Kshatriya (1993)
An Epic of Indian Cinema
JP Dutta dislikes the movie himself!
However, with the exception of some corny scenes in London, this move is as good and Epic you can get from Bollywood.
The problem with this film is JP was lured into implementing commercial aspects instead of his usual authenticity into this film. Maybe he was trying to win over the mass after their failure of his earlier films.
Despite this, the movie is still visually stunning. The action is probably the best ever seen in Bollywood alongside Sholay. The performances are good as in all Dutta films.
An Epic of Indian Cinema.
Batwara (1989)
A True Epic
Probably the least absorbing of all of JP Dutta's early films.
I think the movie slightly suffers because of the age and status of his 2 main protagonists, Dharmendra and Vinod Khanna. JP should have gove for Sunny Doel and Anil Kapoor for their respective roles.
Otherwise, the film as quite brilliant in dramatic terms. Like all his films, technically it is almost flawless. The performances are excellent.
The movie deals with the growing tension between the land owners and the tenants prior to the British leaving.
A must for Bollywood film lovers.
Yateem (1988)
A Fantastic Film
The story depicts the plight of an orphan. Sunny Doel and Farha give magnificent performances and have never looked better on screen. Khulbasan as the father delivers his greatest performance. Amrish Puri in a cameo is menacing as is Danny.
JP Dutta, the master film maker wonderfully depicts the narration of the story of Krishna and his search for name, destiny, love and revenge.
The cinematography is visually stunning, and the score like all his films is haunting.
A definite must see for the elite Bollywood fans.
Ghulami (1985)
A Classisc
The film marked the debut of one the greatest film directors in Bollywood, JP Dutta.
It deals with the inequality of land ceilings in rural India. It focuses on a young boy who grows up to rebel against the cruel land owners, who have been ripping of poor farmers. Dharmendra delivers his greatest performance, aided fabulous performances by the supporting cast.
Technically, the movie is great like all JP Dutta films. The score is haunting. The dialogues by OP Dutta is brilliant. The screenplay is as detailed as you can get.
A movie that should not be missed by any movie fan.
Hathyar (1989)
A Masterpiece
One of the greatest Hindi films ever made. Why Bollywood never mentions this as a all time classic? Just goes to show they will never grow up from the run of the mill trash they enjoy. The move deals with circumstances leading young people to turn to crime. Its very authentic and leaves an ever lasting impact on you that you will end up seeing more than twice.
Any decent movie fan would agree that this is a fantastic movie. The direction, script, dialogues, cinematography, score and performances are first class. A true epic, from arguably the most under-rated director in Hindi film history.
