Keeping Faith (2017)
Gripping, Sllow Build British Drama At Its Best.
First thing I have to say is Eve Myles is just incredible in this role. Her acting is 100%, in fact everyone's acting is great.
Direction and production is really good, kept me hooked and gripped all the way through all 3 seasons.
The family troubles are treated so sensitively and the complexity of relationships is shown in all it's glory, especially from the viewpoint of the children.
Although it deals with common themes none of it feels clichéd or tropey and although this is told from a female perspective, with the main male characters being quite despicable, it doesn't feel one sided
It's a slow build but that's not a bad thing. I would say it's because the main focus of the story is how Faith struggles and fights and keeps going despite everything that happens.
Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)
What a shame
I was really looking forward to this film. I ignored my fears that releasing straight to Netflix meant it would be bad and held out hope. If this was a low budget sci fi or a tongue in cheek space opera it might be forgiven but sadly this was a serious attempt to make a major sci epic. For a director like Snyder to release a film so badly produced and directed is inexcusable. It lacks soul, finesse or story line. The acting is sub par, the action is clunky, the fight scenes are poorly choreographed and telegraphed and the special effects aren't good enough to make up for Many scenes seem to be lifted directly from other films and the whole film is riddled with cliches and over used tropes.
This was originally conceived as a 2 part Star Wars film and I'm so so glad it was turned down.
Napoleon (2023)
Big swing... Big miss
I really wanted to like this movie. Joaquin Phoenix is an amazing actor as is Vanessa Kirby. The story of Napoleon's life, whether you think of him as good or bad, is incredible and I feel you could almost accidentally make a good film about it but... obviously not.
One thing the real Napoleon wasn't was a buffoon and yet that's unfortunately how Scott has portrayed him, which is poor as he has had a hugely positive effect on France and how it functions as a country.
I got the distinct feeling that Scott didn't like any of the people he was writing the film about and, on the whole, found the entire subject boring.
Although the film didn't feel boring or long it's not particularly interesting. I think it's possibly because the film jumps all over the place, it's full of short scenes that often don't seem to fit together and leave you thinking "wait, what?"
I understand historical inaccuracies in films and don't think it's a huge problem but there are so many in this film and they actually lead to a feeling of insult towards the characters and France as a nation.
Time to retire I think Mr Scott.
Leave the World Behind (2023)
A bit pointless
Although I don't particularly enjoy them, I totally understand enigmatic endings however, when the ending leaves the entire film unresolved and unexplained then it leaves the film almost entirely pointless.
Such a shame because every other part of the film is great. It's engaging, mysterious, gripping, well shot, well directed and well edited but every single element of mystery is left unresolved.
I haven't read the book but having spoken to people who have, I'm assured that it doesn't end like this.
The message behind the story it's one that is very relevant in todays world and with just a little bit of explanation the message could have come through.
RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) (2022)
A "Must see before you die" movie.
This film is true epic like Lord of the Rings or the Godfather trilogy. I was gripped from beginning to end and didn't feel like it was 3 hours long. The direction is great and the production matches it. The acting is great, especially the lead characters. The overall story was great and the smaller cut away story's fired in seamlessly. This film made me laugh, shocked me, made me cry and made me ashamed of my country's past. I wish I'd seen this on the big screen.
I wasnt able to see the the original language version so I watched it originally in Hindi and then the English Dub. There's quite a difference between the English dub and the subtitles and imo the script used in the English dub was better than the subtitles.
Moonfall (2022)
Really good trashy fun.
Anyone who left negative reviews of this film obviously didn't read the synopsis before watching.... or took note of who directed it.
A a Roland Emmerich movie about a hollow moon crashing into earth was never going to be high Sci Fi BUT, if you take off your lab coat and pick up the popcorn you'll have fun.
The memorable quotes section for this movie should be about half of the script and the special effects are great.
Morbius (2022)
Such a shame.
