Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV (2024)

Could have been so much more

This felt like buzzfeed journos lobbing softballs at the subject when they should have been throwing fastballs straight at the heart of it. (Continuing with the baseball analogies) they were playing with the 2nd, 3rd & 4the string players! Where were the heavy hitters? Besides Drake it felt like they talked to a lot of people who weren't even on set or who didn't experience anything except being worked hard and feeling uncomfortable now and then. Where was Amanda? Jaime Lynne? The cast of Icarly that they claimed was the worst in terms of abuse? Instead we get the annoying Producer Kate interjecting herself into the narrative at every opportunity. Also it gave us nothing new and verifiable (again except for Drake, that was very brave of him) most of the things they discuss have been circulating on twitter or elsewhere for years. We all KNOW Dan is a creep with a proclivity to make really inappropriate jokes for kids tv and is an all around disgusting human.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad this came out and it's shedding more light on the dark side of kiddywood and I'm so grateful to all the courageous people who've come forward, my poor review isn't for them it's for the people who made this documentary. It could have been so much more but to me it felt like a very, very soft and safe production.

The Disappearance of Maura Murray (2017)

Horrible

Today marks 20 years since Maura disappeared. I have long been interested in her case as it's one of the more baffling disappearance cases out there and she has an unusual first name that I share with her so it's always felt more personal to me. The journalist Maggie doesn't uncover anything, everything she 'uncovers' is already well known. She try's to sound smart by coming to her 'own' conclusions but it just comes across as laughable. Her interview style is horrible as well, if she was asking me questions I'd just as soon smack her instead of answering. I wish this doc had been better quality, Maura's story deserves to be told and to be told well. Maggie and the production team failed miserably in my opinion. I hope that one day we find out the truth of what really happened that night.

Daughters of the Cult (2024)

Wild story, weird production

The story is insane and the documentary is worth watching but the production/editing was so freaking weird. The interviews felt like a really bad reality tv show which I felt did a disservice to the 'survivors'. It made them annoying and hard to empathize with instead of connecting with them and their experience. Whoever did the editing allowed so many things to be repeated over and over and over again that the repetitiveness was also an annoying factor and it jumps all over the place, there was no need to try and be clever, just tell the story linearly. It didn't need to be 5 episodes either, it could have been done in 3. The mental gymnastics it must take to believe and convince others to believe your narcissistic delusions boggles the mind. Interesting story, really weird production.

Fool Me Once (2024)

Like Hallmark tried to make a drama thriller and failed

This show is utterly ridiculous. The acting is obnoxious. The main character is supposed to be some smart badass but in actuality she's the dumbest most frustratingly stupid character I've seen on a show in a long time. I wanted to scream at her for being such a dumbass.

This show feels like hallmark tried to make a mystery drama thriller and failed. I think the story could have been represented better, I'll admit it's the actors/acting that annoyed me most and made the show almost unwatchable. Love Armitage but he's not even in the show. Maybe I'm just in the wrong mood and the show didn't hit the spot. Maybe if I'd watched it on a dif day I'd have liked it. Maybe but probably not. This was a fail for me.

Unknown: The Lost Pyramid (2023)

I thought this was supposed to be about historical egypt

This isn't about Egypt and her historical mysteries. It's about her extremely egotistical head of antiquities Dr Zahi Hawass. He's absolutely insufferable. I understand having pride in your nations history however his way of going about it is more about him and his love for himself than the good of Egyptian archaeology. He is the extreme opposite of early archaeology, the era of foreign excavators. He hogs everything for himself and refuses to work with others. He needs to find a middle ground and stop making it the Hawass show. Egypt deserves better than him. The world deserves better.

Besides Hawaas and the obviously staged aspects of the show it does let you glimpse into the beauty that is and was Egypt. For that it gets 4 stars.

Shantaram (2022)

Are you kidding me Apple!!!?

Why in the world would Apple cancel this wonderfully beautiful and adventurous TV show!!? I'm flabbergasted at the stupidity of networks these days. Intelligent story telling with great acting? NOPE, it's gotta go for some mindless BS. I can't tell you how disappointed I was when I found out we wouldn't be getting a second season of Shantaram.

