Civil War (2024)
Not what I expected!
To be honest, I didn't know anything about this movie beforehand, nor did I see any trailers. May have been because I am German and only saw this on a visit in the US, but I thought this is about some fictional civil along the current political devides, conservative against progressive states. I am pretty involved in modern US politics and so I was thinking "Oh boy, some militia members scraped together some dark money and made some propaganda piece.
I was mildly surprised how then in the movie Texas and California joined forces, two states very different. In retrospect it prolly was a good decision to do it like that, to avoid any accusation of partisanship in today's climate.
The actors did a very good job of portraying different stiles of war photographs, I was a bit afraid that the young girl becomes a bit of a crutch and a damsel in distress who constantly needs to be saved. In the end though she just portraits it very well how that adrenalin high of getting the perfect shot can turn deadly fast and even makes you forget the horrors happening around you.
The constant freeze frame and color change really made it look like some of those famous war time photos we have all see, and pulls you in as if you are behind the camera.
The score was very fitting, turning from absolute silence to bombastic when battles are happening. Sometimes it even was part of the absurdety of war, when they come to that suburban area where everyone ist just going to do buisness as usual.
Usually if the US military is shown, the provide equipment for cheap and expect a certain message. Dunno if this was the case here, if they got the equipment and didn't really care about the story, cause I don't think this paints pretty picture, either the military is joining with the secessionists or they are defending a bad (?) president. In both cases they have little regard for civilian lives as seen in the mass grave scene or when the storm the white house, these are soldiers in uniform just gunning down everything that moves. I think this movie does a good job of just ripping the veil from people's eyes how America fights it's wars. Cause the big expectation would have been, the US military are the good guys, they wouldn't kill civilians, let alone fellow Americans. They would just arrest the president and put him in front of a court. But in this movie is more like the civil war in Libya, where Ghaddafi was mugged and his corpse dragged through the streets.
The only thing that irked me a bit was that the death of the Kirsten Dunst Character was just so Klischee, I was a bit let down. They even could have not done it like that instead of that, let the young gun take over the torch from the old seasoned photographer, that seemingly lost her marbles during the white house engage. The at a moments notice she is just her normal self and walks into the white house without hesitation. But just a small flaw for me in an overall very good movie.
Secret Obsession (2019)
Stars for the house and detective
As everyone else said this movie was a dragged out performance with no surprises to offer after it is pretty obvious how her "husband" is the bad guy from the moment he walks into the hospital
Here are some more things to ponder.
-why is the husband with a huge house and surrounding forest burry a body in plain sight of the balcony
-body shaped hill in the garden, how sneaky
-cops just casually waving every suspicious thing off (maybe realistic?)
-what happened to the house owners?
- women how just got traumatized and who lost her family and husband has a happy drive off into the sun set, was she going to live in the house?
-hobo guy just got introduced to be killed, waaaat?
- dead daughter trope didn't explain anything, cause neither was the amnesia women missing nor was she a kid or something
- whats the point of burying the other guy but driving around her dead husband for weeks?
- the whole stalker thing was just very unrealistic, as usually a stalker will only kill somebody after they have been harassing them for ages and it's rather go to jail/lose the object of desire forever or kill her, in this movie they made it seem like she didn't even know the guy existed, so how can he spiral just like that
- policemen going into it alone, against a possible hostage situation with a guy who he knew killed at least 2 people, big brain time.
IO (2019)
Not for the tik-tok generation
The movie was something else and I quite liked it, but it is easy to see why many people disliked it. It's slow paced, reduced acting and the story is just the vehicle.
So if you are somebody who ist tik-tok conditioned, meaning getting to the point fast, loud and wacky entertainment in 15 sec clips, or somebody who just watches movie as background noise while doing something on their phone, this movie is going to bore you.
It's because you have to soak the scenery and camera shots in, the little gestures by the actors, who I think did a great job. People disliked the wooden acting, disregarding the fact that the persons in the movie were living alone for a long time and especially the main character also gives off some autistic vibes.
The main critics I have is that reason why the earth became habitable again wasn't really flashed out, she saw it in a dream and so it must be true. Didn't really get why the bees were so important and what the surviving bee meant. The movie requires a lot of turning off your disbelieve and just accepting things as they are, I wouldn't have been mad if the ending wasnt positive and she just decided to stay there continuing her research possibly doomed to die as the last citizen on earth, that would have been some heavy weight on anybodies mind.
Overall I found it comparable to the fountain, in ways that the movie was more of meditative journey then a thrill ride, that's so common today, something I feel like has to be experienced in a movie theater. Many people just have forgotten how to watch movies like that in this day and age.
Carnival Row (2019)
Overall enjoyable, but.....
