Jack and Jill (2011)
Not Great, But Not One of the Worst
I personally found this movie to be average. While not every joke hit home for me, there were a few that made me laugh every now and again. Adam Sandler may not be great in drag, but he gave an alright duel performance. The story and characters were not too strong, but that's not why we watch Adam Sandler films.
My biggest problem is how over hated this movie is. I hear so many people calling it both one of the worst comedies and one of the worst overall movies ever made. I say, is it really "one of the worst" bad? I would understand some hate, but "one of the worst ever"? I don't think that's warranted at all.
I'll Be Home for Christmas (1998)
I Won't Be Home For Christmas
I hate this movie. It is unpleasant to watch. If there is anything positive to say, there are one or two funny jokes in the film, but that does not excuse this film's flaws. The story is generic, falling into the typical wacky scenarios road trip movie category. The story is also incredible mean spirited to the main character, Jake. However, I feel no sympathy for him since he is one of the worst examples of a self centered jerk ever put into a Disney movie. He not only mistreats his girlfriend, Allie, and family, but also acts like everyone he meets is beneath him and only there to service him. However, Eddie, the villain, makes Jake look like a saint. Eddie is one of cinema's biggest tools, hitting on Allie right in front of Jake and treating Allie like she's nothing more than a hot body. At least Jake and Allie had common interests and occasional moments of chemistry, so he seems like the better boyfriend, which seems impossible. Also, writers fail when they need to write a character whose sole purpose is to make the main character look better. Also, the ending is completely out of character for Jake, comes out of nowhere, and feels incredibly insulting. This might very well be the worst live action movie Disney ever associated themselves with, truly deserving to be a terribly reviewed box office bomb.
Keeping Up with the Steins (2006)
Starts Off Bad, But Gets Better
This film was evenly balanced in my opinion. Going in, I set my expectations very low. And, for the first half hour or so of the movie, my expectations were met. Most of the first half hour of the film is boring and not very funny, mostly low brow gags, especially Garry Marshall's nude scene. However, after the first half hour of the film, it started getting better. The film became funnier and I actually started becoming interested in the characters, particularly the kid. However, at that point, I still hated Garry Marshall's character for his ideologies. Then, during the film's last half hour, the film becomes really funny. I still didn't like Garry Marshall's character too much, but I liked the maturity that the kid gained and I even started warming up to characters I initially hated, Garry Marshall being the exception to that. If you can put up with a half hour of blandness for an hour of decent comedy or are interested in learning a bit more about the Jewish culture, then give it a watch on Netflix. If not, just skip to the Bar Mitzfah scene at the end.