The film tries to do too much and cover too much ground and ultimately fails at both. The script is cheesy, the direction is mediocre at best and although the fx are done well they don't seem to correspond with the special abilities Morbius has. It feels like it's been brutally edited and half the film is missing. There's not really an excuse for making bad films like this these days.
Intergalactic (2021)
Bad writing, bad sfx
I mean no offence to the creator/director but this is not good. Schlocky, clunky and poorly written. God knows how this was nominated for Baftas. Couldn't get through ep1 but what I saw was prisoner cell block H meets bad doctor who.
Sing 2 (2021)
You can't watch this and not enjoy it!!
Me and my little one were great fans of Sing 1 so the bar was set high but this is great fun. Simple and fun story line, really great music, great singing and good laughs for all ages and it gets better the more you watch it!!
Encounter (2021)
Great film. Ignore the bad reviews
I think what might have spoilt the film for some is that it was billed as Sci Fi when it's not and doesn't try to be. It's mysterious, suspenseful drama and it's quite a sad story. Definable worth a watch.
The Addams Family 2 (2021)
Lacklustre and Dull
From a childs point of view it was a tad boring, not very funny and made no reference to the first film.
From an adults point of view it was boring, the story seemed thrown together in 5 minutes and the whole film felt unimaginative. It all felt like it was phoned in.
From either side, the jokes and references were too grown up to be funny for kids and too lame to be funny for adults.
Such a shame, especially considering how brilliant the first one was.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Great SFX but terrible, terrible story
There are so many plot holes it gave me a migraine. I don't mind story writers ignoring complex science but this film is just a series of gaffs strung together by special effects. Nothing makes sense, none of it. What's worse is that this film has got a 6.7 average. Depressing.
Bliss (2021)
How has this got such bad reviews???
Seriously this is a really good film. It's a great idea, well acted, well directed and well produced. Give it a go!!!!
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Please ignore the crappy reviews. This is a good film.
Anyone who gives this film less than a 6 is just expecting too much from from storytelling let alone a film.
It's well acted, well shot, well directed and has a nice storyline. It's subtle, simple, emotive and all round an enjoyable watch.
It's not high in action but it doesn't claim to be or need to be. Just enjoy it for what it is.
The War of the Worlds (2019)
Disappointing.
Some good moments but generally spoiled by hackneyed ideas of extreme male stupidity, illogical and unbelievable reactions and an inconsistent storyline. Throw in polystyrene bricks and bendy wooden beams and you've got 1980's Doctor Who but with better special effects. A real shame. Felt like the job was just too big for the production team.
The Queen's Corgi (2019)
Utterly inappropriate for children
Just terrible. The first 15 minutes is all about a female dog trying to mate with an unwilling male dog. Riddled with innuendo, cringeworthy adult humour and mild swearing.
I'm not sure how this film ever got released.
IO (2019)
What is wing with everyone?
I have no understanding of why so many people hate this film. It's a really good film. Very simple, atmospheric, well directed, good acting. Only stars 2 main people and is quite philosophical. It's the opposite of an action movie but I really enjoyed it. Give it a go.
A Quiet Place (2018)
What an utterly ridiculous film
I mean its well produced and well acted but there are so may plot holes it makes for very frustrating watching.
I dont even know where to start. Every single scene has a conceptual flaw or something that doeesnt make sense.
Please save yoursellf the time and effort and go and watch the traffic instead.
Hard Sun (2018)
Such A Shame - Style Over Substance
Great idea and great production but the script and the directing really let's the show down. The female lead is great and acts her role well but the male lead is ropey at best. He has a terrible mockney accent abs his character is a tad ludicrous but that's mainly down to the bad script. The director has seemingly tried to make up for the lack of gravitas portrayed by the characters by having overly violent but badly choreographed fight scenes. I love a good fight scene but these are unbelievable and sloppy, in fact the entire show is undermined by unbelievable characters, bad accents and situations that just wouldn't happen.
