Baccano! (2007)
One of the Best
Now, I am a die-hard fan of the popular anime, such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Fairy Tail, Attack on Titan, One Piece, etc. However, this is by far my favorite anime of all time. Consisting of only 16 episodes, that's all this shows needs. It accomplishes in such a short time what other shows often need hundreds of episodes to complete. The storyline is so intriguing and perfectly done that I can't even imagine anything being changed. You would think with such a short time, that you would have under developed characters and a flat storyline, right? WRONG! All of the characters are developed to their fullest, growing attachment to even those that are ruthless killers (*cough* Ladd Russo *cough*). The story is told out of order, but this just makes it even more interesting as the more you watch, the more pieces fall into place in the carefully interwoven plot. The musical score is amazing, the dub is fantastically casted, matching (and maybe even surpassing) the skill of the sub, it's full of everything you could ever want. Thieves, immortals, alchemists, mafia, dark humor, light humor, gore (gallons of it), and so much more. Give this show a shot. It is too underrated, and it deserves so much more attention for the amazing job that was done. No matter what you're a fan of, you can find it in this show.
Horns (2013)
Good: Better if you haven't read the book
I thought this movie was very well done. The casting and pacing was good, and the storyline was intriguing. That being said, I saw this movie after I had already read the book. Now, this makes the movie a bit harder to watch. The book was excellent, with constant switches from past to present, heavy symbolism and connection back to reoccurring themes. In my opinion, the book was so excellent and well put-together, that a two hour movie had to struggle to just keep up. In fact, that is what this movie did. It overlapped characters, ignored some very important story lines (such as the origin of the horns), and just didn't feel as deep as the book did. However, this can be forgiven. For, the movie was well put-together. While they didn't have enough time to be as deep as I would have hoped, the movie was able to make an intriguing story, even if it was different than the original novel. My sister had not read the book prior to watching the movie, and she absolutely loved it. This is proof that the movie is excellent to movie watchers, with heavy themes and dark comedy. I still very much enjoyed the movie, even though it was different than what I had been hoping for. But, they can't be held to blame. The movie had two hours to achieve what Joe Hill had 440 pages to accomplish. And while different, it was achieved. Would recommend, but be wary if you've read the book.
Into the Woods (2014)
Don't understand the hate
I'm going to start off by saying that I don't understand why I'm one of few reviews higher than a 1. I saw the movie with my family, and I loved it! Many people are saying that they didn't know it was a musical; well the movie is based off an actual musical that has been on stage for decades now. If you saw Disney was making a 'Wicked' movie, would you be enraged if they didn't tell you it was a musical? But on to the movie. I found very few flaws that I can name. The acting was superb, and the singers were all wonderfully talented. Anna Kendrick is a personal favorite of mine, but all the others I found had wonderful voices. The songs were catchy, and the plot was enticing. All the reviews are griping about that it deserved a stronger rating than PG, and Disney made this one too dark, but I think that was the purpose (also when has Disney ever shied from dark themes? Look at ANY Disney villains death). PG doesn't necessarily mean your kid might be able to handle it. It just means it wasn't strong enough for PG-13. Know your kids, and do some research. Again, this musical has been out for decades. The violence was pretty toned down in my opinion. I didn't see a drop of blood, and most of the violence was off screen. (SPOILER) For instance, with the stepsisters' feet mutilation, and eye loss, all of it was handled without a drop of blood, and treated in a comical manner. I'm sure your kids (if you have any) have seen how to train your dragon, it's the same concept. Now, I'm not saying that every kid might he able to understand/handle it. It's based on the brother Grimm stories, not the fluffy Disney versions. It's actually handled spectacularly well considering the stories they were based off of. However, if you still think its too heavy, then don't take your kids. Overall, I thought it was done spectacularly well, and I've been singing the songs all day. Don't be daunted by the other reviews, I'd recommend it. If you have kids, be the judge of what they can handle and decide from there. 10/10
