Vertigo (1958)
Memai
I think this film is good. First reason is that many things in it are connected with the keywords of this film, "vertigo". For example, images and back music in its opening. Images express a spiral and back music seems to continue eternally so we can feel vertigo like the main character feels in this movie. There are some vertigo shots too. The audience usually knows the character's feelings from what he says and how he is but in this film, we can know it by how camera is moved.
Another reason is the structure of its story. In the first half of it, the main person is Madeleine. In the second half of it, the main person is Scottie who is fascinated by Madeleine. The part I was surprised at is that the fact of murder is revealed early in the second half. Generally, the key points in films are revealed in the last scene but Hitchcock didn't do so. Because of it, audience can watch both sides, Scottie who loves Madeleine enthusiastically and Judy who can't forget love for Scottie while we have known that Judy is Madeleine. We can also watch this film while we expect the last scene too.
Taxi Driver (1976)
Taxi Driver
I think this film is good because of two reasons.
First, both the first scene and the last scene are the same. In the beginning, main character drives a taxi and he disappears into the darkness. In the last scene, he does the same thing. I think that ordinary films are not like this because through stories, main characters change and they become better, happy ending. In this film, main character does not change. His loneliness may increase through the story.
In addition to it, I think the expression of loneliness is good in this film. For example, Travis sees the vulgar town in his taxi, he writes a diary and talks to the mirror. Back music makes these scenes lonelier too. The most impressive scene is that he breaks the TV. I think the reason is that he cannot accept ordinary happiness because he is so a lonely man. He cannot sleep without drags and he doesn't have any people he can rely on. However he tries to make a girlfriend, he fails to it and becomes lonelier. And so finally he plans to assassinate the next president. I think loneliness makes people madness.
Blow Out (1981)
Middonaito Kurosu
I think this film is interesting because of two reasons.
First, this film has the two sides. One is thriller and another is romantic. Firstly, this film is mainly thriller. When a car is shot by someone and falls down the river, I felt a thrill. On the other hand, I found a romantic side. For example, when Sally faces a risk at the subway, Jack tries chasing her feverishly. The scene I like the best is that Jack holds his head when he hears Sally's scream in the last. Because of this scene, I can clearly understand his love for her. This film has two sides and so I think an audience can enjoy it very much.
Second, this film is like a Hitchcock's film. When we watch it, we have many questions in the former part. And at last, we can finally find the answer for almost everything. For example, in the film, Liberty Bell is a key point and in the middle part, man gazes at its board three times. We cannot understand why he does so but it is the important scene in this film. In addition to it, camera moving has a large effect. The most impressed scene is that camera moves in a circular motion. It shows us that the main character is shocked and in an absent sort of way. When I saw this scene, I felt sickly and covered my eyes. It means that I could feel the same thing he feels. This is exactly a remarkable attraction.
The Conversation (1974)
The Conversation
I like this film because we can understand a main character's mental state clearly. The most interesting thing for me is that Harry Caul is looked over a curtain. Because of this technique, we can feel his loneliness and suspicion. He does a wiretapping and he does not show his real feelings. The technique makes us think of his feelings implicitly.
In addition, although he does a wiretapping, he is picked up calls by someone too. He believes only what he looks but it is not enough. There are many sides in the world but most people do not notice it. This problem is involved with the Watergate. Before it happened, people did not think that someone listen what they said secretly. This film makes them have wariness about wiretapping.
The Birds (1963)
Tori
I think this film is good because it contains many ideas which make audience attract unconsciously. First, I think lovebirds are the symbols of weakness. In this film, both weakness and strength are compared in many scenes. Melanie looks like a tough woman. Her outlook is strong ― her posture, she wears shoes with very high heels and her nail color is vivid red. When Mitch's sister is attacked by birds, Melanie helps her. But when Melanie is attacked, she could not avoid birds' attack by herself so she is helped by Mitch. In the last scene, although Melanie and Mitch's mother are not good at each other, when Melanie is injured, she is even helped by Mitch's mother. And also Mitch's sister helps lovebirds at the end of the film. It shows that people have to help a weak man and if they do not help him, he cannot live. For example, Mitch's ex-girlfriend is killed because she could be helped by no one.
