Portrait de la jeune fille en feu (2019)
Moving, beautiful and honest.
Maybe she told him to turn around
The interpretation of Orpheus and Eurydice's story, how it was not a tale of hope or of anguish but a simple goodbye was so beautifully done.
Thats how I interpreted the movie. You have to say goodbye to someone you love sooner or later. You might want to do the impossible and bring them back from the depths of underworld (like Orpheus) or try and get them to rebel against dominant societal norms (resisting marriage). But when it is impossible, you shouldnt cause them pain by encouraging rebellion against a fate set in stone. Instead, take some time to feel the fleeting moments deeply and don't forget to day goodbye when the time comes.
The Shining (1980)
Amazing!
After my third viewing, its still as amusing and fascinating as the first time I watched it!
Modern Times (1936)
Heartwarming and profound
Combining issues such as industrialisation and its impact on workers, low wages, the injustice in law enforcement, with hilarious but slightly irksome comedy which will make you laugh, pity and envy the nameless character that Chaplin played and doing it with such ease is remarkable. The endless complexity and harsh unforgiveness of 'modern' cities and the simple grace and beauty of two individuals trying to survive day by day is a very endearing and hopeful look at our own lives in a way that we never lose the ability to laugh at ourselves and take light of our circumstances, live in the moment, enjoy companionship and love, even if everything else goes wrong.
Jojo Rabbit (2019)
Rabbits are brave!
"I'll let you in on a little secret. The rabbit is no coward. The humble little bunny faces a dangerous world everyday, hunting carrots for his family, for his country. My empire will be full of all animals, lions, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, octopuses, rhinos, octopuses, even the mighty rabbit."
Some might imagine the rabbit to be weak as it doesn't have claws, sharp teeth or wings and scurries around, running and hiding. But the fact that rabbits still exist and haven't gone extinct, they still go out everyday, in the face of the danger that awaits them and risk it all, they are the bravest of all.
This little boy is surrounded by Nazis and is himself brainwashed by the propaganda. But he doesn't fit in, killing and plundering isn't for him. With all the bravery he can muster, he tries to protect his mom and the Jewish girl, Elsa, she is hiding, fighting his own imaginary friend in the process and all his conditioned beliefs.
Knives Out (2019)
A twisted twist
The setting with many suspects and a detective in the middle of it, the great revelation in the end which is quite different from what seems to be the case, the beautiful set- nostalgic and perfect, reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel with a modern spin and witty dialogues. Add to that, amazing performances by Daniel Craig,Chris Evans, Ana , Jamie Curtis.. it was a whole package.
A Look Inside 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' (2004)
The beauty of beginnings
I came across this film on various platforms on multiple occasions but never quite got around to watching it. I was confused as the present and the past overlapped but it gained momentum soon when the entire memory erasing procedure of Joel's mind started. In the beginning, we see Clementine took Joel over to the frozen lake and he is reluctant because it might break. In this case, she was willing to dive headfirst while he was hesitant. This allegory was important as in the end, when they both listen to their respective tapes and know there is a possibility it wont end well, Joel is he one who convinces Clem to take this risk again.
Its not about ignoring consequences altogether but not restricting yourself because of negative possibilities. Because they coexist with positive possibilities. So maybe, we need to give both equal consideration.
