Midnight, Texas (2017)
Nearly as bad as South of Hell
At least the first episode of Midnight was half decent, entertaining, and I was looking forward to the next episode....which could barely keep my interest. I put that down to jet lag, but I've just turned off the TV after 10 minutes of the third episode. How could it get so awful? It's not very well acted, so the characters are not 'real' enough. True Blood was fantastic, slick, sexy, dark and very very funny; maybe if HBO had done Midnight Texas it would have been 10 x better. In fact it would probably have worked rather well if it was given the grind house treatment like Ash Vs Evil Dead or Blood Drive. Sadly, as it stands, it's become unwatchable tosh.
Zoo (2015)
Oh dear
I enjoyed the first series, I love cheese and ham, but the second series got so bad I've given up halfway through and in my mind I've rewritten the plot so the cast all get devoured by the animals. The only way hammy B movie grade acting can work for me is with a good script, but Zoo is dire. It can't be the actors' fault, I've seen them in other shows, so shame on the script writers and director. For whatever reason James Wolk seemed to have a permanent smirk on his face in series 2 which was the deal breaker in me giving up on the series. Poor Alyssa Diaz, I think we saw the the results of her working on Zoo in Ray Donovan.
Z Nation (2014)
Laughed until my guts fell out!
Z Nation is that perfect mix of the classic horror B movie; humour and gore. The plot is by no means original, but the characters and script are great. The zombies are horrific and the effects are gruesome, with some truly unforgettable laugh out loud scenes. Zombienado - genius! And the scene with the bell. A couple of the episodes go off piste with deeper story lines. No-one can match The Walking Dead for sheer class, but Z Nation doesn't try; it has taken a fast paced, action packed and tongue in cheek approach. There are some new twists to the post apocalyptic world, like the zombie shooting contest, and the sinister womens' refuge. Doc is easily my favourite character. I am over the moon there is going to be a second series.
The Librarians (2014)
Almost unwatchable
I was looking forward to this show, but the pilot was dire. It was like they'd used a story Warehouse 13 had binned. I've loved Christian Kane since Angel so I was most disappointed. At first it was quite a surprise to see Noah Wyle acting like a mad professor, but that wore thin after 5 minutes and just became irritating, though I gather he will only be making intermittent appearances in future episodes. I was hoping for more of an Indiana Jones type approach to this series, and maybe if the writers had produced a more serious and well researched script it could have worked. Maybe kids will enjoy it, I don't know.... I won't wax lyrical about how bad the first 2 episodes are, so I'll sum them up in one word; moronic.
