Anand (1971)
Wow!
I have fallen in love with Hindi film. Anand is a film with so much substance, thought provoking. In terms of Humanism, right up there with the likes of 'It's a Wonderful Life'
Such a powerful film. Anand the man with the terminal illness looks forward to each day more than those around him. They dread the day he will die as it nears, yet he remains steadfast. He changes the lives of those around him. Great Story.
Perhaps the most moving scene is when Anand dies, he cannot bear the pain of his death, not for himself, but for his best friend Bamushai. A shocking selflessness at a moment where he is at his most true(his death bed) In the end there is a real sense of transcendence, you real feel a triumph over the concept of death. The best example is the voice recording. Anand has died, but the recording plays on, so in memory Anand will live on, eternally.
It should really be a tragic story, but this is an uplifting story about a damned man. Well worth watching more than once.
Death Note: Desu nôto (2006)
Masterpiece
Death Note is a great work of art. It was the first anime I watched having been finally convinced Anime was worth a try and I have to say, I enjoyed every minute. Life and death in the hands of a teenager. Thats such a shocking concept, Very captivating.
What sticks most in mind as my favourite things about Death Note are 1) The masterful presentation of a Byronic Hero in Yagami Light. He becomes very dark, evil at times, yet you still route for him, and secretly hope that he will succeed in creating his new world. 2) The 'valediction' by Ryuk where he says '. Well, it was good while it lasted... We killed some boredom, didn't we? ' just reaffirms what a great piece of literature death note is. That piece of metatexuality just puts the icing on the cake for me. I will surely watch more anime soon.
The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
Pretentious
I was really looking forward to this movie, having never read the book, the premise seemed to indicate an emotional roller-coaster. In the end I felt shortchanged.
Perhaps it's meant for a certain audience, but it has certain ludicrous moments, the worst being the scene where those three are throwing eggs at the girls car. You wouldn't believe it was written by an adult.
I found the ending a bit surprising. Is Gus' eulogy supposed to be enough? I don't see how a few good words from a dead lover can be compensation for his death. They maybe could have done more to create a sense of transcendence but again, I have not read the book.
Overall,I did not care for the characters, did not feel anything when Gus died. Couldn't have cared less about how Hazel would cope, the writer did not do enough with the characters to make me route for them, but maybe I'm a psychopath?
