Singam (2010)
Irritating flick
Story goes like this. Villain Prakash Raj goes to a village/southern town where he runs into the hero and gets thrashed there. Then Surya the hero and villain come to the city and continue their fight. The fight sequences consists of doing humanly impossible feats like high jumping 25 feet, long jumping 50 feet, dodging bullets, beating up 10 guys in one go etc. etc. which only hardcore fans can appreciate. Then there are stupid punch dialogs exchanged between hero and the villain. Objective fans who can't digest unrealistic scenes will find such sequences unintentionally funny. There is the usual drab slapstick comedy interludes by Vivek, which has nothing to do with the main story whatsoever. Dancing and singing etc make up rest of the movie. If you like to watch realistic and believable movie stay away from this. Action movies don't have to be over the top and totally unbelievable like this one.
Moodupani (1980)
Decent movie. Climax could have been better. Great music. Contains spoilers.
This movie bears some similarities with Sigappu Rojakkal. Bad childhood memories. Hero hates women, particularly the ones who are easy going, in this case prostitutes. Falling for a woman who changes perspective about the women. Story goes like this. Prathap's dad is behind a woman and ignores his legally wedded wife even when she is badly ill. Prathap sees all of that and develops hatred for women, particularly prostitutes. Prathap is very attached to his mother and wants to seek a revenge on injustice done to her. So he starts preying on prostitutes. Shoba is engaged with her boyfriend. The guy's dad is a police officer and a family friend of Prathap. Once Prathap proposes to Shobha. But, she rejects it saying that she is engaged with someone. Prathap continues murdering prostitutes. Mohan appears in the movie in a guest role. That was still early days for Mohan's movie career. Shoba's friend is supposed to arrive at her place in Bangalore and is tricked by a female pimp and is forced into prostitution. One day, Shoba's friend is also killed by Prathap. Prathap in a desperate ploy to win Shobha's heart, kidnaps her to Ooty where he has bought a new home. There he makes her stay for a week and see if she likes him. Meanwhile, Shoba's would be father in law and friend of Prathap grows suspicious and zeros in on Prathap. Learning his whereabouts, he goes to Ooty. Shoba tries to escape from Prathap and in the climax goes to a place where Prathap's mother is supposedly bedridden. That part is somewhat similar to Hitchcok's Psycho. The movie for most part is realistic. Climax could have been better. It clearly lacked the punch. At times, Prathap's action is weird. But, then he is not exactly fit mentally in this movie. The background score of Ilayaraja is just awesome. There are 2/3 songs in the movie. One of them is an all time classic. Other two are pretty good as well.
Ullasa Paravaigal (1980)
Initially I gave 1. Now I have made it 5. All 5 for Ilayaraja
Minus Ilayaraja's music, this movie will score negative 1. Kamal plays absolute shocker role always talking about his double masters and PhD degree like an insane guy. Surli Rajan is annoying as ever. Deepa appears in the movie and does what she does best, i.e expose. Half way through Deepa dies when someone sets fire on her and Kamal develops a phobia for fire after that. God knows who came up with this logic. And how do the fix it? Take the hero to Europe and find some doctor who can fix this mystery disease. Some premise to shoot the movie in Europe and make money. Oh, they show Germany and France in this movie which was another reason this movie ran. Rathi is also in the movie. Sings some songs like Naan unthan thaai aga vendum and almost very next scene falls in love. Overall, a stupid movie, barring IlayaRaja. Don't even bother watching it. Get the music disc and be done.
