The Boys in the Boat (2023)
Predictable but well done
It was a nice watch with the fun of not knowing the ending, even if we kinda guessed. Id not heard this story before, so I wasnt positive they'd win. The look and feel was good, though it's always disappointing when they cast late 20s and early 30s men with early 20s women... To all play college students. Eventually, Hollywood has to cut that out. Anyway, the acting was great. Costumes were nice. The visual of the entire film was on point. All in all, I don't regret having watched the movie and my friends and I had a great time. It's a feel good film, for sure. Would definitely recommend for anyone looking for an easy night.
Sweet Magnolias (2020)
A feel good show.
8 stars instead of 10 because some of the acting is cheesey and poor - namely, Jamie Lynn Spears. Oof. It's painful to watch her act.
Otherwise, this is the type of show you turn on to decompress. It's predictable in a good way. Relatable for many. Brooke Elliot and Heather Headley are amazing with each other. I'm from South Louisiana - military so I love a lot and have been home in years - so the vibe is familiar (minus the religious trauma hahaha).
I will say, even for the good actors, many of the accents feel very forced and unnatural. It sounds odd. BUT again, it's such a nice shoe that you can ignore that.
The Tutor (2023)
I want my money back tbh
We watched because of Noah. He was amazing in Stranger Things so we knew he'd be awesome here. And he was. But Victoria Justice cannot act to save her life, so that was disappointing when she came on screen. The huge plot holes that everyone has explained.... That was glaring and had us yelling at the TV. Then once Victoria Justice decided she was going to not stand by her partner and father of her child's side, we just stopped caring because that's so wildly unrealistic. They have a whole life together and a baby on the way and some random kid starts being insane and she automatically decides Ethan is just like his dad because of it? And....who the hell would even stay with someone who automatically even has an inkling that you'd be like one of your terrible parents?
It's all bad. Noah is a great actor but the story is bad. The 5 stars are for him and the Ethan guy.
Moving On (2022)
The captions are wrong in spots. Cute movie tho
It went deep - deeper than we expected. Bit slow. However, I love those two women together. We love Grace & Frankie so we HAD to watch this. The bigger subject here is so important and I love that it was talked bout here. Especially how hard it still hits her and how deep it still goes.
The captions weren't right in a few spots. Most notably when they're in the hospital and the daughter asks Evelyn not to bring up her mother's letters with the father. Evelyn said, "Nothing Sapphic?" And the captions said "nothing zappy?" There's a huge huge difference which tells me the one writing the caption probably doesn't know that word even exists, what it means, or how it applies to the subject they're speaking of. Ha.
How I Met Your Father (2022)
Ppl are salty bc it's edgy to hate remakes
The show is cute and funny. The original was cute and funny. Idk what it is about generations getting older and bellyaching when remakes come up with any connection to their generation. It's old. It's boring. Get new stuff to whine about.
I loved Hillary Duff in Lizzie McGuire as a kid, so it's fun to see her as an adult. The characters are quirky. The plots are lighthearted but also deep. It's a feel good show even if people want to whine.
I think we can all agree, tho, that this better not be a Ted/Robin situation at the end - watched that whole friggin series for a huge let down at the end. Let's not do that here haha.
Im Westen nichts Neues (2022)
Shows you how senseless it all is...
This movie does an incredible job of jumping between the battlefield to those at the top, showing the pure disconnect and woeful pride of leaders. From the trenches to the overflowing dinner tables of the ones pulling the strings. I'm a vet. My spouse is active duty. Sometimes you can't help but sit and think of how those at the top often have never been in the position to actually have to DO what it is they're ordering. While watching this film, one minute your heart is racing, hearing and seeing the ghastly nature of war and hoping everyone survives before they're shot down, falling into a puddle of mud and blood. The next minute, you're listening to a crackling fire, watching someone finish their morning coffee while they pour over paperwork. The utterly infuriating insanity of it all. Brilliant.
Don't Worry Darling (2022)
Not what I expected
I'll be completely honest - I was bored. It felt very... Stepford Wives or something. But then my predictions were falling apart. Certain parts of the story made no sense with what I was assumed was happening. But then I realized who directed it and what that meant, as far as things I was assuming. I knew I was looking at the wrong side of what I was predicting was causing all the sinister vibes. As soon as everything is revealed, I literally yelled OH MY GOD. The background story and having a woman director... It all suddenly made sense. Bravo. I wish I hadn't watched it, yet, so I could watch it again.
Odd Thomas (2013)
Dig it
This was a great movie. I've never heard of the Odd Thomas books, but I'm intrigued, now. Really cool take on the seeing dead people angle - I usually get bored with these movies. The main character, rest in peace, is a great actor. We also love seeing the Green Goblin in any character form - yep, he'll always be the Green Goblin to us, haha.
The only thing I didn't care for is how the movie quickly flipped from him helping spirits to the fungus dude. But remember... I've never read the books. Usually, I like to read the book first since movies usually don't fill in all the blanks, so maybe that's my issue rather than the movie, itself. Either way, definitely recommend a watch.
Bullet Train (2022)
You really can't predict this one...
Every time you think you have the story figured out, something random happens. Awesome. Hilarious. Kinda reminded me of Crank with the way it was filmed. I really got a kick out of The Water Bottle's whole life being filmed. It's hard to find a movie where you can't predict the ending; normally you can have movies figured out a few minutes in. Also, the cameo I won't name so it doesn't ruin it -- cheeky. Loved it. Also, the overall aesthetic of the movie is great. We did not expect this to be this good. Honestly assumed it'd be some cheesy comedy with a few laughs. I literally said, after we watched the trailer, "I bet we just saw the whole thing, but let's give it a shot.". That's how movies usually are. But nah. Total surprise. Awesome work.
