South Park: The Death Camp of Tolerance (2002)
Scarily prophetic
Watched this last night. It's been a few years, but yikes. How scarily it gets right the problems of total subservience to tolerance and ideologies. I couldn't believe this was written back in 2002. Even I'm an SP fan going back to the first series. This episode could easily mirror what we see in society today. The episode itself is brilliant and I was laughing so loud throughout I'm sure the neighbours wondered what was going in. Particularly the lemmiwinks storyline and Garrisons reintroduction to the children. This is him at his vilest, vulgar, best. Mirror what other reviewers say. This is the best episode in s6.
The Little Mermaid (2023)
Another live action bore fest
When the best thing in your movie is Melissa Mccarthy then you've got problems, big problems. But we already knew that with previous live action flops. Which Disney seems to be obsessed with making recently. Please, just make it stop. I remember when this company was the gold standard for movie making. It's a former shadow of itself. The lead was wooden. She's a great singer, but her acting is on par with the wood used to build Prince Eric's ship. Like the rest of their dull, lifeless remakes it offers nothing new. Just more of the usual pandering. If I was an investor with Disney I'd want to know why they keep making this trash. Who is it aimed at, honestly? It's truly baffling.
Beavis and Butt-Head: Virtual Stupidity/Locked Out (2022)
Brilliant, hard to believe they could top the original series.
First things first, I'm unashamedly a fan of the TV series. None too plussed about the movies or the later series. In fact, I thought the original show had run its course when it ended. I heard there was a new movie release and it was okay. Happened by this and have laughed non stop. I'll echo the other user in saying this is actually better than the original series. Its tailor made for today's Internet sub cultures and influencers. As a consequence it doesn't feel stale or well trodden. I actually think it adds something to the show personally. I'm surprised the toilet humour has aged well. It just goes to show you're as old as you feel. I hope Mike Judge has plans to make more because I've been pleasantly surprised by how funny this is.
Beavis and Butt-Head (2022)
Loving this....
I always thought the original series was a bit hit and miss, which focussed more on them abusing music videos and their content. The episodes themselves were almost an afterthought. It's been a while since I see it last mind and don't remember it being consistently funny. Unlike this, which I'm really enjoying and love the modern twist of poking fun at youtubers and influencers. Their cynical observations mixed with toilet humour and sheer stupidity is almost made for poking fun at today's vacuous Internet influencers and youtubers. I really hope they have plans for more episodes. Most have been hits so far. I've been sniggering along to their hapless escapades. You'll never meet a dimmer duo. Great to see their poor teacher and neighbour have also made a return. Particularly his hapless neighbour who often takes the brunt of their moronic behaviour.
Resident Evil (2022)
Comically bad...
This is probably the first TV show where I've rooted for the bad guys to kill the lead. Young and old she's really, really annoying. I'm not a fan boy either so have no skin in this, I have no idea who the characters are. I enjoyed it even if most of it didn't make sense. I love sci-fi, but that isn't enough to carry this abominable. Please kill off the main, she ruins it.
Drop Dead Fred (1991)
Surprised at the low ratings
Being a big Rik Mayall fan from his early young ones/bottom days I was always going to love this. Still, it's not a bad movie and while some of the humour isn't as funny as when this was originally released it's still a funny movie with some hilarious quotes, "cobwebs" still makes me laugh today. It's aged incredibly well. I spent most of the movie grinning from ear to ear. It works just as well as a teens movie as it does an adult one. Though you'll get more of the adult humour now you've grown up, obviously. It's a shame he's no longer with us. He was a brilliant man. Ditto Carrie Fisher. Both very talented and taken too soon.
Another Life (2019)
I thought this was a comedy.
Spent the whole of the first episode laughing. It's like they picked the most unsuitable candidates possible, then put together for a bit of a laugh. But here's the catch, they're tasked with saving planet. Bruce Willis blowing up a meteor to save the planet is more realistic. At least he looked like he knew what his job was.
Jimmy Carr: His Dark Material (2021)
Brilliant
Him and Frankie Boyle have balls of steel telling the jokes they do in the precious, thin skinned world we currently live. Loved it. If dark humour isn't your bag stick to ceebeebies or the vicar of dibley.
Four Lions (2010)
Brilliant
I watched this a few years back and didn't really enjoy. I can't think why because I've watched it again this evening and it's hilarious. Definitely worth a watch.
Pig (2021)
Totally unexpected...
It's difficult explaining why without giving too much away. But it went against my expectations at almost every opportunity. I struggled to hold it together in parts. It's a movie about loss and being disillusioned with society at large. The hoops we jump through pointlessly when it's the simpler things like family, etc that make us happy. I'm not a massive fan of Cage, I'll be honest. He makes some very strange movies at times, he clearly likes to experiment with scripts. But he's fantastic in the this, along with his long suffering side kick Alan Wolff. Great movie, highly recommended if you like to think about what you're watching. It's just a nice movie.
Ferry (2021)
Definitely one for fans of the Undercover series.
Ferry is larger than life. A real character and difficult not to like despite his ways. I don't think his character really had the time to develop in this movie hence it's probably more suited to fans of the TV series. Loved it.
Haute tension (2003)
Fantastic movie ruined by a ridiculous plot twist.
As the headline suggests, I was really enjoying this. If they'd have only left it out, it would have worked so well. The scenes, as the title suggests, are really high tension moments. The build up till that point is pretty full on and then it happens. From then on I'm constantly trying to work out if that's true how did this happen etc, etc. It's not a bad movie. It just doesn't really add up and they've potentially, in my opinion, ruined what could have been a true classic trying to out sixth sense the sixth sense. A shame really. Was left disappointed.
