M3GAN (2022)
More a comedy and commentary than a horror movie
I don't think that I would recommend going to the movie theater to see it but it can be a nice movie to delve for a while. It is more of a commentary on parents and internet attached toys (plus a few comedic scenes) than a movie that will make an impression with its scary moments. Just a good enough movie to have fun with and don't think about it too much. You will be disappointed if you go expecting Smile or the Barbarian. Unfortunately, the ending is filled with scary movie's cliches and a somewhat expected "happy family" scene.
Everyone interprets their role good enough and the special effects are on the same level, tolerable.
Lightyear (2022)
A good enough Pixar movie.
Maybe the people is having a Disney media saturation at this point but this is not the worst Pixar movie out there, it is a good movie and I have a good time watching it. My only complains are that they tried to fit the "I am your father" line from Toy Story 2 and they tried that sci-fi cliche of hiperspace/time travel. Trying to be a little more critical of the script, they definitely play it safe with the dialog, jokes and the overall mood of the movie, giving it a somewhat dull feeling but we are talking about Disney here.
Hustle (2022)
A nice and fun movie that we have seen already.
This is a nice basketball movie for everyone but specially for basketball fans. The cameos (and there are a lot) and the whole scouting process (the draft and scouting combine) highlight the appeal of reaching the top spot of any professional sport. Unfortunately, it lacks depth and some of the cameos subtract more to the movie than what they add to it. At least, the movie mentions the European basketball scene and how social media can work as a promotional platform.
El secreto de sus ojos (2009)
An excellent story with a nice touch of argentinian humor and charm.
The argentinian humor, the mistery, the romance, this movie has everything for an awesome movie night. My only complain is the slow take while finishing the third act and maybe a somewhat lucky resolution to a few plot points but none of them take anything from this excellent movie. The magnificent acting of Ricardo Darín and his chemistry with Guillermo Francella make it worthwhile.
Goon (2011)
A classic sport comedy.
Maybe it lacks an Oscar winning plot but the mix of a lovable character and lewd/crude humor (if that is your thing) make it worthwhile. I never ceased to laugh when the whole team interacted on screen. Additionally, if you are no a hockey fan, you will get to know a totally different side of the hockey game strategy and the passionate fandom behind it. A "modern" Slap Shot.
Ich bin dein Mensch (2021)
It deserves a watch although it's silly at times.
The main premise of the movie hurts the overall message and gives it a weekend afternoon feel to the story. Another premise or, at least, a more serious/strong delivery could have elevated the message even more. In any case, the mid-life introspection and aging/loneliness/soulmate background of the characters is what makes this movie watchable and worth the time.
Father Stu (2022)
A good movie that could have been a short.
Although the acting is good and the dialog usually works, there is not much happening on this script besides the central theme, even if it has a pretty good message. Moreover, that central theme could have been finished in about half an hour. This movie is more of a Sunday afternoon affair. Nothing to be thrilled for, but worth a watch if you have the time.
Paterson (2016)
A rough showcase for poetry.
Although it showcase beautiful poetry and scenes around Paterson, NJ, when you try to mentally coalesce all those scenes and situations in a single experience, the movie feels futile and pretentious. There are some interesting interactions but that's it.
CODA (2021)
A delightful movie that feels generic.
A feel-good story that hits every beat to be a family friendly movie night. Unfortunately, this is the same story that has been done a thousands times already. A struggling working class family that has a son/daughter that wants to go college to reach his/her dream but the family oppose the idea. The humor is spot on, but the acting can go from good to just fine depending on the actor. Marlee Matlin is excellent as usual.
Knives Out (2019)
A good "whodunnit" movie with a timeless feel and satisfying twists.
A classic style whodunnit story with an amazing cast, proper twists and enough campiness to make you watch a bunch of other movies from the same genre. Maybe the immigrant aspect of the story is the only one that removes somewhat the timeliness of the movie. Overall, a must watch.
Finch (2021)
A nice road trip story that feels that shouldn't be a whole movie.
This is a road trip movie about loneliness, emotional growth and looking back at your past. It delivers a good emotional message (although, it could be clearer) but it feels way longer than it should. This movie could have been better as a short story instead of a full lenght movie. Tom Hanks did an amazing job with the script. The visual design of the robots is flawless.
Mass (2021)
How far will you go in search for closure?
