The Vampire Diaries (2009)
What did vampires do to deserve this treatment on TV?
The first episode was promising. It had the plot to get us interested, nice (and handsome) characters. But as it turned out in episode 2, it lacked the premise to be able to build the story around the characters. At first I thought it would be a BH90210 with vampires. Nice. After 3 eps I'm not interested anymore what happens to Elena. Sorry.
I haven't read the books, but was surprised after reading their synopsis that the story there was MUCH more entertaining and interesting.
Therefore, I'd like to ask: what did vampires do to deserve this treatment on TV?
Doctor Who: Voyage of the Damned (2007)
The worst episode of the new series
I have been saddened by watching this episode. First of all, "Voyage" contains no new ideas: it is a rip-off of "the End of the World": aliens watching us from afar; and a female heroine that is willing to give her life for Doctor. But let us not forget there are bits and pieces from other previous episodes, "42" and "the Girl in the Fireplace".
Secondly, I hated Kylie's character. I genuinely like Kylie and I know she CAN act, but there is no actor (or actress) that is able to overcome difficulties brought about by the script. And yes, she did look "matronly" (the Herald).
Sorry folks, this is truly the worst episode of the new Doctor Who. Waste of time, waste of tape and, most of all, waste of such great potential of actors.
Moonlight (2007)
Evolving
Even though I am a huge fan of all vampire-related show, after the first episode I was convinced Moonlight wouldn't last. Wooden dialog was not the worst part. I simply could not image a vampire detective show that would consist of separate episodes linked only by the characters, not some sort of arc plot line (the same killed Veronica Mars in the 3rd season, IMO). After a few episodes, I was still watching it, I think only because there is no other vamp show right now on TV + Alex is a dish (not a very convincing set of incentives to watch it, eh?).
Anyway, hopefully, upon watching episode no.7, I've noticed something changed. Aparat from each episode's store, there was a specific arc plot line that made the show very interesting. I truly hope it stays this way, otherwise the show is doomed.
Therefore, I give Moonlight 7 out of 10, because it proved it has an "evolving potential".
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005)
Music really killed it - if had known, I would have paid not to watch it
Apart from many things I could mention (bad acting, no action, no development of the characters), it's the music that really killed it. It's simply too modern and midi-like. In the first scene everything goes smoothly, but right from the moment Lucy goes into the world of Narnia... everything fails. The characters, the story, even the world itself are unbelievable and completely artificial. And it's no even about the CGI (which is quite OK). It's about the believability of the story.
What struck me the most was the artificiality of behaviour of the kids - Lucy tapping the faun like she was what? 30? 40? Completely unbelievable for me, sorry.
So don't waste your money on this one - go check on BBC's series instead: maybe the FX is silly in comparison, but at least there's what I call MAGIC.
The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004)
Please, no more librarians!
This is the first time I regret watching a movie. Though the plot generally seems quite intriguing at first, after the introductory part of the movie we face a terrible on-screen disaster including such stars as Olympia Dukakis! In short, the film is totally predictable with awful script that makes use of all that we've already seen. It's not even about laughable FX, which would probably look the same if I did it myself. It's all about "wooden" acting, especially the main female character. It seems that the script limited all the actors so much that... there was nothing else to do just to "be there"... better see "Army of Darkness" - at least there they don't pretend to be something more than just a nice Sunday-morning flick...
