The Sandman (2022)
Easy close
I was disappointed by it. Me and my wife decided to watch this because we generally like Neil Gaiman's work and fiction in general.
We decided to stop it in the middle of the second episode because of the following reasons:
- Could not get used to the protagonist.
- Could not decide what its target audience was. At some points it seemed to be targeted at adults with love for fiction, where at others was totally childish and unbearable for us.
- Even though cinematography was good at some points, this work failed to impress us aesthetically.
Some of our favorite tv series Twin peaks, Fargo, Fringe, True detective, The office, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, Doctor Who etc. And I am really confused as to how some people with almost the same interests could get past episode 2.
Beau Is Afraid (2023)
Ari's finest yet
This is a truly unique piece of art. The kind that sticks with you and makes you think and analyze what you just saw. It has many references to other unique pieces of art and Freud, however it is not that difficult to decipher. I would say that this is a movie that can be understood by people of various backgrounds, if they manage to pull it through.
This is not a horror movie, if you expect to watch something similar to the excellent 'Hereditary' or the extraordinary 'Midsommar' you will be disappointed. Nevertheless, Aster's personal style and common ground with the previous movies is visible throughout the movie.
The quality that Ari Aster has delivered with this one is impeccable, there are scenes in which I was absolutely lost in the movie and stunned as I was realizing what I was watching.
I get the people that claim it to be boring. I did not however, simply because I am not looking for plot twists in a movie to be impressed.
Aster shows through this movie that he is an artist who never ceases to evolve and deliver different experiences.
His Dark Materials (2019)
Thank you BBC
Having read the books in my adolescence, which by the way are one my favorite book series, I will say this.
This series really lives up to the inspiring imagination of Phillip Pullman and it is definitely worthy of its title. The Golden Compass movie was not. I was really disappointed with the movie and that's why I was so happy when I watched the first few episodes of the first season.
The cast consists of quality actors such as James McAvoy, Lin Manuel Miranda and Ruth Wilson. Really happy to see them embody my imaginations of them and even though at first I was not excited about Lyra's or Will's casting, season 3 has changed my mind.
The production is top-quality, as is the direction of photography and the show's intro is legendary to say the least.
It is also less rugged about religion comparing to the books, having the author's bold statements passed on in a less offensive but effective manner, it really excels at that.
Is it perfect? No. There were times that my interest decreased and my mind slipped off to other thoughts, but those were only a few. The show is generally adequately captivating.
I would rate this as an 8, but given how happy I am with this adaptation, it's a straight 9 for me.
Eerie (2018)
Unwatchable
This movie was created to be frightening. It is full of sudden "frightening" scenes of small girls and stuff. It seems though that this was the only focus of the director or writer. It completely lacks a proper scenario and even the development of the story makes absolutely no sense. There are many scenes that seem to be either irrelevant, or forgotten to be cut in the montage, as they were part of an alternative story development. In addition, the "frightening" massively failed to scare me personally. To sum it up, I believe that any review that is above 3 for this movie is either a paid one, or made by people who don't know how a proper movie should be structured to be watchable.