This movie is just a conversation between 2 couples that share a very painful experience and they are searching for closure. Because of this, it is not an easy movie to recommend. It doesn't have pretty photography, doesn't have any action scenes and the only twists are inside the dialog between the couples. Having said so, it is a tour-de-force of emotions and great acting. It definitely is the kind of story that gets you thinking "what I would do or feel inside the character's shoes". By the way, the less you know about the story, the better experience you will have.
Encanto (2021)
A movie where Latinoamérica is not just Mexico.
First of all, the portrait of Colombia (probably Antioquia) is vivid, beautiful and awesome. Its people, how they interact, they went all in. They even got the more peculiar flora and fauna of the region into the story context. At last, we can see an animated film in which Latinoamérica is more diverse than just south from Texas. The music and dancing is spot on. Unfortunately, the excellent message of the movie is diluted by the final scenes and a third act that doesn't give enough time to the characters to reach a convencing emotional growth. In any case, it is a well made movie that can be enjoyed by the whole family.
Okja (2017)
Beautiful filmed movie with a not-so-fantastic plot.
Although I agree with the overall message, the plot is pretty straightforward and makes it hard to keep the attention span of the viewer engaged throughout its running time. Performances are pretty good but the director made the decision to portrait some characters as too caricaturesque, harming the delivery of the message. The movie itself is beautifully filmed and the production values are awesome. The movie goes straight to the heart during the climax of the story. Probably the best this movie has to offer.
Gisaengchung (2019)
A social mobility and inequality tale.
Not much to say about this dark heist/comedy movie besides that is awesome and works in so many levels. The places, sets and photography, all works to transmit the same cohesive message that the plot tries to convey. It does all this without being preachy or heavy handed. The performances are top notch and with enough nuances to make them credible. If I try hard to look for errors, maybe there are some characters' actions during the climax that feel that they needed more build up to occur in the way that they did.
Don't Look Up (2021)
An "Idiocracy" for the social network age with a darker tone.
This movie takes the fears about our interactions with media and social networks with the polarization of the discourse on those platforms and tries to do a commentary/comedy out of it. You can see on screen how a scientific reality gets ignored or manipulated to fit particular narratives, and how that can lead to worse consequences. Those plot points can fit every nationwide/worldwide issue that requires a sacrifice from an influential/wealthy group. It definitely works but it feels preachy at times.
The plot is simple, performances are way better than the plot and the overall message is beautiful. My only complain is that the societal reaction to what was happening throughout the plot was way too passive at the end, to say the least. That definetely hampered my suspension of disbelief but well, this movie was not striving towards realism.
Vikings (2013)
A refreshing take on the Vikings sagas.
This series tries to give a historical context to Viking heroes and kings that we mostly know through oral traditions (partially preserved in writings). Without a complete or strong historical source material, most of the series is out of the author's mind. He successfully fills the gaps between known history and fiction while making a compelling story. The production values are extremely good. Villages, ships, and the overall social fabric are nicely displayed through the episodes.
Once the Ragnar Lothbrok arc finishes, the serie slowly loses focus and can be tiresome at times. And because the following arcs are more historically known, we can clearly see how the series forks from history in an attempt to make "good story" with mixed results. If you want to optimize viewing time, stop shortly after season 4.
Gantz: O (2016)
One of the best manga adaptations.
You have to be clear on what this is. This is an extract of a particular story arc of a long running manga featuring vivid violence and mayhem. This is not a complete story, You will not have a complete picture of what is going on and you will probably end up with more questions than answers. But if you take this movie as that, as part of a whole story and accepts its shortcomings, you will not regret it. It is a very engrossing and entertaining movie with non-stopping action scenes that will not let you down. Probably one of the best manga adaptations out there. The violence, the technology, the acting, everything fits nicely on what the manga wanted to show. Just accept what is going on the screen and prepare for a visual feast.
Foundation (2021)
Visually amazing interpretation of the books with some caveats.
Let me get my credentials clear from the start: I have read every Robots and Foundation book out there. I can properly say that Isaac Asimov was not a "world building" kind of author. He only fleshed out what was needed to move the story forward. What we see on this series (in terms of production) is amazing. What they did to complete this future civilization vision is awesome (the technology, the worlds, the space travel, etc.). Nothing short of amazing. Specially considering the lack of details in the source material.
