Laapataa Ladies (2023)
Bollywood at its best
The bollywood can be better occasionally and this movie is the evidence of it.
No profanity, no nudity, no violence. Which is another bonus point of it.
Despite small cast and budget, the movie delivered a big performance in every front. Be it acting, directing, story, and conclusion, everything was great.
The touch of realism further makes it all the more better.
Kiran Rao nailed this.
I also liked the aspect of women conditions on such occasions. And further how they can be tied to cultural boundings. And still they can do better.
Loved the scene when Phool learns that there are more to life than being a housewife.
But the MC of this movie is clearly Jaya. Her character was amazing and an inspiration to all other women that don't want to do as society tell them no.matter how small village from they belong.
Truly a great watch that must be watched by other.
3 Body Problem (2024)
The sci-fi done right
Been fan of sci-fi series for a long time and this series comes as a pleasant surprise. And since it is a book adaption, surely there have been critics about its adaption especially when they did some westernization with characters and other things but as a watchers who didn't have a clue about the books, the series is splendid.
Don't care if the book does certain things better, I didn't disappoint with the series. Surely it takes time but all things are justified with the answers given in an amazingly delivered ep.
The choice of using western characters to replace chinese characters make sense if you appeal to a wider audience. And the cast did a great job.
The direction is spot on. The visuals are gorgeous and scary tbh. And certain characters are well written and the actors performed them well like Wade, Shi, and Wenjie etc.
I am excited for its return and looking forward to an impossible solution of 3-body problem.
3 Body Problem: Judgment Day (2024)
One of the best eps of 2024
I don't know how different it is than book and if the book did a great job in explaining things or how the creators took liberty and changes things.
Still, this ep couldn't be any better. The answer of all questions with a declaration of war is the best conclusion of the book. The visuals are amazing and the storyboarding of this ep is just brilliantly done.
As I said, it is not the best but definitely one of the best ep of the year. The series didn't disappoints especially when compare to recent sci-fi shows.
I like the series so far now and this ep is just unexpectedly better what I haven't expecting.
Genius!
Fallout (2024)
A Really Good Sci-Fi Series
I am not reviewing it based on how good adaption it is of the game as I am sure non-gamers will be watching this series too.
Based on simply a series, it does a lot of things amazingly.
The atmosphere, the storyline, the cast, the music, the cinematography, the direction most of these things hit the ball out of the park.
As it is created by Johnathan Nolan, I can sense a lot quite similarity between this series and Westworld. The Man in Black is one example and Ramin as a music composer second.
Still, it has a lot of unique moments, twists and character growth.
It's dark, witty, violent, and sometimes funny. The actors did a really good job especially Ella and Walton.
I understand if it lacks certain things based on the game but someone who doesn't know about source material, I find it a really good sci-fi apocalyptic series.
Shingeki no Kyojin: The Final Chapters: Special 1 (2023)
Greatest Hour in History of TV ever
This is the best way to sum up what we have witnessed in this almost final 1 hour episode.
The episode starts with one of the chilling sequences ever which took the bar to the peak for both Eren and the episode. And then comes the cruelest scene in fiction.
Every frame of the episode of carefully crafted. Mappa delivered more than what we could have asked for. The background, character design, clean frames, mixture of 2d and cg sequence are well crafted.
Hayashi and people really put his soul in this masterpiece of the episode.
Kohta music is what took it to the another level. The new osts are really good but Footsteps of the Doom is what fits best for The Rumbling.
Not just one thing every aspect is perfect in this episode.
Isayama genius really elevated by Mappa and VAs or Music composer and what we got is the greatest hour in tv history of all time.
1899 (2022)
1899 - An amazing first season
Creators of Dark is enough to make you watch this series.
But with great expectations come great letdown. Fortunately, the series is met with the expectation that I had for the series.
The mystery, the setting, the cast, the eerie music, and the plot twists all are upto the mark.
I have to say even though the concept is not new but the execution is just brilliant.
Further, the high production value makes the series strong.
