The Pantry Ghost Documentary (2013)
Totally fake
Who in their right mind would put their hands up against a ghostly presence? Also, why would taking the door off the pantry release the ghost when it opened the door every night at 12:34 (roughly, give or take a few seconds) and could just come out on its own? Also, 12:34... Yeah right; 1,2,3,4. Soooo original it hurts. There are so many inconsistencies and the attic shot is set up. The camera pans back to where he wants you to look and waits, how did he know he was going to see anything at that location exactly? Suddenly, there it is. When he claims to have seen his daughter behind the dresser, it looked like his own shadow to me. Seeing the ghost huddled in the corner looked like a shot out of The Ring. Actually his ghost was similar too. Also, had most people seen anything close to the image in the pantry door, I think they'd leave right away. I know I would.
The Mountain (1984)
Devastating story
This movie is about as hard-core as old Africa gets. It was an excellent movie, well acted, based on truth and utterly devastating. I highly recommend it.
The Nun (2018)
More Ed & Lorraine Warren rubbish!!
While they brought us one or two delightfully scary stories (the Amityville Horror was scary to read and The Conjuring was worth watching), they fail to impress with their b/s about these being true stories and really, everything they come up with is pretty much done to death!! This was horrendously stupid, badly thought out and frankly boring.
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
Very good movie!!
I think I understand why some have rated this as boring and pointless - because they are used to instant gratification and gore in horror movies. This was none of that, but more the type that requires careful concentration, patience for the story to unfold, because it does, and the ending makes sense indeed. Its a good story about good triumphing over evil, purity of soul and thought and the power of good will. Its very gothic yet there are small modern twists that intrigue; such as certain nuances in the architecture or pieces of clothing, jewelry, I'm not sure if that was intentional or an oversight, but it added to the fantasy.
His House (2020)
The road to hell is paved with good intentions!
Being South African, I am used to African culture and the terrifying superstitions that go along with it. A deep seated respect for the elders, the ancestors and a genuine fear of witchcraft spell out African culture and often dictate how lives are lived here. This movie perfectly captures those fears and beliefs, but there is more to this. I believe this encapsulates survivors guilt. The intention to save another from a terrible fate, going awry and ending in tragedy must surely leave a deep wound on the mind that is self destructive and requires an honest introspection and eventually acceptance of the role one may have played in the loss of that life. It amounts to wrestling with one's own demons and a process of self forgiveness and acceptance that that pain and guilt will always live on inside you. Very interesting movie. I loved it and I so enjoyed the creepy moments. When Rial tells Bol the story from her mother, I felt once again as if I was camping out in the pitch dark of the African veld and listening to a wise, old African woman telling me a moralistic tale with a terrifying, supernatural consequence, and nothing but open veld and darkness surrounding me. It's pretty creepy. Unless one comes from a deeply superstitious culture, you may not appreciate that feeling, however the movie captures it perfectly. Totally worth a watch. I loved it. I've got a pretty good case of the creeps now, so it was certainly effective.
Sala samobójców. Hejter (2020)
Extremely Pertinent
This movie gives an insight into what happened with the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It shows how easily smear campaigns are created, people manipulated, how we just don't bother to fact check enough, and how we allow that portal to the cyber world to control our every thought and action. This is a form of terrorism, this is how campaigns are won and lost and I found this movie so reminiscent of The Great Hack, as if this was born of that, a fictional story from a terrifying set of events that took the world by storm and has not and will not abate. This movie is pretty terrifying psychologically as it shows us how vulnerable we all are and how our vicious gossip can exacerbate peoples pain to the point of madness. Excellent, I highly recommend this movie to the thinkers out there.
Hostile (2017)
Never wait too long to say, "I love you!"
This movie was so much better than I expected. I'm not a fan of sad endings, but this movie surprised me and stirred up many emotions from feeling their frustration, to absolute high tension as I got through the scary parts, which did not disappoint at all, to profound feelings of sadness and regret. It makes you think. Worth every minute I spent watching. I highly recommend it to people that want something more than just cheap thrills.
Dirilis: Ertugrul (2014)
Although fictional history, a good window on early Turkish customs
My husband and I are currently watching season 1. We are so hooked, from episode 1 already. I am loving learning a little about their customs and another side of the Muslim faith that we don't often hear about - respect, love, kindness and utter devotion. What I'm really enjoying is seeing the other side of the story for a change. We are so brainwashed by the stories from the Christian point of view that it's nice to see it from the other sides perspective. Although based on legends, there's always some truth in there somewhere, and it's interesting to see that the Templar Knights were not so pure after all. This has made me want to investigate the beginnings of the Ottoman Empire, the Templar Knights and learn a lot more. I personally don't enjoy extreme gore, so I like that the fight scenes don't include dismemberment and such. Mostly nothing more than cuts and blood spray. This is our new favourite series and I'm loving every episode. It's so hard to practice control and not binge watch it.
Hai Phuong (2019)
Awesome action
I've become so tired of the Hollywood hype, the perfect American Dream always being pushed in American films. I've been watching a lot of foreign films lately and have to say that this was one of the really good ones. I absolutely enjoyed the action and the difficult livestyle depicted was much more relatable. Human trafficking is a huge problem and it's good to have movies that bring attention to the pure horror of it all. I will certainly be looking out for more Vietnamese films. Thank you from South Africa.
Glitch (2015)
Hooked!!
I'm South African and love Aussie movies and series. This is highly engrossing from the first scene. Loving it. Just one question... Do these people never bath???? 😳
Stephanie (2017)
Moments of WTF!
The only thing that kept me awake and watching was my husband's snoring. Doesn't anyone know how to write a story anymore that makes sense or has some sort of understandable closure? Such an horrendous shame to see excellent actors waste their talent on this drivel. So sad that frightening horrors seem to be a thing of the past now. The good ones are rare gems indeed. This was SO not one of them.
Girl from Nowhere (2017)
Disappointing
Visually breathtaking, displaying the rugged Cape in all its glory, but the story is pointless and boring. Why do South African movies tend to disappoint so often with painfully bad acting and ambiguous storylines when we have such terrific actors and directors in this country? Being proudly South African myself I always look forward to sitting down and watching a movie straight out of my home country with issues and places I can relate to, but then I end up disappointed. There are only rare exceptions to those experiences with movies such as Chappie and District 9 and even though my understanding of the Afrikaans language isn't great, Afrikaans movies tend to be much better as well as those acted by our black actors regarding issues relating to their experiences. Faith Like Potatoes was another rare exception - totally wonderful movie. Girl From Nowhere just lets one down with a dragged out plot and pointless ending. Maybe I should have smoked a joint while watching it so I could gain more clarity perhaps? What a waste of the last hour and a half.
