John Wick (2014)
How much action is too much action?
John Wick is a revenge drama which offers little along the lines of a story and and an excess of action. The story which starts off as interesting loses your attention almost as instantly. A retired hitman (or so they call him) single-handedly outmanoeuvres a flock of gangsters, including their boss.
Performances: Keanu Reeves as the titular character carries the burden of almost everything that happens in the rather short run of 101 minutes of the movie. Alfie Allen (hey there, Reek!), Adrianne Palicki and Ian McShane are decent in portraying their characters. Michael Nyqvist shines as the baddie boss.
Overall verdict: John Wick is another one of those stereotypical action movies, the only difference being that there is way too much action and gravity-defying stunts stuffed into it. While a section of the audience might enjoy this action-packed flick, I'd rather like to watch a movie that is equal on both fronts-the story and the action.
Twilight (2008)
Watch it if you run out of anything else to watch
Twilight is a phenomenon, whether you believe it or not. The saga enjoys a loyal fandom and I have known people who are ardent lovers of the books and the movies. My review, however, is rational and based solely on the movie; I haven't read the books.
Twilight is a simple, straightforward story of a girl who falls in love with a vampire and the consequences that follow such an affair. There isn't much in the movie that you haven't seen/heard/read before. The story does not even justify whatever few myths surrounding the vampires are portrayed in it.
Performances: Edward and Bella, the lead pair of the movie are, sadly, the weakest performers. The rest of the cast is not up to the mark but they are surely better than the lead pair. The cheesy dialogues between the lead pair might annoy you after a few minutes into the movie. The vampire family's behavior towards their son's human girlfriend is quite shallow considering they are the most feared family in town.
Atmosphere: The makers have surely not taken much pain over creating an enigmatic, dark and terrifying atmosphere. The scenic beauty, however little, shown in the movie is unsatisfying. The only pleasing entity in the movie is Edward Cullen's bedroom, which might make you want to have such a room for yourself.
Overall verdict: Twilight is a movie that doesn't need much attention while watching so one could put on the movie and very well do some other work while it runs in the background. Surely not a movie that you might want to watch over and over again.
Mirchi Malini (2018)
An intriguing plot runs into a predictable climax
Mirchi Malini intrigued me the moment I was aware that Sujoy Ghosh is helming it. Paoli Dam is a befitting choice for the titular role and does justice to her role as the enigmatic, prescient woman.
Supporting cast, including Akshay Oberoi, has done a neat job in putting up a story which instantly captures your attention with its bizarre concept. The story is put forward very simply and does not work in layers. The climax, however, is something that could be predicted, if you pay attention to details. Hints dropped by the director are easier to spot in this one.
Overall, it is a good attempt at making quality content at best. Go for it and share it with your friends if you liked watching it. We need to promote such good stuff.
Piku (2015)
A movie that you would want to see with your heart, not with your brain
Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan - three of the finest actors of our times come together for a movie that is so heart-warming and refreshing with an unusual simplicity. This is not one of the ubiquitous action thrillers, brainy or corny movies that creates wonders at the box office. 'Piku' is a simple yet hilarious and take on the bowel problems that come with old-age.
Focusing on the unusual topic of constipation, the story is a fulfilling one with its heart in the right place. Shoojit Sircar helms the movie with astonishing brilliance, a story which otherwise is nearly impossible to even think of bringing on screen.
The music of the movie is surreal and transports you to the purity of the streets of Kolkata. A noteworthy fact about the movie is that it is not stuffed with unnecessary dance sequences and melodrama. It is the story of a parent and his child, narrated in the simplest of ways, which is why it is very relatable.