The international cast conversing with their native languages and how they need to make extra effort to other ti understand the situation seem realistic too.
Every ep is good and with the passing of each ep, you will get answers which further raise more questions.
Until you reach finale that answer most of the questions and curtain up from big the mystery only to get another one which is a setting for season 2.
I really like the series. Hopefully season 2 will be amazing as this one.
Rocketry: The Nambi Effect (2022)
More than a Movie, it's a historical Event
There are so many real events that we don't know and not they are thrilling but need to be in front of Indian audience so they get to know who are the people responsible for the country's growth in a particular field.
Nambi is one such person and his story is not just inspirational but full of unexpected events including achievements and perils.
Why people want to bring him done is beyond me. It's a shame for us that these people got such treatment after they did so much for the country.
R Madavan Rocketery tells this story in the best way possible and the cameo of Shah Rukh Khan was brilliantly done.
I am fascinated and surprised why does Bollywood not able to make such movies. It does not have a 100 cr budget. Don't need VFX flicks but pure gems like this one.
Karthikeya 2 (2022)
Premise is amazing but execution is average
The budget of the movie is small so it is obvious that they won't be able to the concept to greater height that it deserves. While the premise of the movie is wonderful the execution was not.
I love the religious angle and how it shows why our faith in gods are bigger than any scientific logic and reason.
But the adventure part of the movie wasn't fulfill the sheer richness that the mystery of our culture holds.
Also I am glad that I and others are watching it so production companies get to know what kind of movies we love so they will put a higher budget for such kind of movies.
With high budget, the director and other staffs will make a lot of things happen that is what are missing in this movie.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Overused comedy and Mediocre Villain ruined the movie
When you hear Gorr The God Butcher, you expected something villainess and terrifying.
But he's hardly been seen killing a god . And the rest of the time, he fought with the Team Thor in which he did bad.
Marvel lack of villain is really wearing them out and the fact they used actor like Christian Bale is also bad as their potential is wasted most of the time.
Like Ragnarok, as the movie has everything be it loss, action, a good villain, comedy, a little romance, and Loki (which is a huge advantage tbh).
Love and Thunder also has these things but overused comedy ruined the movie.
The loss is present but it doesn't feel the same as we felt with Odin demise.
Thor lost Mjolnir in the last movie and in pretty bad shape but he returned and that's how a movie should be.
Thor goofiness was good for a little change but that's not how his personality should be.
A like the visual effect but that only work for some extent.
I am guess we will be seeing another sequel and I hope it would repeat the same mistake as this one.
Bicchoo Ka Khel (2020)
Fast paced plot with lot of plotholes
The series formula is taken from Aapharan, another worthy fast paced series by Alt Balaji. The only difference is Aapharan has quiet few plotholes while this one has a lot of it.
The make the twist unexpected they used cheap twists and while doing so it made a lot of plotholes that are illogical.
The bright side is the acting and few good dialogues. Even in that regards, Aapharan is good.
It's still a good watch until the end when the ultimate twist is not so good.
Still, I think these types of series are enjoyable and good to watch. It's all about acting, story, and dialogues.
Hope, we would see more such shows with less plotholes from the OTT services.
Gullak (2019)
Brilliant, Relatable, and something that you can watch with your Family
In sea of Indian web series, only 1 or 2 percentage series are those that can be watched with family members.
Gullak not only provides that opportunity but it knocks out of the park with its sweet "kisse" which any indian middle household can relate too.
It's what makes us hopeful of Indian web series future and I am glad that we have something amazing to see that isn't complex, religious, adult, violent, etc.
The Batman (2022)
The movie shows why Batman is the best detective
Not the best, but one of the best Batman movies. Despite being a superhero, the movie shows his detective skills to a great extent and boy it is refreshing to watch.
I think the choice to Riddler adds so much here. The puzzles, riddles, and mazes lead to one answer after another.
It's more of a mystery thriller than a superhero and it's for the best. It's one of the reason why 3hr is the best runtime for the movie.
The cast is perfectly and I like the version of Pattinson young Batman. It would be a shame that we don't get to see more of him in this character.
