A Cure for Wellness (2016)
atmospheric psychological conspiracy horror
The story revolves around an ambitious, arrogant and corrupt young New York executive is sent to retrieve his company's CEO from a mysterious Swiss Alpine spa. It is a weirdly claustrophobic conspiracy horror movie. It could have been crispier; the lack of focus attenuates the awesome eerie atmosphere created. The movie is a little too long and story falls a bit short making one think how extraordinary it could have been. Choreography is noteworthy and has shades of Kubrick making it weirdly impressive and artistic. Color combination has been used expertly to support the visual eerie tone of the movie. Dane DeHaan perfectly fits the character and does quite a good job. Jason Isaacs if OK as Dr Heinrich Volmer and Mia Goth is suitably dreamy and unearthly as Hannah. The best part of the movie is its ability to create a good old weird psychological atmosphere; liked it. What is not to like is that the movie extends a bit too much due to lack of focus and pace. Viewers who like slasher movies should stay away from this one. The ones who like spooky atmosphere psychological horror should try it.
Little Manhattan (2005)
A 10 year old's first love
A sweet charming story about a 10 year old finding his first love in New York city. The movie is funny, adorable, tart romantic comedy showing what falling in love for the first time is. Characters are fine and actors have done a good job. The movie however rides on the crisp story, funny plot and simple but nice direction. Its an adorable and sweet (but yet not too sweet movie. Music does a good job to keep up with the changes in the mood of the characters; and good that it does not overdoes it. The movie is recommended for anyone who likes romantic comedies. It is definitely going to leave the sweetness of first love with you.
Blue Valentine (2010)
realistic contemporary intense devastating romantic drama
It is a raw realistic contemporary intense devastating romantic drama. It adeptly shows the mysteriousness of falling in love and getting separated. The movie dances between the past and present brilliantly portraying the two aspects. It shows how easily promises can be made against all odds and similarly how easily they can be broken despite trying so hard. Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams have done a good job in portraying two lovers as two different personalities in two different situations and time period. Director does a good job in putting together a good story in a realistic environment. The cinematography has been kept deliberately simple and realistic due to to the tone and style of the movie. Music is average and does not add a lot to the movie. The movie is a realistic romantic drama and viewers who have gotten used to enjoying typical feel good happy ending movies will not like it. The movie works at different levels and makes you think after you've finished watching it. It builds up an atmosphere of confusion, helplessness, frustration and finally devastation very effectively and thus leaves you pondering after the movie. The movie is recommended for viewers who like watching realistic drama and would like to watch how the two aspects of the falling and breaking in love commences, propagates and culminates.
