Red Dog (2019)
Straight Up
I walk away from this feeling pretty good. These people didn't make any excuses for their lives. Straight forward, and unfiltered. They lived it, and dealt with ramifications.
Roadrunner: A Film About Anthony Bourdain (2021)
Mixed Feelings
I read Kitchen Confidential a few years after it came out, and really liked the book. I would frequently tune into No Reservations, and liked the early seasons. As I continued to watch, which included Parts Unknown, I got increasingly irritated with Bourdain. Increased pontification with a sense of righteousness frequently became the theme. It had a level of meanest coming through. Obviously he has demons, but the movie kinda fell short, and touched over his faults.
Reacher (2022)
Meh, But I'll give season 2 a try.
Overall all it was ok. The acting is generally good, and the storyline isn't bad. However, at times it felt contrived, and stiff. Many times the scenes didn't feel organic. Some themes I thought were overplayed. Hopefully season 2 will be and improvement.
The Last Kingdom (2015)
Good Effort.
It does a pretty good job with trying to stay within the context of the book series. First 3 seasons are strong, season 4 is solid, and season 5 gets a bit sloppy. I gave it a 9 rating, while ignoring season 5. Season 5 gets a little loose with the storyline. It's worth reading the book series if you enjoyed this show.
No Time to Die (2021)
It might be time to!
Entertaining enough, but it feels canned. How to you maintain the Bond brand without taking away the true essence of 007? You probably can't. I think it's time to let 007 Rest In Peace. That will not happen, and I'm afraid the concept of 007 will never be the same.
The Expanse: Strange Dogs (2021)
Waning!!!
If Marcos and his horny little son are causing chaos in the universe, it doesn't say much for the universe. It just isn't believable. I've said this before, the script does not match the significance of the events that are happening in this show. Appalling destruction and death, and we have to watch Filip get his jiggy on???? What starting out as a good sci-fi, has gone in to warp speed decline.
The Many Saints of Newark (2021)
Oh!!!
That was a huge disappointment. Not sure what they were trying to do, but that was shockingly mediocre. It would always be hard to pull this off, but this wasn't even close. Even as a standalone movie, it would disappoint.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Antiseptic Sci Fi
It's an ok sci fi, but overall as a movie it's pretty bland. It feels manufactured. Nothing really pops in this movie. You've seen similar sci fi movies, but this one doesn't really distinguish itself.
The Lost Pirate Kingdom (2021)
The Onion Made This!
It's the Spinal Tap of Pirate Documentaries. I gave it a 3 because it's kinda comical. The "historians" seem as if they are part of the prank on the viewers. You want to take it seriously, but the whole series is so awkward and B movie feeling. Historically, It could very well be somewhat accurate. However, there are too many moments that are distracting.
Druk (2020)
Hazy Context
This movie certainly has its moments, but it's kinda hazy with its premise. The mid-life crisis is played out pretty well. However, the remedy goes from subtle to nuclear in what seems to be a few days. I may be missing the point, but how do we go from using alcohol as and enhancement, too full blown alcoholism, in what seem like a small period of time. It may have well been a long period of time, but the movie didn't give it that feel.
Dirtbag: The Legend of Fred Beckey (2017)
It's Worth the Watch!
I saw saw Free Solo, and it was really good. This is kinda different. I'm not sure how to review this movie. Watch it, and take the ride. They play it straight, and I think it hits the mark.
The Legend of Swee' Pea (2015)
Deception of Basketball
This was difficult to watch. I was aware of Lloyd Daniels and his career, but this film gave some nuance to the story. You're conflicted when you watch. At times you're empathetic, and other times you just scratch your head. Overall, this film is pretty good, and worth watching.
Deadpool 2 (2018)
Not bad, but no more
The shtick is kinda worn out in this movie. Satire has its limits. At times the movie just drowns in over the top satire, gratuitousness, and irreverence. I know, that's the point, but its become white noise at this point.
Stars in the Sky: A Hunting Story (2018)
Back to Nature
Worth the view if you want an introspection of hunting. It may not satisfy everyone, but the effort to explore different perspectives is laudable.
