Hirune-hime: Shiranai watashi no monogatari (2017)
Calling a film boring is boring, but this film is boring.
Boring characters that are never really fleshed out or given any depths and development do weird stuff the film doesn't bother to explain. I made it until 1 hour in and finally surrendered due to complete detachment to anything that was going on. For the entire time I had no idea who any of the guys were and of what importance the tablet was. Some random bad guys in black uniforms were chasing some random girl that apprently likes to escape into a dream realm processing problems she is confronted with subconsciously in her life. Or whatever... It's impossible to care about anything since it's all just a big blur of uninteresting scenarios. I'm sure in the end one will get an explanation that ties all the open ends together and makes sense of this big mess by drawing some connections and explaining the relevance of her name, the tablet, her mother etc. But I wasn't willing to waste 2 hours of my life being bored and then getting a half-assed standard 101 anime plot.
Thanks, but I will stick with Chihiro, Paprika, Perfect Blue and so on.
Koto no ha no niwa (2013)
Garden of Cheese
I wonder what would have happened if his 30 year old teacher didn't look like an 18 year old model but rather like a fat and ugly hag. Would've changed the story quite a bit I guess because basically this 15 year old sniveler is just physically attracted by that hot random girl. Overall this film is so flat, dumb and superficial, I really wonder what kind of people watch it and actually get emotionally involved. I'll rate it 2/10 because there were probably many talented animators involved who put a lot of effort into the really nice visuals. Apart from that it's a film solely made for teenagers in puberty who "can relate" to being so damn special.

Sekkusu to Bitchi
Japanese Rap - a musical oxymoron. Neither cool nor funny. Just plain awkward and embarrassing. I sat there for 120 minutes trying to figure out what in gods name Sono was trying to do with this flick. Rapping ridiculously stupid (I don't want to call it) lyrics and all those naked chicks whose IQ would add up to 10 just gave me goosebumps. He just can't be serious! This movie is a bad joke. I was basically cringing throughout the whole film and felt a strong need to shower afterwards. Sonos cinema has always been misogynistic and blunt but this simply goes too far. If you're a Sono fan you can risk a glimpse but don't expect a creative and facetious ride like his latest work Jigoku has been.

I'm deeply sorry for disliking your favourite movie.
But damn, that was a huge calculated load of rubbish. Take a super cute, good looking girl that makes a good cry face, an innocent convicted and a compulsive tear jerker story - voilà: standard dull korean drama. It's even worse than that. There weren't plot holes, the whole movie itself is a plot hole. First: The extremely incompetent and stupid court and (of course *yawn*) corrupted police work that made me want to bump my head on the table. Apparently constables in Korea lack brain or are just evil. Maybe both. Second: Somehow the entire jail was filled with dinky altruists that love and sacrifice themselves for each other. How sappy is that?! Third: The standard happy ending. Love, peace, harmony and everything is hunky-dory... Seriously, what happened to the Korean Cinema? So many monotonous K-Dramas. That's neither touching nor beautiful but terrible and boring fast food cinema. Hopefully Park Chan-wook et al. can rescue the sinking ship.
Forma (2013)
Challenging but worth it
I definitely can understand people who disliked this film. But one thing is for sure: It offers a lot of thought provoking stuff to talk about. The story starts relatively easy going with two former school friends meeting again after years. Slowly but steadily the movie starts to evoke a bad feeling that something is going on beneath the surface and it roughly twists around and starts to become extremely evil without even having to show brutal or disgusting scenes. Ayumi Sakamoto really knows how to create an impervious atmosphere, she later said in a Q&A that she deliberately didn't use any close ups but knee shots and long shots to make sure to capture every emotion of all the present characters, so you kind of feel that you're right in the middle of it all. And it really worked! Also, little spoiler (!), she said that she didn't really write the script for the final scene but talked the actors through it all one time and then let the situation evolve its own way.
All in all I was really surprised by how well the movie was made for a debut and how good the impact of the maleficent atmosphere actually was. If you happen to like Shinya Tsukamotos movies, who she worked for as a director assistant, you should certainly give it a try!
(sorry for bad English)
