Nefarious (2023)
Self-Proclaimed "Christo-fascist propaganda"! Avoid.
Writer Steve Deace actually admitted that this film is "Christo-fascist propaganda" and that it was "subversively" marketed in order to attract moviegoers who "are attracted to darkness." This is an ultra-lame attempt by Christian nationalists to indoctrinate you into believing right-wing ideology. The movie itself is not even very good. The death-row inmate (played by Sean Patrick Flanery) claims to be possessed by a demon that is apparently doing God's work as he mocks progressive social stances such as abortion rights and LGBTQ equality. It is also not believable in the amount of leeway this apparent dangerous inmate is allowed by the prison warden in what he is allowed to do during the interview, to the point of using his chain to almost strangle the psychiatrist (played by Jordan Belfi) while the prison guards stand by and watch, completely helplessly dumbfounded. And yes, the abhorrent and biggoted right-wing conspiracy theorist, Glenn Beck, gets to play himself. Fun! Not. Avoid!
Frances Ferguson (2019)
Not one likable character in this film
Honestly, the only thing I really enjoyed about this movie was Nick Offerman's narration, which I'm not sure was even necessary to begin with. The lead character (Frances) is an awful person, totally unlikeable in any way, shape, or form. The only thing she has going for her are her nice looks, yeah, great. She and every other character in this story are the epitome of dullsville. Maybe that was the point? If so, then it succeeded, but aside from that, I see no reason to recommend this movie to anyone unless you really enjoy watching incredibly lame stories about totally uninteresting characters.
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Don't Waste Your Time
How Martin was able to cause the two kids to lose control of their limbs and stop eating is never explained. I suppose we're just left to assume that he put a curse on them of some kind, but that word, nor any word like it, is ever used to tell us what (or HOW) Martin is able to do this, other than the fact that his father died at the hands of the doctor some time before. Did he just wish it upon them? It's stupid to not convey what supernatural power Martin has in order to do this... and it is, in my opinion, the greatest flaw of this movie. Another thing that bothered me was the way Steven is somehow able to get away with murdering his son. The family goes to the diner afterward as if nothing happens, and again, with no clue as to what he did with his son's body or how he covered up for his murder, we're left to assume that he was able to somehow get away with it. Ridiculous.
Aside from that, the characters in this movie are completely unlikeable. All of them. They show little or no emotion and speak and act very robotically. I was very unimpressed with the entire story and the way it was portrayed.