Manchild: The Schea Cotton Story (2016)
Solid Basketball Documentary
I would certainly recommend this Doc for all basketball fans. I do vaguely remember Schea Cotton, and when this showed up on Amazon video, I figured I'd give it a watch. The story is presented well, and doesn't go overboard with the dramatic. It's a cautionary tale about the pitfalls of being a basketball legend. If you are a basketball fan, you will definitely like this documentary.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
Overly Absurd
I would not say I totally disliked this movie, but at times, I just felt It could've been a little better. It definitely has a Cohen brothers vibe. However, it just overdoses on the absurd. You get the concept fairly early in the movie, and have some nice chuckles, but they never stop, and it feels overplayed.
Finding Big Country (2018)
Wonderful!!
Awesome, fantastic, delightful. They say you should be cautious about wanting to meet your hero's. In this case, they're wrong. This is not your typical sports Doc. It's a simple story, with a nice message. It's possible that these types of sports Docs don't have the edge that people want to watch. However, we should make more of theses types of sports Docs. Nice story, good people, wonderful outcome.
Tiger (2021)
Pathetic Sports Documentary
Where do I begin. There is not one attempt to tell the viewer the explosion in the interest of golf during the Tiger era. Maybe his contemporaries didn't want to speak, but they would all tell you how appreciative they are, and what he did for the game of golf. I'm sure they did this because it didn't fit the narrative they were peddling.
Bryant Gumbel is a perfect example of this buffoonish documentary. He's not there to give incite. He just wants to improve his social credit score. Obviously, Tiger has human failures, and they should be addressed. However, his greatness as a golfer is glossed over for tawdry story telling, and myopic explanations of his behavior.
The reaction of the crowd when Tiger walked up the 18th fairway of the 2019 Masters, were not the people who humiliated him for his transgressions. They loved him for his genius as a golfer.
Hillbilly Elegy (2020)
Perfectly Good Movie
At some point writing a review of a movie is pointless. I was skimming over some of the user bad reviews to understand what were they possibly thinking. Imbd shows you similar ratings, and this one reviewer who rated this movie a 1, also rated One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest a 1. That is truly baffling. The user reviews generally like this movie, and oddly enough the "critics", do not. Not sure what to make of all of this, but this movie is pretty good.
The Expanse (2015)
It"s Contracting
Overall, this is a solid Sci Fi series. I have watched all of the seasons, and they have stayed pretty strong throughout. However, season 5 is kinda flat. Covid may have hampered the production for season 5. The script doesn't seem to match the magnitude of what's actually happening. Whatever context you may want to give a particular character, if they are a sociopath, that is objectively true. The magnitude of what happens in season 5 comes off as, these things happen. Hopefully, they bring greater clarity in the final episodes. This series is probably a 7, or 8, but season 5, is a 5 at this point.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Underwhelmed!
Ok, it may be difficult to be better than the first wonder women, but this isn't close. Sadly, the storyline gets muddled through the writer's own perspectives of the world. Just tell a story. It never got going, and just fizzled out.
The Night Before (2015)
Bad Christmas
Who knew irreverent and Christmas worked this well. Rogen has clearly expanded his acting repertoire. However, this movie is not very good, or particularly funny. Trust me.
The Breaker Upperers (2018)
Banal
I really like Taki's movies. This effort not so much. It has a couple good laughs, but laughs come from the actors delivers more so than the script. Works the gratuitous angle to get most of its laughs, and those scenes just fall flat. Was hoping it would be as funny as What We DO In the Shadows, but not even close.
The Boys (2019)
Potential
I guess it's cool to be contemptuous of the Marvel franchise, but this gave me whiplash. Yes, the people to a large degree will follow anything. However, this Superhero conglomerate somehow is impervious to public scrutiny. They used a heavy dose of dark and evil to create their characters, and I get it, but it was a bit much. Overall, the acting is good, and the storylines are certainly fascinating. I'm assuming season 2 will take a more intricate storyline with how season 1 ended.
Bosch (2014)
Good to Ok
I have seen every season of Bosch. The first three season are pretty strong. Four and five are losing steam, and are not as tight. Bosch, and J Edgar carry the the show for the most part. Most of the other characters are quite good as well. However, the script scenarios seem to be moving to the implausible, or way to coincidental. It's like they are trying to insert things that they have on their checklist that they think helps the storyline. It doesn't.
