Boogie (2021)
Could've been better. Could've been much worse.
While for the most part Boogie may seem like a tonally confused, mess of a film, I find it to be more or less saved by its incredible amount of passion, great characters, and the few good actors that portray them. Especially Taylour Paige whose performance is as good if not better than her's in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom. Can't wait for Zola.
Wreck-It Ralph (2012)
Wreck It Ralph
Wreck-It Ralph is a compilation of beautiful animation, beyond fantastic voice acting, and well thought out humor. It looks great with Disney Plus' 4k transfer and John C Reilly, Sarah Silverman, and Jack McBrayer can do almost no wrong when voicing an animated character due to their distinct and unique voices. Disney has shown time and time again how they can take such a simple, kindergarten level message (don't judge a book by its cover, treat others the way you want to be treated, etc.) and not only teach it to children but re-teach it to adults. And not only re-teach it to adults but re-teach it in a deeper, almost philosophical way.
Sorry to Bother You (2018)
Insane
Ok... This Is... Um............... What Did I Just Watch.
At first this seemed normal. Almost to normal to the point where I thought "Oh no this is gonna be pretty boring isnt it".
But then... But then things got interesting.
I would say (Without Spoiling) the first moment I realized how unique this movie was (at least compared to my prediction) was when he started physically appearing in the calls. Then the overdubbed white voice came into play and I new it was taking some risks and it was paying off. Then... the rest happened... and it was amazing.
I watched it once: 6/10
I watched it twice: 8/10
I watched it once more: 9.5/10
Love, Simon (2018)
Better Than Expected
I thought this movie was gonna be just ok. It looked a little cheesy and stupid but it far exceeded my expectation.
Although it seems that it would only appeal to a small teen based audience, this is a movie that people of all ages and tastes can find something they like in.
The acting from every character is phenominal, from the main character Simon played by Nick Robinson, the best friend played by 13 Reasons Why actor Katherin Langford or even Simons father played by the amazingly talented Josh Duhamel who we havent seen given a chance to do a good job in movies like Transformers or Safe Haven.
There are a few plot holes but they can be completely put out of mind when you are wrapped up in the beautiful story of Love, Simon. 9.2/10
The Grinch (2018)
Typical Illumination
The Grinch was fine but not great. It was another one of many examples of Illumination making painfully average movies.
Benedict Cumberbatch did a fine job as the Grinch and Keenan Thompson did a great job as Mr. Bricklebaum, but other than that it wasn't good.
I did not expect a faithful adaptation of the other movies but the first 2 acts of this movie are barely an adaptation at all. They removed things they should have kept and kept things they should have gotten rid of. Plus most of the Children's story line did not need to happen and shouldn't have.
