yet another example of how useless critic scores are sometimes. I saw "Us" which was critically acclaimed and it was one of the worst movies I'd ever seen. Hellboy on the other hand was an absolute blast from beginning to ends, very entertaining. In terms of superhero movies why would you expect anything less than mindless fun?
I do agree that the gore was often gratuitous.. like really obnoxiously graphic. That's why it's not a 10.. because other than that I really enjoyed the movie (recommend seeing it in IMAX).
Us (2019)
The movie finally ended
I'm writing this just after the movie ended.. it was pretty awful honestly.. it didn't really go anywhere and seemed like it was being made up as it went along. Very very slow and drawn out scenes like they were just filling time. Acting was pretty poor although a few were mildly impressive. Just not happy that I spent the time to watch this and feel like it is massively over-rated.
Replicas (2018)
Alright here's the deal.. it's bad but entertaining
The first half of the movie I really enjoyed in a stupid but fun way.. couldn't understand the rock bottom ratings.. unfortunately it went downhill from there. The concept was interesting and I think they did a pretty good job with special effects given the small budget. The acting was generally pretty awful.. though the two main characters were at least passable. The actress playing the wife was so bad she legit seemed like a robot.
Other than that most of the concepts and plots fell apart toward the end and it felt very rushed. And we're left wondering about some things like why did the wife seem to be having heart issues while running and then it wasn't addressed at any point after.. like it was forgotten? This movie had potential I'll give it that.
A Star Is Born (2018)
Overrated.. not that great
The chemistry seemed very forced and not believable.. and every part of the movie was 100% predictable like I always knew what was coming next despite knowing nothing about the movie before hand. It felt more like a brief documentary of fictional singers. I do think Lady Gaga did a good job acting considering she isn't an actor.. Cooper did pretty well too but nothing special. The relationship never really developed and the characters were very shallow.. I felt almost nothing for them emotionally. The best thing about the movie was the audio recording there were some good performances.. but again didn't blow me away. The story was cliche and uninteresting. I don't know who it appeals to but I strongly feel that the movie has been drastically over-rated in terms of overall quality.
Downsizing (2017)
I couldn't understand the low rating.. until I kept watching
I was really enjoying this movie at first.. the first third of the movie.. then it went violently down hill. I cannot understand how they took such an interesting concept and made this pointless film with it.. I was genuinely interested with the social political and economic constructs the movie was exploring but then they completely lost footing and the plots evaporated and went nowhere. I'm saying this as someone who is scientifically minded and aware of the reality of climate change.. it's real.. but this movie didn't ultimately address it in an intelligent way. In fact it was embarrassing to see.
As others have said many of the notions put forth by the film didn't even make logical sense like the shanty towns and poor folk who somehow scrounged up enough money to be downsized but was so penniless they lived in utter poverty anyway. And the actual procedure of downsizing.. where does all their mass go? They just magically shrink doesn't even attempt to explain it. Or how about the fact that the shrunken town was so vulnerable to destruction. Anyway.. BIG disappointment.
Bumblebee (2018)
So many positive reviews.. did I see the same movie?
How low are people's expectations for transformer movies that they think this one was "good"? The plot was nearly nonexistent the movie seems to have almost no purpose. Not much happens from beginning to end.. zero plot development. The main character accomplishes nothing and her side kick was even more useless. Bumblebee does everything on his own aside from being brought back online. All the military characters are as cheesy and cliche as possible. Weakest ending I've ever seen in any movie of memory. 2 hours of nothing.. the only positive aspect was some comedic moments. I'm glad I didn't pay for the ticket. The 3D effects were weak as well so it doesn't even have action going for it. You could skip this movie you'd be missing nothing from the transformers story which was already thin to begin with.
Maze Runner: The Death Cure (2018)
Remarkably dumb and drawn out
I saw this movie at an IMAX theater for $4 as part of T-Mobile promotion. It honestly was only barely worth that. The entire movie was extremely predictable and just plain stupid. I don't know if it's accurate to the book and I haven't seen the other parts of the series, but the script was just ridiculous.
The ending climax scene just had me shaking my head at how nonsensical it was (let's not bother to back up the hovercraft another foot or two for dramatic effect). And apparently no one knows how to perform basic first aid.. inside of a hospital? The cliche and overdone "ha you missed.." "DID I?" scene that I saw coming from a mile away. The evil bad man character that is so one-dimensional.
Really it seemed like every single scene was a parody of every other teen movie because the script was so poor.
And holy hell did they draw out the scenes that were meant to be "sad" but just fell completely flat.. one of the deaths stretched on for 10min even though his character was barely in the rest of the movie and had no importance.
On the other end of the spectrum the movie killed off a main character for the most ridiculous reason that was entirely avoidable if the characters weren't complete idiots, and no one seemed to care about her pointless death.
All in all it's just a mind-numbingly stupid teen zombie movie with a bunch of artificial action sequences stuffed in. Worth renting and falling asleep to I suppose, or Netflix and chill?