I loved the first season, it had a compelling plot and the characters where fleshed out to make this fairy tale world seem real. Obvious paralells to real life racism and segregation were not hamfisted in. And the season had a nice cliff hanger. Dunno if covid ruined the series potential, as Orlando Bloom said that the long pause made them reconsider things.
Season two started off well, but it seems like after a couple of episode the financing got cut and so the writers had to cram everything into a few remaining episodes. Out of nowhere we got this new faction which is very powerful but didnt get mentioned at all before? The characters sucked now, it was all just about scowling and stern looks, and just changing their mind all the times or just acting against their best interest, stopped rooting even for Orlando Blooms character cause he just didnt really do much except running around and looking mad/angry.
Also just feels like they did a very bad job of portraying the new dawn. Its prolly Hollywoods Vision of true comunism. Meaning, it all looks nice and shiny from the outside, but when they pull off the mask all of a sudden its Stalin and Mao on speed. We even got some dude in there saying that people should rather pull themselves up by their bootstraps instead of blaming everything on their opressors. Why would the main characters give a damn if the hole parliamant gets slaughtered, the same people that put them in a ghetto and killed a bunch of them.
And what was that ending, big love story from the first season was just a joke, cause i guess shes always been a lesbian. The row turned from a ghetto into a circus where everybody is happy. How? The same elite is still in charge, the New Dawn lost and those people are still poor. Even super racist policemen puts up a friendly face, cause he...changed.... his mind, i guess?
Guess the message is, dont fight it, things will change for better just like that.
Father Brown: The Blood of the Anarchists (2019)
Only worthy because it's farther brown
I usually love father brown but this episode rubbed me all the wrong way. Don't know about the anarchist at the time but this feels like a grotesque caricature of the anarchist ideas. As if anarchism is just about destruction and causing chaos for the sake of it. Let alone anarchist claiming at every occasion that this the anarchists way of doing stuff. Anarchist were amongst the most suppressed and procecuted individuals in recent history. Usually father brown seems to be more open minded even in context of his catholic faith but here he rather comes of patronizing and working from the same predjeduces as everyone else "don't you know that by destroying everything, you will also destroy good things!" give me a break.
Moral of the story: don't question authority or you end up dead
Only Bunty was a bright spot in her usual quirkiness and teasing Mrs. Mccarthy for her old fashioned views.
What Is a Woman? (2022)
One star added for making Matt Walsh go to Africa
This movie was bad, its funny how nowadays people will vote brigade anything just to own the libs. The ad money that Daily wire is pumping into social media is gangbusters, every commercial on even lefty channels is now this movie or Jordan Peterson.
The fact that Matt Walsh just plays this loveable dumbo, who is just asking basic questions is just as fake as this constructed narrative that universities nowadays are North Korea that will have people hung if they use the wrong pronouns. Matt Walsh likes to label himself a christian fachist, who would to that guy? His basic premise, the question, what a woman is, couldnt be answered by himself, without being as flip floppy as he portraits the left to be.
The fact that people heralding this as this great intellectual truthbomb is baffeling to me. Too bad Matt Walsh only got to Africa for his little "look how crazy western libs are" tour, if he would have made to India or Thailand, he would have been in for a treat.
I very sure than making this movie will cause way more harm than any supposed woke agenda ever could, no matter what the right is telling you. While sitting in the power center almost everywhere and screeching "look how they are to blame foir everything bad in the world, just porttraid by immediatly blaming random transgender people for mass shootings.
All i wanna ask Matt Walsh is: Why do you even care bruh.
Mother Krampus (2017)
Good for a laugh
Just stumbled into this mess by accident. This movie should have been a comedy and not a horror movie, I guess they tried to rip off "the nun" but fell flat on their faces. If you wanna make cheesy horror flick that's fine with me, many classics prolly had lower budgets than this one, but why make it so bad?
The whole premise of the movie could have been good, but got ruined by horrible acting, gore effects out of a mickey mouse magazine and suspense of a snail race. Like seriously are all these actors drugged up, they watch the menace approach with stoic faces or while somebody next to them gets attacked. The kids are especially stupid and hilarious in this one. Their attempts to fight are so half assed it was laugh inducing, bad witch approaching? Splash a bowl of water into her face! She is attacking your kid? Throw an empty cardboard box at her back! The worst thing was the supposed Christmas lights that would protect them from her, next thing you know she strangles on of the dudes with a Christmas light, like Wut???
If you got time to waste, it's good for that, but don't expect to be scared at all.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Pretty much "meh"!
The Movie seems to be pretty polarizing, which i see no reason for, some make it to be the masterpiece of the century other lable it as a trainwreck.
I think most fitting is something in the middle, cause overall the stunts, scenery and effects were pretty nice. The movie has its strong points obviously in the action department. I think Theron did a pretty good job at portraying a tough girl in apocalyptic times and steals the show of Hardy that was somewhat lacking a chance to shine. A fine actor was wasted on a role that could have been played just as well by any 90s action movie hero ( Van Damme, Stalone, Dudikoff, Arnold)
My main critique will be the failed world building, i get that this is an action movie but from what i know about the other mad max movies this just doesnt cut it. You get zero information or background about anything:
- what about the different tribes?
