Bad Boy Bubby (1993)
Pure Cinema. Pure Humanity.
Unique yet confronting. Ugly yet mesmerising. Profound yet despicable. Bad Boy Bubby runs the gamut of emotional subjects from A to Z and back again. It holds no punches, more steamrolls its way, right through a cast of characters drawn from real Australian life. It is ultimately a story of great hope in humanity risen from the depths of depravity and despairs, but not for the faint hearted nor close minded. With such classic lines such as: "God be a useless cunt!" it is a pure masterpiece of the cinematic artform.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Abysmal pap. Do NOT waste your time.
The Tomorrow War starts off well enough and engages until the half way mark. It then falls apart with numerous monumental holes in the story, severe cliches and shallow characterisations. It becomes unwatchable until it reaches farcical levels, becoming so bad it becomes a default comedy. Atrocious movie making that has CGI as its only redeeming feature to stop it being 1 star. Do NOT waste your time on this teribly cynical and mundane trash.
Last Cab to Darwin (2015)
Pure Aussie Cinema
Last Cab to Darwin has all the hallmarks of being being an Australian icon of cinema. However, as it deals with euthanasia and death, it is uncomfortable subject matter. It is in truth though, a celebration of life, adventure, Australia, people of this land and humans facing personal realities. It is a wonderful story, evenly paced, with real characters, all perfectly cast and all acting immaculately. The soundtrack is by an icon of underground Aussie music, songwriter and guitarist Ed Kuepper. The cinematography is wonderful but not overdone, constantly highlighting the beauty of outback Australia. The editing is precise and well paced. The script is excellent, full of humour and pure Australian lingo, people and scenarios. The country backgrounds are like a character in themselves. Every minor character adds a perfect balance to the main character Rex, played by Michael Caton at his finest. Especially well portrayed in a positive light are the many indigenous characters and situations, especially Polly played by Ningali Lawford . This film has very few weaknesses and I defy viewers to watch through it without tears of joy, sadness, dignity and a humane vision.
Mr. Mercedes (2017)
First Season gem. 2nd season phlegm.
The first season offers suspense, humour, great characters and stories, continual tension between the superb antagonist and protagonist and twists galore until the end. It is a truly outstanding series of 10 episodes.
The 2nd season is a total polar opposite. Despite being invested in the story and characters, it is woefully painful to watch for many reasons. Terrible premise, pointless storytelling, drawn out irrelevancies and subplots. A real torture to sit through, I had to give up by episode 5.
That's Not My Dog! (2018)
An "I love you, Dad!" party with jokes and music.
A heartwarming tribute from Shane Jacobsen to his dad. A stellar cast with great humour and awesome music. Distinctly Australian. I feel so sorry for joyless cynics who stoop to give it such scathing reviews.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
All effects - No substance
I could not finish the second episode. The acting is woeful. The plots are shallow. The writing is lazy, woeful and cheesy. The characters are mostly one dimensional, the Captain especially, who retains nothing of the authority, charisma or acting skills of any former captains. I cannot add any more than many other reviews that have been scathing, and rightfully so. The only redeeming features are in artwork, such as the opening sequence, costume design, sets and effects.
