Mulan (2020)
A catastrophe
Having seen most of the modern live-action remakes to Disney classics and having read some of the reviews for this one, I went into this movie with my expectations set on minimum. I really wanted to be surprised and enjoy it, to say the least. I don't hate all the previous remakes, I thought Beauty and The Beast was pretty good, and Aladdin and The Lion King just fine (although none of them come even close to the originals). Next in line comes Mulan, the newest Disney live-action re-imagining of an animated classic. Right from the first scene, this movie seems...sloppy, clumsy, unfinished. The visuals and cinematography were pretty good most of the time and that's pretty much everything good about it. Everything else from the script to the characters, to the acting is terrible. I don't know much about the original Chinese tale of Mulan, but since this is a remake of the animated movie, the story is butchered. I get the themes they were trying to touch upon, like a girl living in a "man's world", the value of family, finding your place and accepting yourself for who you really are. None of these is really achieved. Right from the start we learn that Mulan has powers and even from young age she can fight better than experienced fighters, this alone ruins the whole movie for me. You don't need to know how to fight in order to be a fighter, it's something the writers should know. The whole second act of the original movie is Mulan training in the camp disguised as a man and learning how to fight to honor her family and her country, she didn't come there already knowing kung-fu, sword fighting and having super powers. She needs to make sacrifices in order to get better and in this journey she makes friends and enemies. But now, knowing that she is already stronger than the whole Chinese army, how are we supposed to feel anything for her during this whole movie? There are literally zero stakes, she can beat anything and anyone, well except her evil counterpart witch Xian, probably the worst written character in this whole movie. At the beginning she is presented as the main villain (not the evil Khan), but in the final battle they try to make her a tragic character, a woman who made the mistake of being born on the wrong side. The fights are terrible, especially that big battle scene with zero logic and sense, the characters are mostly one-dimensional, corny, terribly acted and there for the sake of it. I can talk about this for the rest of the day but i'd rather not. All i can say is this movie is a corny mess with no real stakes, terrible screenplay, terrible casting (except Donnie Yen) and some really awful decisions story wise. Being a sloppy, heartless ride, I can honestly say that in my opinion this is the worst live-action Disney remake up to this point.
Transformers: War for Cybertron (2020)
Lifeless and dull...for the most part.
Transformers: War for Cybertron reintroduces classic characters from the original 1984 cartoon and re-imagines the iconic Transformers war. Season 1 focuses on the war on Cybertron before the two groups of Autobots and Decepticons crash-land on Earth. I had high hopes for this show especially since it's airing on Netflix, but in my honest opinion, season 1 is a misfire. Right of the bat, the animation is OK, it's not something breathtaking or revolutionary for 2020. The story is fine, we see the two ideologies of Optimus and Megatron clashing (same old, same old) but we also get to see some heartwarming scenes where Autobots and Decepticons actually help each-other. I liked the fact that they showed us not every Decepticon is evil mainacal killer, and not every Autobot is exactly an angel. They briefly touch upon the mythos of the Transformers and their planet, like the Guardians and the Matrix, but it's just enough to make you interested and wanting more of it. Also, Megatron saying that he fights for peace, not for annihilating an entire race of Cybertronians was one of my favorite moments. And this is where the good things end. By the third episode Megatron changes this ideology and suddenly wants every Autobot killed. None of the characters really get to shine, most of them are just there so fans can spot them and feel nostalgic. The sound design and mixing was dreadful. There is no piece of music that sticks, the voice acting is forgetful and probably the worst thing about this show was them talking at the SLOWEST rate possible. What was up with that? It felt like one short line of dialogue was spoken at the course of a few minutes and it was probably the main factor why the episodes felt way longer than they actually were. The fights were just random shooting and AutoBots hitting all their targets (contrary to the Decepticons). All in all, not necessarily a bad season but not a very good one either. Very predictable and didn't really bring anything new to the table. I must say, the last episode was pretty well done and exciting and it almost made up for the whole season, but the previous 5 were way too boring and meh. There is room for improvement tho, we still have 2 seasons to go and i hope we'll get more character interactions, heart-felt moments and epic battles. For now 6/10 is my rating.
Family Guy: Send in Stewie, Please (2018)
It just might be their best episode so far, but I get the hate.
So it's been three months and Family Guy is finally back with a new episode and oh boy, where do we begin..
So the episode is just 20 minutes of Seth MacFarlane and Sir Ian McKellen having conversation. It's all about arguably the best Family Guy character Stewie, we get many nods to the shows early episodes when Stewie was an evil baby and his wish was to kill his mother and world domination. People are complaining how there's very little comedy in this episode, they are so wrong. The episode is packed with gags that only die hard fans will notice, and those who remember the good old days of the show. All in all, this is another great episode in the best season we've had since season 10. I hope it continues this way and the following episodes don't drop in quality.
Star Wars Rebels: A World Between Worlds (2018)
Hands down the best episode of Rebels
...Not only the best episode of the show but possibly one of the best 20 minutes of the franchise. While time travel may sound odd for star wars, in this episode we are introduced to the world between worlds where everything is happening at once and apparently people can be saved from dying as long as it doesn't affect other people's lives. Filoni just connected all the timelines in the star wars universe in one scene and hearing those familiar voices brought chills down my spine. This ones for the true fans only, thank you Dave.
Star Wars Rebels: Twin Suns (2017)
What a waste of time :(
God! I felt so stupid after watching this episode. The rematch of the century was to be shown. The final fight between Obi wan and Maul, it was teased for quite some time, many trailers were dropping, finally the episode was released and... NOTHING! The first half is a build-up to what would come, the hype was there from the beginning, we meet Obi wan, he has a little conversation with Ezra, then Maul comes, they talk a little and then the "fight" starts and before you know it, Maul's dead. That's it, THAT'S IT! 3 seconds, WE ONLY GET 3 SECONDS OF "FIGHTING"! I only give this episode 4 stars because of the ending, we kinda see little Luke and hear "Binary Sunset". All in all, the episode was hell of a disappointment, it almost felt like a filler.
