Ten Pound Poms (2023)
I was there!
"The Ten Pound Pom" TV series is an absolute gem that skillfully brings history to life. The storytelling is a masterclass, weaving personal narratives seamlessly into the broader historical context. Each episode unfolds with a perfect balance of emotion, humour, and genuine human connection.
The series excels in capturing the essence of the migration experience, vividly portraying the challenges, triumphs, and cultural clashes faced by the Ten Pound Poms. The characters are not just actors; they become conduits for the collective journey of an entire generation.
The attention to detail is commendable, from the authentic period sets to the costumes that transport viewers to post-war Britain and Australia. The cinematography beautifully captures the landscapes and urban environments, enhancing the immersive experience.
The casting is spot-on, with actors embodying their roles with such authenticity that you feel an immediate connection to their stories. The character development is nuanced, allowing viewers to empathise with the struggles and aspirations of each Ten Pound Pom.
What sets this series apart is its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia while shedding light on the social, economic, and personal aspects of migration. It manages to be both a poignant reflection on the past and a relevant commentary on contemporary issues.
"The Ten Pound Pom" is not merely a TV series; it's a historical tapestry intricately woven with threads of resilience, sacrifice, and the pursuit of a better life. As the final scene comes to a close, one can't help but reflect on the lasting impact of migration and appreciate the rich tapestry of stories that make up our diverse cultural landscape. In an era saturated with content, this series stands out as a unique, compelling and thought-provoking narrative that transcends time.
Gran Turismo (2023)
Gran Turismo: A Predictable Ride Through Unrealistic Scenarios and Forced Narratives
Remarkably predictable yet somehow still watchable. Unfortunately, it falls into the realm of complete unreality, characterised by a noticeable effort to impress that results in an odd casting choice. The production feels rushed, lacking the depth needed to engage viewers genuinely.
While attempting to establish a connection with the characters, the film falls short in authenticity, at times bordering on the absurd. The narrative introduces a protagonist seemingly catapulted from a lifetime of bedroom isolation to sudden stardom and a near-death experience. Strangely, the parents, initially deeply invested in their child's life and future, inexplicably shift to mere onlookers via television, neglecting any personal visits until unrealistically late. A similar forced storyline unfolds with the girlfriend, contributing to the overall lack of sincerity.
In performances by Bloom and Hounsou, one can't help but notice a decline in their usual high standards, and Halliwell might find more success in retirement.
The film evokes a sense of those storyline videos often skipped in video games-perhaps a deliberate choice. However, despite its potential, it remains firmly in the category of a children's movie that could have been significantly improved with more thoughtful execution.
The Watcher (2022)
Theft
This series stole my time and my sanity. I can't believe someone actually watched this through and ticked it off for release to the public.. It is genuinely the biggest pile of crap ever written and doesn't even have an ending... Seven unnecessary long-winded and painfully stupid episodes that amount to an unfathomable anticlimax. If it wasn't for the decent acting I'd have switched it off 20mins in. At every scene I found myself yelling at the screen pointing out the most obvious next steps, oversights or pathetic failures.
Please, save yourself from this misery and skip this one. I actually feel dumber for having watched it.
Keep Breathing (2022)
Wow.. Please don't waste your time
Just slow, boring, stupid and unrealistic. To cap it off the ending is incredibly anticlimactic. Nothing really wrong with the acting, it just doesn't work. The flashbacks are trying so hard to build some rapport and connection with the characters. They want us to understand her upbringing and how she got to this point. Maybe in a way this was good for her and now she can let go of her old self... Yawn.
Would've been miles better had they just presented a simple survival journey from your average city person.