Another thing I like is the production quality. Some shots and scenes are really well done. All fights scenes are amazing.
That's car chase sequence was so brilliantly shot. It reminded to be the chase scene of The Dark Knight.
The music was fit to the dark theme of the movie. The movie probably be the darkest in all Batman movie.
Riddler did a good job in being the villain but he lacks something which doesn't make him scary.
Overall, it's a good watch.
But for a DC fan, it's a must watch.
Godless (2017)
Western Done Right
Western Genre doesn't attract much audience and further it is hard to make them interesting especially when western has only two or three main aspects such as cowboys, horses, and guns.
Coen Brothers is few of people who seem to know how to play the genre right and now you can add Scott Frank in the list after Godless.
Godless has nothing new. And to be honest, the plot is not its strong suit either.
But still somehow Godless is able to make us watch the whole 1 hr long 7 episodes.
The beauty of Godless lies in the production quality and how the people worked on it give their best.
Amazing writing, visual shots, cinematography, music, character writing, direction, shot sequence, are all done very well.
And when you get all these things right, the plot somehow seem more than avg.
Further, the actors are all well-known and one of the strong suit of the series. Michelle's Alice is my fav character. Jack's Roy, Jeff's Frank, and Merritt's Maggie are also stand out.
In this hard genre, Godless somehow work brilliantly and should deserve recognition.
Vikings: Valhalla (2022)
An above average start for Vikings sequel
Compare to Vikings, it lacks a lot of things but it doesn't make the show a terrible watch.
The series has a lot of elements same as Vikings, one of those things are battles. Battles are quite similar to Vikings, it just the characters are new so, it doesn't have the same impact.
The series is a bit paced considering it is the first season with new characters. It should have atleast 10 eps. But fast pacing doesn't affect the show much.
However, it is not boring as people are claiming. The twists are not unexpected which we got to see in Vikings early seasons but after 3 or 4 seasons, it became apparent.
The first season gave us the idea of important characters which we would be seeing in next 2 or 3 seasons.
The start is above average which is good and the show has potential to be better in coming season.
Jai Bhim (2021)
It deserves all the Oscar recognition
But would it make it?
That's another story to witness but for now the movie has delivered flawlessly in every aspect.
An industry that is known for action packed movies making it a courtroom drama of this level without a single action sequences is a major success.
It also proves that South Movies are much more than action and emotional pack.
The courtroom battle though one sided but being a true story that can be sideline as the movie's focus is not witty courtroom arguments but the injustice suffered by tribal community from Govt and Police. And it wonderfully addressed this.
I didn't know that it based on true story and characters. So, the Oscar worth moments came as the movies ends and introduce real life Justice Chandru.
Hats off to Suriya!
Succession (2018)
Amazing written show keeps getting better with each episode
People who like dialogue centric series are for a treat.
I am here after watching S2E4. I got impressed in S1. I mean it is nothing like typical drama shows.
The writing is so beautiful and engaging that it makes to keep watching and watching.
The episodes are well directed and paced.
And then there is superb cast. Each one did a tremendous job especially Jeremy, Brain, and Sarah.
Jeremy character development or change was so awesomely done.
The sibilng rivalry is there but nothing like melodramatic where one wants to kill one for business.
And the cherry on the cake is its music. The music is so fit with the theme and its dope.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Many Amazing Moments but Not One Great Moment
The movie has so many amazing moments but it didn't have a great one. Well, I didn't expect it but it still felt like a letdown.
The real culprit? Marvel trailers.
The trailer already ruined the biggest surprise of the movie by showing us Dr Oct and Goblin. Further, they brought Jamie Foxx for the promotion.
Most of us knew what the biggest surprise is going to be and when that happened, it didn't feel like that big.
All then left the acting, action sequences and cinematography to carry the movie.
Even the plot wasn't strong to begin with.
The movie has a group of villains but no-one was good enough.
And not to mention many loopholes in the movie.
But overall, it was an entertaining one if ignore the loopholes and surprises that they carelessly throw at us.