The way they changed some characters so they can remain in casting while centuries go by is original and probably fits with the overall vision of the serie. Unfortunately, the fact that some of those characters are still present while time goes on, undermines the message about "a long winding plan coming to fruition by itself through centuries".
Another conflicting aspect is the inclusion of AI and technologies that works too much like magic. Part of the charm of this story is how everything is predicted and not how it is reanalyzed by a vistigial AI. Moreover, in this particular future, there should be a strong rejection to the development of any AI related tech as a result of previous wars/conflicts. In another subject, some plot points need the presence of nanotechnology that can create things almost from nothing. Obviously, we cannot predict future tech but this kind of technology opens the door to lazy writing and plot resolution that is not needed having a good source material available.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
"The Matrix Awakens Unreal Demo" feels more "Matrix" than this movie.
First, the good: Storywise, maybe this is not the worst "Matrix" movie. The bad: Almost everything else. This movie exhales movie production failure everywhere (caused by severe apathy, budget cuts or both). 80% of the movie has a long TV series pilot episode quality. It tries to be a soft reboot on the same vein as The Force Awakens, but where The Force Awakens hits in the right places (even when repeating the "they have a bigger Death Star" trope), Resurrections amazingly fails.
There are so many wrong artistic choices that they must be intentional. The line delivery by the supporting actors removes any "gravitas" that the originals had. They went with a more happy/jolly style when in the matrix. The fighting coreography is atrocious. The fighting scenes editing was changed to the fast-cut style that undermines what is happening on screen. The bullet time FX is better even on low budget games. The only visually good scenes are in the "real world". Even the sound design and music selection is "meh". They tried a more "saturated but balanced" color grading inside the matrix as a way to move the story forward, but that means that we didn't even get that characteristic matrix look.
Finally, although the story makes sense and was a good spot for a reboot, they somehow ended up with an underwhelming ending.
Play the demo, it is a better time investment than this.
The Whole Truth (2021)
There is a good story somewhere.
The movie has good production values and there is a good, a very good story somewhere but that's about it. The kid's acting is awful, there is a subplot that could be cut entirely from the movie and nothing would have been lost, and the script is rough at times. The scripts doesn't try to smooth the experience between plot points giving up the impression that this movie needed a few more years being rewritten. In any case, the plot twists are good but probably they are not enough to make the time investment worthwhile.
Best in Show (2000)
Probably more of a documentary than a movie.
I can easily see those contestants displayed on the screen being an exact replica of a sample extracted directly from dog shows' rosters. The quirkiness, the obsession, the believe that the shows are more important than interpersonal relationships, all is here.
Overall, it is a nice mockumentary that can provide a few laughs. I will probably not watch it again.
Justice League (2017)
How a director change can derail a production.
I expected more of this film, specially because I liked Batman vs Superman. Unfortunately, the director change during the production is felt during the whole movie. It tries to hard to be a Marvel movie instead of being a good story on its own. The humor is a hit or miss, the re-shooting of those Superman scenes (with the "uncanny valley" removal of the mustache) is a mess. It is watchable, but is just not a movie to pay for. You can almost feel how the production was steering the story towards a lighter theme instead of continuing the whole atmosphere or world built on the previous movies.
Watch the Zack Snyder's cut instead. It is a 200% better experience (and longer too).
Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (2016)
One of the best "isekai" animes of recent years.
Although is a sort of a power fantasy (and the "isekai" genre is already saturated with those), it achieves its originality by approaching the subject from the "this is more of a curse than a blessing kind of super power" side of the things. You can see and feel the anguish and pain of the main character while trying to figure out how to move forward on this world.
My only complains are about some of the classic anime tropes of this genre: 90% of the women on this world are attracted to the main character, the extremely long conversations about being sorry or the long winding monologues detailing every reason why they are feeling what they are feeling, etc.
The world building and the challenges that the main character must confront on this world are probably the strongest points of this anime. And, of course, Rem.
Just Married (2003)
A watchable movie.
A romantic comedy mixed with a vacation style road trip. It gets a few laughs out during the fist half of the movie, but the plot somewhat loses rhythm and loses focus on the third act. The ending is predictable. Again, a watchable movie if you approach it with the correct expectations or you are a Brittany Murphy's fan.