- what are these ghost vision Max sees, about?
- where do the breeding women come from?
- what is the back story of the different areas they pass through (salt flats, swamp)
- who killed the world? yeah who!?
the list is so long, they could have cut some action and throw in some scene where they are just driving and tell each other something or pass on some information for the girls and the audiance. Or some old dude just narrates it ,whatever. As mentioned by many other negative reviews the whole idea to turn around came a bit sudden, and their plan is to trap the main forces and take the city, evading a fight. Instead they just run straight into them. What kind of a dumb plan is that?
I really love the post apocalyptic scenario, but i have yet to find a film that can fill it with life, most of the time you just get a very small glimpse at the world and what happened. Damn i want Information how the rest of the world is doing, how the whole situation came to be, how people survived and managed to build up a new society. This might be the worst movie in that regard in that genre with such a big budget.
Grey's Anatomy (2005)
Train wreck of a show
Lets be clear, i am not a hardcore fan i only watched several episodes and neither know the deep entanglement of the characters nor do i even know their names. But the things i watched left me kinda dumbstruck why this show has such a high popularity and is considered to show modern women in a modern society.
The main critique doesn't even stem from the silly plots, but from the agenda and picture this series paints how modern life functions today. Especially from a womans view point. All the woman in this thing do is either argue, gossip or dish out snarky comments towards their co workers, patients or partners. I struggled to find a normal conversation that didn't evolve around those three. Sure this is meant to entertain but it would have done no harm injecting some realism into this stuff. Not every dialogue in real life is a back and forth with bitchy comments or some supposed sarcastic witty mic drops. All the woman are portrayed as this strong headed, going their own way, types who are in full control, men are only holding them back and are there for some fun between operations or to gossip about. Unless ofc fate strikes then these men are always there for a warm hug till it has blown over. The males in this series get pushed around and almost all the time mess up big time and just refuse to understand woman. The two Highlights for me in feminist propaganda and double standards were the one time that a dude almost died cause some woman beat him up (self defense my ass) and the patient got threatened that if he tried to bring her to court he will get beaten up worse by some male doctor in white knight armor. You cant be serious? Just imagine it the other way round oh boy. Second case when some red head Christian doctor lost her child and got divorced but still got pregnant from the same man. He wants to check if the baby has the same condition as the other child and thinks about aborting to spare them going through the grief again (sounds reasonable? WRONG) the female doctor proclaims with a death stare that its her body and her child so its her decission, he has no say at all. Weird I thought it takes two people to make a baby or have women suddenly developed a possibility to self fertilize? What is the message, men are mere seed donors and then they can gtfo? Also these woman superficial and hollow, no lovable bone in these hags. Cause looks in this world allow you to do anything.
The characters are not likable at all the Asian doctor seems to get off on talking everybody down, the main characters acts like she has deep insight into the human mind when narrating all this BS but in the end she is just bi polar who goes from whiny wimp to arrogant hag in no time. the black plumb doctor is just obnoxious and the lesbians are just as bad as every other forced couple in this series.
Which leads us to the next point the unrealistic and over the top plots. The weird thing is the patients get barely screen time and are mere vehicles for the doctors to have something to do while they talk about their love lives. What kind of hospital is this? First there are only surgeons present, no internist? No oncologists? Maybe this was explained somehow but seems just weird that every problem is solved by cutting the patient open. The patients barely get developed, they are just thrown into your face with their condition and you then watch the doctors gossip over something while they perform brain surgery. Very realistic. One episode was so ridiculous over the top, i nearly couldn't contain myself. During a big storm a whole bus of poor children crashes in front of the hospital, everybody is screaming, the main character also gets her baby and ofc the power goes out in the hospital, all at the same time. Ofc this bus is going to explode and some kids are trapped, but some hero doctor goes for saving while pulling off his shirt for the eye candy, this episode was such a big pile of garbage its borderline comedic. Other medical series at least manage to tell a more or less convincing story during the episode and give the short appearances some depth with simple measures. This show fails on all levels doing that, you don't care about the patient, you don't care about the doctors and just keep rolling your eyes in annoyance.
If this is supposed to be a series from women for women i am kinda disappointed with their standards for entertainment and would advise to stick with Sex and the City, that at least had some humor in it.
One star extra for the sometimes good choice of soundtrack.
The Act of Killing (2012)
From the Heart of Darkness
I got to know of this movie when reading about the follow up documentary dealing with the victims of the mass murder in Indonesia. As other review already summarized the background for the movie i will try to focus more on its importance and meaning.