Dune (2021)
It did excellent in all aspects but one
Not just sci-fi, Dune is arguably the best movie of 2021.
Although I haven't read the book, I like the world building shown in the part 1 which is why the pacing seems slow but it was necessary.
The characters are strong and everyone was upto the mark. Well, the cast is one of the reason of its success.
Cinematography and Music are undoubtedly the core of the movie.
Direction was amazing.
Although everything was great, Dune missed to give a great moment.
There are undoubtedly several amazing moments but I can't think of a great one.
Still, Dune and Denis did a good job bringing one of the toughest projects to the big screen.
Some movies are made to watch in theatres and Dune is clearly one of them.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Biggest Letdown Down of 2021
I was so eager for this movie. And probably that is why it seemed like a letdown to me.
The movie plays with The Matrix world but it lost all the charms it had 20 years ago.
Even Keanu as Neo didn't has the same dynamic anymore.
The movie did a bad job in every aspect whether it is direction, storyline, characters, cinematography, etc.
The action sequences was decent at best.
Matrix 2 was so amazing with action and now after 18 years this is the one thing in which they could do a really good job but it was so bad that it felt like watching a TV series rather than a movie in some scenes.
New Morpheus was not serious but kinda like cranky. New agent smith was somewhat watchable also Neil did a good job as an antagonist who was not powerful.
Plot was so loose that they didn't offer anything good to the story.
Overall, it was not upto a good movie standard let alone considering it a Matrix part.
Hope they don't repeat it ever again.
Only Murders in the Building (2021)
A Good Mess of Crime, Confusion, and Comedy
I was a little shocked to see Selena as a main cast. Didn't expect a huge performance from her and maybe that's why, I like what I got.
Steve and Short are just perfect for the role and they basically carried the whole show and to some extent Selena too.
So, trio is good and then comes the writing part.
Writing was the backbone of the show and how they used meta dialogues are just crazy.
The music is a bonus because if I like the opening theme, there is strong chance that I will like the show too.
The pacing of the show is really good. I didn't get a lowbar in the show.
The mystery are good but not so shocking.
But I like how the keep bringing twist after twist.
Overall, it's a good watch.
Kota Factory (2019)
The best TVF production ever
Although I like most of TVF originals but Kota Factory is my favourite ever.
S1 impressed me quite much but it's S2 that shattered my expectations and made me fall for this creative series.
The production quality of S2 was better S1 probably because of Netflix involvement however the sound editing, cinematography, and the direction is what make it a masterpiece.
The tone of S2 was darker than its previous season. And it sets even a high bar for S3.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021)
Great visual with Generic Storyline
The movie is more like an action movie than a superhero one.
The action are visual treat for audience but the storyline is not.
However, considering the character introduction, it is still a good movie to watch.
But certainly not the best MCU character introduction.
Some animation scenes are really beautiful and the eastern mythology is always an inspiration.
Tenet (2020)
Nolan wants us to use our Heads again and this time more than ever
Nolan movies what I say are intelligent. And it's the little details that play an important roles rather than a big action scene.
Tenet is certainly a complex movie that try to do something that never has done something before in a big screen. And that's a really bold move.
Upon first viewing, you can have answer to 30% answers to your questions and in second you will get more clarity as you pick a scene and get an answer more easily.
It's a movie that want us to use our heads more than ever and makes it a compelling watch.
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
Once in a lifetime experience
It's much more than an anime or even a TV series. It's once in a lifetime experience. From the first season, it amazed many of us and has been continuing to do so.
Everything about this series is amazing whether it is story, characters, music, direction, animation, twists, mysterys, etc.
The series has the highest number of 9+ rating episodes. And that fact is enough to surprise everyone.
Shingeki no Kyojin: The War Hammer Titan (2021)
More Amazing than Expected
Although we had high hope for the episode, it delivered more than what we expected. Everything was so perfect. It's a full on action episode and the animation was surreal.
The storyline is awesome as ever. The animation was spot-on. Mappa was amazing. Levi was animated better than we thought. More action to come.
