Merlí (2015)
Is this Merlì supposed to be a model?
After watching the first episode this is what I can say about the main character: In just a couple of days after started teaching he's already the hero of his students without the least effort, he criticized and spoke low of all of his colleagues in the new school he was just appointed to, he proclaimed himself to be the best teacher ever, he revealed to a student what another professor secretly thinks about him leaving the poor boy upset, finally he stole to another colleague (who has done absolutely nothing to him) his girlfriend, just because he's horny and she's beautiful. How did he manage to do it? Just pretending that he loves pets after discovering that she does. And she looks less than 30, while this Merlì is surely around 60, and not exactly good looking. How is it possible to think about this gross and arrogant character as a role model?
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Subtle movie, not for everyone
This movie is long, slow, dark, and not average in any sense.
The theme of vengeance has been drawn from a Greek myth, and revisited with a Kubrickesque style.
It's the kind of movie you would see by yourself on a silent night, concentrating on the superb photography and atmosphere created by the distressing music.
Nonetheless, do not expect an horror which would make you jump from the chair.
It is sad to notice that The Killing... has become a target for haters who have not appreciated it. I personally find sad seeing so many "reviews" of just a couple of lines, full of swearing and undeserved, exaggerated low scores.
It is naturally not suitable for the average viewer, used to the action of the common super hero film.
There are all films that have a different style, made for other purposes than just entertaining.
Baramui paiteo (2004)
A distorted fantasy - Korean Propaganda
This movie is utter Korean Propaganda from the very beginning until the end.
I can understand it's a work of fiction but distorting the reality in this manner, filling it with anti-Japanese feelings and displaying Korean martial arts superiority over Japanese ones is just ridiculous and unpleasant.
Masutatsu Oyama never learned any Korean martial art in his life, he spent his entire existence living and working in Japan, creating a new Karate style in Japan from other Japanese martial arts. Portraying him like a lonely Korean wanderer traveling the country beating up Japanese masters is silly since the respect and devotion that he always manifested for Budo and ancient martial traditions. For a period of his life he studied under a Korean master but that was again on Japanese soil and the martial art was Goju-ryu Karate.
Another pathetic attempt from Korea to downplay their arch-rivals the Japanese. I believe that the fact that Oyama was born in Korea is indeed something to be proud of, but there are certainly other and more suitable ways to pay homage to his memory.
