Beau Séjour (2016)
Loved it!
Loved this beautifully photographed Dutch murder mystery. I came to IMDb to figure out if this show was based off a novel. It had an intricate, complex plot that borrowed some of its novelty from The Killing as the first murder happens immediately (no spoiler there--it may have been the first scene) but the investigation happens over the entire first season (10 episodes). I love the long unwrapping of all the evidence and how the grief and anger of the family is a dramatic focus as well as the characters in the police investigation. The SciFi nature of the murder victim being alive (visible to only those who were present the night of her death) took a little getting used to. I thought it was hokey at first, but it grew on me. Once a fictional element like that is introduced, the weight of the reader's expectation is heavy and a load for the director, but this reader was pleasantly surprised by the consistency. Like the first reviewer, I binge-watched the last 4 episodes when I should have been grading papers. Somehow, I feel like the production or writing of this show is connected to The Killing, but I'll dig around a little more to see if that's true. By the way, I don't like horror. This isn't a horror show even though the title sounds spooky. Watch episode 1. You'll be pulled in right away. You won't be sorry. The ending surprises and concludes what was right under your nose. Great actors too! Loved Kato, Cyril, Charlie and Luc especially, but they're all great.