The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)
Reminds me of the likes of Halloweentown
It's a cute kids' Halloween movie. Reminds me of when I became obsessed with Halloweentown and our parents thought it was dumb... And evil, because Halloween, but that's besides the point. This movie will probably end up one of my kids' childhood favorites the same way Halloweentown and Beetlejuice are mine. 10 stars with all of that in mind. I've never understood why adults whine about kids movies when there's nothing wrong with them, you just aren't thier target audience, anymore, and you refuse to keep that in mind.
The cast is pretty wild, too. Didn't expect this many names. Then again, my grandparents were shocked Debbie Reynolds wasted her time with Halloweentown haha!
Hellraiser (2022)
Maybe it's because I'm a Millennial?
... but the original was cheesy, to me. We tried to watch it, first, but - like many older horror movies, it just didnt hit the mark, for us. Perhaps it is because we have zero nostalgic connection to the 87 film. Turned this on and, while the overall storyline is just plain odd, the acting was fantastic. Jamie was incredible as Pinhead. The SFX were gross, as expected and hoped for. The main character, I'd love to see in more films; absolutely killed it. But the storyline was predictable (remember... We started the original but couldn't get through it, so there was no cheating) and just didn't make much sense. Even reading background information, afterwards, I just don't get it. I'd like to see a film that explained the entire backstory? Maybe one of the 11 others could tell us, haha. I'd like to know what happens to ya boy, at the end, throughout time. So many questions. Gave it an 8 purely because of the acting, SFX, and how uncomfortable it made us feel.
Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
Waited 30 years for this!
Obsessed with getting a whole backstory of the sisters. I understand the first HP is locked into my mind strictly because of nostalgia. Our kids find it corny. They're not wrong. I was 4 when the first came out. They loved this one and we, the parents, love that it was filmed with a modern vibe nicely tied with the old one. This isn't meant to be a masterpiece. It's just another piece of the Hocus Pocus puzzle to bring a new generation to it. The storyline is great, the acting is just a bit cheezy, exactly like the first one. It's perfect... The new cast of kids are great. I AM a bit sad that we don't see Thora Birch, but it's fine. The first is for the adults, the second ties in our kids, and now weve got our Halloween season movie combo, just like we do with Santa Claus for Chrimmus time.
Stowaway (2021)
We liked it...
To start, if space is involved, I'm going to watch it... No, it's not what you'd call a blockbuster, and the situation is wildly unrealistic considering launch operations and the life support systems that would be on board for a mission like this (I am in the aerospace industry). But it was a good watch; I don't see how you can't attach to the characters at least a little bit. I will say, though, the overall storyline was very predictable. I love Toni and Anna, so we'd watch it even if it was horrible the whole way through, haha. I'm honestly not sure why all the hostility, besides the fact that I do agree that Netflix raising prices isn't going to bode well for them, in the long run.
Purple Hearts (2022)
Mil love stories are bad, but this one was pure cringe
Who did they consult for this? That discharge is unrealistic - I am an army vet and AF wife. Dudes get honorable discharges literally every month.. constantly... after entire sexual assault cases have multiple women come froward. The military locks their records and let's them back into society with full benefits. I watch it happen ALL. THE. TIME. This movie dishonorably boots a dude for a contract marriage? Haha. Maybe you'll lose a stripe and get made fun of by leadership for a while. MAYBE. Probably not. Nevermind the weird behavior by the Marines the entire movie. The barking? C'mon. Did y'all meet a Marine for this? Were they missing the old days and wildly over exaggerating? Wtf.
Next, did y'all talk to ANYONE with diabetes?? Why's she look like a heroin addict? What is happening in this movie? Why is there no chemistry at any point? Just... Why does this movie exist hahaha.
Military love story movies are ALWAYS bad, but this one was.... Just wow.
Q-Force (2021)
Didn't even know this existed
...until I saw articles about it being cancelled, which is wild, considering we watch Netflix at least 3 nights per week. So thanks, Netflix. Despite our watching everything LGBTQ available, we didn't even know this was a thing. Anyway, we've seen a few episodes so far, and it's cute. Definitely something I'd put on to hang out and watch. Tbh, the actors are great, so a live action series of this would also be cool. But since netflix loves to cancel things with good reviews....
Good Mourning (2022)
Storyline?
Idk its all over the place? I kept waiting for the storyline to start. I wanted to like it. MGK actually isn't a terrible actor as we expected. Megan Fox has always been questionable in that department. But MGK was a surprise, there. Disappointed. It just didn't make sense.
Tread (2019)
Welp
I grew up in a small, south Louisiana town. This is how small towns operate. The good ole boys do what they want and anyone who opposed is is met with whatever they feel will make you back down. Not saying how Marv handled it was the best, but I also know, having lived in such an area, there's nothing else TO do besides bend over. I must say, i love how those interviewing for the doc are acting innocent and as if this dude was just a lying psycho. The god and guns crowd aren't at all my cup of tea but.... Seems this small town created a monster by being monsters.
Brews Brothers (2020)
Didn't Think Id Like This
Because of the reviews, but.... It made me laugh. So. I dig it. Glad I didnt listen to the reviews.
The Conners (2018)
Didn't think itd work, but it does!
Thought we'd miss Roseanne, but we dont. We really love this version of the series!