Shame on you Apple

Charlie Hunnan and the rest of the cast were incredible with engaging storylines that made me want to know more and see where their story's went. Not to mention the beautiful back drop of India where their stories unfold.

Apple made a mistake letting this one go.

Little Fires Everywhere (2020)

I basically had to force watch the show because every time Kerry Washington was on screen her facial expressions were so off putting and insanely annoying that I was repulsed physically and emotionally. Seriously WTF was with the constant sneer. I get it was in line with her character but figure out another way to look angry other than the stupid lip/teeth thing. Ugh!

Was this a good show? Not really. The only character I liked was Izzy. Reese's character was just like in Big Little Lies. A nosy, unhappy rich mother except in this show it was desperate and insufferable.

Kerry's face made the show nearly unwatchable.

In the Dark (2019–2022)

Season 3??

The show was fun until season 3. The whole Max thing and court stuff just got way to ridiculous. (Facepalm emoji) way too unbelievable and Murphy... Murphy is just an abhorrently petulant character (even though I can relate to so much about her, wonder what that says about me lol).

Im just really disappointed in the direction they've taken with the show and the development of her character. They had an opportunity to to keep the show watchable but in my opinion they ultimately failed. Im not invested in a blind, revenging murderer anymore.

Rip Murphy and her issues. I'm over it. Btw I'm glad Max is gone.

The English (2022)

Happily surprised

First few minutes started out sooooooo cheesy and while some of that cheese has carries over into each episode the rest has been surprisingly enjoyable. Emily Blunts character is badass and I have to admit she makes me want to travel back in time, fall in love and unalive some bad people.

It does annoy me that everything is blamed on "The English". People seem to forget the atrocities committed by the Spanish, Portuguese, French etc... it wasn't just one race or culture that came to the new world...

Anyway, I enjoyed this show, it's worth the watch. Beautiful scenery, badass moments even with the cheese and oh love.. who doesn't wish for an epic love story?

Sigh.

Ancient Apocalypse (2022)

Barely scratches the surface

I enjoyed the show, have been fascinated by Hancock's ideas since I was a child however I wish this show could have gone deeper, felt like it just scratched the surface of one subject in each episode. I also wish he showed more of the ruins and less of him talking awkwardly into the camera. In my opinion this show could have been so much more impressive. Hopefully it's just the beginning of more like it to come. History as we've been taught is undoubtedly wrong, not saying all or any of Hancocks ideas are correct but at least he's asking questions and challenging the accepted narrative. Glad Netflix gave him a platform to share this fascinating alternative look into our past.

The Midnight Club (2022)

Almost didn't watch

Because of the negative reviews, glad I decided to watch anyway. No it wasn't horror for horrors sake and yes it was about teen drama however I thought it was really well done and the culmination of the story was beautiful. Young lives facing death and the relationships they make while trying to deal with their scary new reality. Call me a sap but I may have shed a tear or two at times. There were a few spooky moments, nothing crazy. For me it was all about the story and the stories they told each other.

In my opinion it's worth the watch if your in the mood for that type of show

Also I want to live in that gorgeous house! Ghouls and all!

Critics are afraid to offend their own shadow these days, so out of touch they have no idea what the viewers appreciate. Ignore them and watch this unless you enjoy the woke propaganda shows they've been shoving down our throats lately. Here's to some good ol' American badassery.

There is so much I could say about how ridiculous this show is. Instead of a long rant I'm just going to say.. what a horrendous and horribly produced show. I'm offended by the stupidity of it and that discovery has such a low opinion of its viewers. That being said, I've watched every episode and will probably watch future upcoming seasons (facepalm emoji)

I almost didn't start this show because of the bad reviews, glad I decided to take a chance anyway. I quite enjoy it. Sure it's not a fast paced show but I love the character development and the very creepy, very eerie vibe. Only 3 Ep in and looking forward to more.

Nothing about this film is redeemable. Nothing. The acting is horrendous and contrived. The cgi is subpar and the storyline is just plain stupid. Save your money and your brain cells, don't go see it.
