Ships of Slaves: The Middle Passage (1997)
Poor sound editing overshadowed important narration,
The documentary itself is rated an 8 for our home schooling. Putting aside technical issues, for those interested in sharing that part of history that can no longer be named, content is well done. As always parents should preview and be prepared to discuss difficult subjects. Yes, history is sometimes shameful. No one alive today participated in slavery, and owning our past societal failings to live up to our American ideals must help to ensure our children do. Ms Allen soft narration in particular, is constantly overwhelmed by flutes and drums and other musical instruments. Resorted to closed captioning.
Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Music from the 40's and 70s, nothing else to recommend
Good grief this was awful. Another of the endless cgi monster movies with achingly loud sound effects for hearing impaired ear bud users. Dialogue is inane, and the sci-fi movies from the 1950s, like "Them" where atomic testing causes ants to mutate to the size of elephants was better plotted, (and higher rated on IMDb at 7.3)
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)
Wish I'd waited for Redbox
Was expecting a well crafted story with characters I would like to follow into sequels, so disappointed this movie didn't deliver. Thanks Ms. Rowling for your efforts, and know you and Mr. Yates will do better next time. (But I'll wait for Redbox on that one, just to be sure you're all out of your slump).
The Girl on the Train (2016)
D+. Disappointing, disjointed, dull
Emily Blunt and the rest of the cast deserve kudos. The director and writers not so much.
The flash back format dispelled rather than enhanced the tension, and the dialogue particularly in the last 30 minutes of the film was distracting.
Passengers (2016)
Thank heavens, a competent sound editor, and zero aliens or mutants
At last in this genre, a film that ISN'T 90 minutes of inaudible dialogue coupled with wall reverberating scores/sound effects and continuously under-lit scenes purporting to be atmospheric.
This is a well written and acted love story set in a beautiful space backdrop. The egocentric protagonists are in peril from a hostile environment--not otherworldly life forms--in a plausible and linear plot. There are the usual deus ex machina moments, and it's a bit frenetic building to the climax, but science fiction is a welcome relief from decades of science fantasy.
