The Walking Dead: The Calm Before (2019)
The Best Episode of TWD
Enough said in the title. I've never cried or shaken about a television show before but I did tonight, and I'm not afraid to admit it.
Quite possibly the pinnacle of a 10/10 episode.
The Walking Dead: Chokepoint (2019)
Atmospheric and Creepy
I have to admit, I wasn't incredibly hyped for this episode originaly, but BOY was I proven wrong!
Last weeks episode was good but by no means incredible. The one major thing it had going for it was that it introduced one of my all time favorite characters from the graphic novels, Beta! If I was excited about anything surrounding this episode it would be that he'd have a more prominent appearance.
Anyhow, the atmosphere of the abandoned apartment complex this episode takes place in was incredibly creepy, even without the whisperers thrown into the mix. When Beta and his crew did show up this atmosphere was only amplified for me. The fight scene between him and Daryl was one of the best fights throughout the shows run and the smaller conflict that happened before and after that was just as entertaining. Still, if I had one complaint it would be that Daryl should've gotten beat up a bit more. Having the character beaten to a pulp before eventually getting the upper hand would've been a great way to show just how intimidating Beta really was in my eyes. Just a minor flaw though.
We get to see how the fair is coming along in the B story, as well as The Kingdoms confrontation with the Highway Men. This was all very well executed in my eyes and I look forward to finding out more about these mysterious characters. Much better characters than those god forsaken garbage people might I add, with the exemption of Jadis/Ann maybe.
All in all another stellar episode for a stellar season! I can't wait for what's coming next. And if you read the comics you know what I'm talking about!
BoJack Horseman: The Old Sugarman Place (2017)
A New Type of Story
The first time I watched "The Old Sugerman Place" I wasn't floored by it. In fact I found myself mostly bored. To this day I can't explain why this was. All I know is that it's a perfect example as to why rewatches can be important.
4x02 is one of the best episodes of the series from my prospective and it took me three viewings to finally see that. I think my delayed reaction may have something to do with the fact that this was a different type of story for the show. We've seen Bojack out of L.A before but this time it's without any previously established characters. Of course the B story for this episode is also something new. We get flashbacks about Bojacks family's past and establish an important relationship with his mother (a young girl at the time) in the process.
For me the aspect of this episode that I like the most is how these flashbacks reflect on what's going on to Bojack in the present. It's expertly crafted and could've very easily felt too on the nose. They're well written and make the viewer care about a character none of us could've cared less about originally.
Simply put, it's a work of art. An episode I'll rewatch for many times to come.
BoJack Horseman: That's Too Much, Man! (2016)
Heartbreaking, Expertly Crafted, and Strangely Comical
This is the episode where I (alongside most other viewers) truly started to realize that the dreaded "eleventh episodes" would be the darker chapters of this series. This is a format that stays true even today.
Now, when I say "dreaded" I mean that in the most positive way. While this episode isn't as great as "Escape From L.A" in my opinion it's more close to reaching that bar than any other episode in the series as of yet. I love every episode of this show but for me these are the two episodes that may never be beat, and maybe that's just because of the mood I was in when I first watched them. I don't know.
"That's Too Much, Man!" has everything going for it. Sarah Lynn was one of my favorite supporting characters up until her demise this episode and having her last moments be in Bojacks arms is both depressing and oddly heartwarming. Not to mention the visuals inside the planetarium just look amazing. I'm SO glad she played a major role in this episode and wasn't jus shoehorned in.
We also see how hard it is for Bojack to function without Todd or PC in his life. Penny showing up again was a suprise, but a welcome one, especially if you interpret what she says to him as a product of what her parents probably fed her so she wouldn't feel guilty. That makes the most sense to me considering it really wasn't all that long ago since she tried to sleep with him. There's just no way she really matured that much over the course of 2 years.
All of this culminates into what I consider to be the most shocking scene in the course of the show. Which as previously mentioned is the death of Sarah Lynn. I audibly gasped the first time I watched that part, and it takes a lot to get me to do that. Overall I consider this to be one of the best episodes of the series, and even in animation as a whole. Episodes like this are why Bojack Horseman is without a doubt my favorite show.
The Walking Dead: Who Are You Now? (2018)
TWD is Back!
Like the walkers themselves it seems that TWD died and came back, arguably better than ever.
9x06 had some of the best moments in all of season nine, and in my opinion, the last few seasons in general. Angela Kang (the new showrunner) is absolutely killing it! Between the awesome Whisperer reveal, the arrival of Magnas group, and Carols BADASS killing spree I can't help but find myself actually looking forward to the next episode more and more again.
In short, The Walking Dead is back baby!
BoJack Horseman: The Showstopper (2018)
Incredible
Episode 11 has always been a stable of sad (and genius) episodes of BJ. This episode is no exception to that rule. The last two minutes genuinely made me feel nauseous and I mean that in the best way possible.
BoJack Horseman: Escape from L.A. (2015)
My Favorite Episode of Television... Ever
Escape From L.A is simply a work of art. It's an episode the entirety of this season has been leading up to and it certainly doesn't disappoint. Bojack has always been amazing when it comes to blending comedy and drama and 2x11 is in my opinion the best example of this.
If I could rewatch an episode for the first time again it would be this one.
