Hidden Strike (2023)
Skip This Garbage - Watch Any 90s Buddy Cop Film
This movie was incredibly painful to watch. It's like an homage to 90s buddy-cop/different-cultures action comedies, done by someone who only watched trailers.
The jokes, if you can call them that, are either lame or a dime store version of jokes done better in the 90s.
The plot & change in motivations is worse than the WORST the 90s had to offer.
The endless pandering to Hollywood's Chinese overlords was ridiculous. Can you TRY to make it part of the story???
The Jackie Chan stunts showed this man's age. Gone are the amazing body movements & acrobatic stunts. Instead, it's stilted motions and almost stop-motion.
The chemistry between the leads is forced & not believable.
I love a 90s action comedy, and I even enjoy the bad ones. This thing is almost unwatchable.
Fracture (2007)
Incredibly Well Done Legal Drama
This movie had me hooked from the opening scene. The crime that occurs, the events that preceded it, the characters involved were all so masterfully well done.
Anthony Hopkims & Ryan Gosling are incredibly well-cast, and the writing is wonderful. This movie is a roller coaster of thought and suspicion and suspense, just waiting to see how it all turns out.
There is a love story sub plot that isn't great, and seems to create unnecessary tension and extra stakes that are only there to attract viewers that don't like legal dramas anyway!!!
But overall, fantastic movie. And the last half hour is splendid.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Two Themes in Movie, Both Killed It!!
This movie is one of those rare gems that rises above ANY of its official "types" (comic book movie, cartoon movie, etc), and becomes an amazing film, incredibly well-written & well-acted. Just amazing. This is a MUST-SEE film!!
There are, in my opinion, two primary themes throughout the film. And they play into each other, and branch off from one another beautifully. And BOTH THEMES are incredibly well executed. I'm not even going to spoil what the themes ARE! You need to see this movie.
I will tell you that I had NO IDEA how much I'd be crying. I saw it with my son, and he asked at the end, "Why did you cry so much?'
If you see it, you'll understand.
Repo Men (2010)
Enjoyable, Unexpectedly Intelligent
What did I want from this movie?
- Good action
- Good acting (Forrest Whitaker FTW!!)
- Decent cat-and-mouse chase
I got a lot more than that! The movie was done well, taking the premise and not just making a dumb action movie (would have been good enough), but adding in a layer of complexity I just didn't expect.
It wasn't Star Trek level of sciency stuff, but good enough for this film. The driver to the main plot was obvious, but how we got there was fun. The movie spent a good amount of time really developing this world without being boring; so the character motivations mostly felt real and the world they inhabit made sense. Again, totally unexpected.
If you like action and you also like social commentary, this is a really good movie.
And the ending. If you've seen it, you know. Oh, the ending!!!
Fast Track (2006)
Another Solid Jason Bateman Performance
I don't think I've ever DIS-liked a movie with Jason Bateman in it. The man just has some sort of natural funny charisma and an amusing way to inflect and speak. So, yes, I'm a bit bias, but I just find his performances ALWAYS enjoyable.
And the rest of the cast filled their roles well. This isn't the next great comedy, but it's definitely enjoyable and funny. A couple of laugh out loud moments, but mostly just entertaining from beginning to end.
The movie was also relatively well-paced, never lingering too much or too long on any plot points. Just an all-around well-written and well-acted movie.
I definitely recommend it.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)
Fun & Enjoyable
This movie is exactly what you expect out of a movie like this:
- Fun characters
- Easy to follow plot
- Lots of Easter Eggs
- Nostalgia bait
I have a hard time NOT comparing this to the god awful 1990's live action, which I'd everything you DON'T want out of this movie. But even without that, this is a hood and fun movie.
If you're looking for some deep meaning with excellent character development and emotional high's and low's...um, wrong movie? And you should know that!
If you're looking for a fun, turn-off-your-brain entertainment, with a decent screenplay and fun visuals, YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE!!
Testament: The Parables Retold (2022)
Interesting, Good Watch Overall
I really enjoyed how the writers modernized the Parables of Jesus, and the background story to get there kept me engaged throughout the movie.
If you're looking for a decent Christian film that is working to give you a good story and bring the Parables to life, you could do much, much worse. This one's pretty good.
And how they made the reactions of people realistic for those stories was really good, too.
The acting was good. The characters were believable. The action made sense. The way the characters heard from the Lord was pretty cool.
I do recommend this movie as decent. It's not going to blow you away, but it does what it promises: retells the Parables in a modern setting.
Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile (2022)
Enjoyable, Family-Friendly, Good Story
My title says it all. It's just a good movie. It has good humor, great heart, and a really good story. Overall, just a nice traditional family movie that you can really enjoy.
The antagonist is perfectly played, and it's really fun to watch his character. The protagonist has some excellent character development throughout the film.
This movie is so much more than just some kids' movie. It's a movie with enough meat on its bones for the whole family to enjoy. From beginning to end, I was entertained and my son was captivated.
I wish this movie made more money, because it's definitely worth a watch!
Unplanned (2019)
Great Movie, Terrible Subject Matter
It's sad that in order to be honest and truthful, this movie had to be rated R.
But if you support abortion, this movie should be REQUIRED viewing! It's truly awful the lies of the abortion industry, and the pain caused to women.
The House (2017)
Ridiculously Entertaining
This movie is bonkers. It truly does nothing you expect, in almost every scene, and is just fantastic!