I sometimes wonder why i watch these movies like "Waltz with bashir", "Incendies", "Shooting Dogs" or "Shindlers List". All these movies deeply dive into the human soul and show how easy any human can commit the worst atrocities. It doesn't matter what color your skin is, how civilized your society is or what religion you belong to, nearly every spot on this god ridden planet is drenched in blood and has its own share of violence.
This movie has a different drive though as its not about the victims or staged by actors. These are the real killers talking and japing life on camera and reenact their deeds. They get kind of tricked into thinking this movie will somewhat redeem them or they are met with same understanding as most of their countrymen show towards them. Sometimes they are worried that the movie show them in a bad light but after a short moment of doubt they return to smiles. The hardest to stomach is sometimes how these people seem to be kind people feeding little ducklings or one guy trying to calm his weeping daughter and next moment you see them telling you how to crush people skulls or behead someone. I put one point of the rating as i didn't understand the dancing scenes and why the fat gangster always was in woman clothes even when they reenacted some killing scenes. Also i feel sometimes you could have tightened the narrative a bit more to make it a bit shorter.
I got a huge problem with the fact that countries don't try to work through their bloody history, Germany sure could have done better but at least they did for the most parts. But countries like Spain (Franco), Russia (Stalin),China (Mao) Japan (WWII Genocides), Indonesia here and many more can be found who silence anyone who will speak up or which history books tell straight out lies or play down the numbers. In Indonesia its a hard case, the history not only gets twisted, the killers from back then live a good life, benefiting from their deeds. They get invited to big paramilitary rallies, TV shows and people laugh with them when they retell their stories and how they crushed all communists. And this goes on till today as you can see how they collect money from Chinese merchants and threaten them in front of the camera. Some victim of the follow up movie had to move cause he got death threats for taking part in it.
This movie should be a big warning sign how you have to approach countries who deal that way with their history, of course you cant condemn everybody in this country but you should keep it in the back of your head. Also it shows how easy people are deceived, they maybe know in the back of their minds that its wrong what they are doing but if they are given an easy way out by the society and government (anti communist propaganda, Chinese prejudices) they will happily continue killing people. So if your countries trys to gather hate on certain groups, be the one to stand in its way, the people are strong united, if everyone turns away in fear nobody will find the courage to stand in the way of control. You don't even have to like or know that group that is targeted just think about what if it was you? Sooner or later hateful words wont be the only thing and some sadists will take it into their hand to end the "problem". Remember movies like that and don't remain silent cause me personally would rather be beaten to a pulp instead of living with the shame of watching the other way when innocent people get tortured or murdered in my neighborhood.
2 Broke Girls (2011)
One of the worst Sitcoms on live television
The show had great promise, some witty bombshell and an interesting concept with the money earned/lost of every episode. The problem is this show is so over the top and and unrealistic that it cant hold any ground. Do other sitcoms dwell on absurd situations? Of course they do! Do they use toilet humor? Of course some do! Do they have the trademark sexist pig dude that makes raunchy remarks all the times? They sure had (Barney, The Todd, Joey, Howard) But in the End most of the sitcoms at least tried to keep a civil face when showing the life of its protagonists and make us sympathize with them. In this crap show you have to deal with a diner that would have run bankrupt after one week. Waiters who insult the customers, a sweaty cook who works in his underwear, a cashier who is just there to throw around black people jokes or how old he is. And again the waitresses talking to each other instead of serving the people. And the Asian stereotype small boss lets his employees insult him all day without breaking a sweat. Why? Cause they are workhorses? Cause waiters are hard to obtain in the U.S.? Another problem is that people in this horse poo have a normal conversation every two seasons. The rest of the time its snide remarks from Max (Masturbation/Drug addiction/drug addicted mum/how she hit that/racial stereotype/her boobs), Sophie (Polands stone age, what she done last night with whom, sexual remarks) Oleg (sexual remarks). When i see Max and her blonde adherent babble it goes like this: "I wish i had that lamp" - "I had that lamp inside me more then once" (laughtrack) or "We used to have a lamp like that, but then my mother sold it for crack". Damn i am so good i could write one liners for this show.
Don't get me started on the brilliant idea to make cupcakes to get some money in, wow so original, cupcakes are really haute bakery and totally nobody offers those. Instead they should have shown how these two do some really weird and absurd things for money that would be a much longer sticking theme with room for jokes. Instead they just use up the same jokes over and over again. Together with "Mom" this trash should be forever forgotten and never to return. Stick to good sitcoms like BBT, Modern Family, New Girl, Scrubs, Community.
I give it one Star for the boobs and one star cause i sometimes chuckled when oleg is on stage. The rest only earned a tired snort cause it was so predictable and unfunny. I think most of the positive reviews have been placed cause i cant think that some people "cant stop laughing" or really laugh from the heart at this garbage.
