Paul (2011)
Enjoyable in the usual British film made for America kind of way...
I enjoyed this film, I caught myself laughing out loud a couple of times, and spent most of the film with a happy grin on my face.
There is often something very different about British comedies financed by and made for America. The good side is they have some kind of happy grin warmness to them that I like. The negative side is that the cut of real British humour is often removed. During Paul I could not help (as I happily smiled along) that Pegg and Frost were holding back. For a lot of jokes I wanted to to carry on and 'finish it off' - follow the joke to its cruller, harsher, ruder, British end.
So, how was this "British American" comedy? I enjoyed it. If found funny but too long whereas this was about right. The jokes were constant, and I left the cinema happy to recommend the film to friends.
So... yep, I'd recommend you to go and see this film - you'll leave the Cinema with a happy grin, although maybe not aching from laughter.
The Fighter (2010)
Bale shines again. Great movie.
OK, lets get one thing straight first... Raging Bull is the best boxing film ever made and making comparisons with that film is pointless, but comparisons should be made. Both films are based on true stories, both are boxing films that look into the dark side of the characters, and both include amazing performances.
The Fighter contains some of the best acting performances of the year. Christian Bale is easily one of the best movie actors of our time (as Robert De Nero was once upon a time), and this performance again displays his adaptability into any role and again raises him up to the echelons of Nero and Day Lewis in modern cinema (if you only know him for Batman you need to rent The Machinist or Rescue Dawn asap).
The film drew me in and engrossed me totally, mixing scenes of action, family dis-functionality, brotherly love, romance - you name it and its in there. Wahlberg always seems a bit wooden to me (hence the lost star). Even when playing emotional scenes I always lack belief in his characters. This may be a personal opinion and doesn't detract from a great film.
Final word - you have to see this film. Ladies, it is much more than just a boxing movie.
Who Killed the Electric Car? (2006)
Electric cars are better for the environment
There have been some uneducated comments about electric cars here which I would just like to quickly address.
Electric cars are far better for the environment then petrol cars for three main reasons: 1. Oil is a non-renewable resource of our planet. Once it is gone - that is it - we will have no more.
2. Electric cars reduce localised polution - the kind that is turning all our children into astmatics.
3. When we are using power stations instead of Petrol to drive our cars government policy can control how we produce that energy. I.e. more environmentaly friendly sources such as wave/wind/solor power or even 'green coal' can be used instead.