Second is that there are some relationships between this film and other Hitchcock's films. For example, relationship between mother and son appear in all films. And always mother loves her son strongly and she feels jealousy for other women. In the birds, Mitch's mother loves Mitch strongly and she does not like Melanie but in this film, there is Mitch's sister too. His mother says "if Mitch disappears, I will be alone." But it is not true. If he disappears, there will be her daughter, she won't be alone. It means she cannot love her daughter really, only love Mitch. The role of Mitch's sister is to accentuate of the strength of mother's love to her son.
Otousan no tabako (2007)
Otousan no tabako
This film is about a girl whose father is dying. She is always asked to buy tabako by him. Although she knows that it is not good for his health to have a smoke, she would not turn down his request. Though her errand, she meets many people and her feeling is changed.
When I saw it, I wondered why a little girl bought tabako on the way home. When she came back home, I could understand that she bought it not or herself but for her father. This construction is interesting because the audience has some questions and finds answers for them through watching films. Because of good construction like that, the audience enjoys films without getting tired.
The Lunch Date (1989)
The Lunch Date
This movie is about the woman who wouldn't be credulous at first but gradually changed because of the green salad. Her face expression really changes from the fast half to the last and the audience's feeling becomes warm and kind. When I saw this film, I was interested in the man who shared the salad with her. At first, I thought that how rude he was because he ate hers. In the last, however, I noticed he was a kind person. There are not so much dialogues but I understand their feeling change clearly. The change of my feeling to him is interesting for me. When films contain some unexpected things, it becomes interesting and attracts the audience.
Safety Not Guaranteed (2012)
Safety Not Guaranteed
The main character in this film is a woman, but there are other people and they have their own stories in terms of some regrets in the past. They regret themselves in the past and want to make up for their lost time. At the same time, many stories are progressing and because of it the audience enjoys it without getting tired. In particular, the story about the man who keeps on thinking of his ex-girlfriend but doesn't make up for their passing each other has reality and it is interesting.
No matter that his story is interesting, an explanation about time travel is difficult for me. I think if there were a little more explanation about it, it would be easier to understand. For example, the woman who lost her mother tries to stop her death but the audience doesn't know whether she could or not. I think that there should be a little description about it in the film.
Knick Knack (1989)
Knick Knack
I think the facial expression of the snowman is interesting. Although the snowman tries to escape out of the snow dome and join girls, he cannot do it. He says nothing during the film but the audience clearly understands what the snowman feels because of his facial expressions. In particular, this is an animation film and so I think that the expression is simple. These things make it easy for the audience to enjoy the film.
In addition, the composition of the story is interesting. This film contains many waves of feelings about the snowman. For example, first the snowman wants to join girls and become free. He does many things but he doesn't come out the snow dome. Then, he is afraid of his death because he almost drops down from a bookshelf. In the last, finally he comes out of the snow dome and not only the snowman but also the audience are happy but suddenly he is in the snow dome again. This last scene is unexpected and I think because of it, this film is very interesting.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
Three days in Kamakura
This movie is about an international couple who have no children and their relationship is not good. Then, they meet a half western child and their relationship becomes better through the communication.
When I saw this movie, I thought the language used in it was interesting. There is both English and Japanese. The Japanese woman, Keiko speaks English almost all the time but sometimes she speaks Japanese. I think the reason is that when her feelings are rising, she speaks Japanese unconsciously. It makes this movie more interesting.
In addition, the scene that David calls the police is heartwarming. No matter that David wants to get the boy as their child, Keiko doesn't. At first, their relationship is not good and because of the boy, it becomes better. Now, I think that if there is not the boy, their relationship remains good. Because when I compared the conversation between them, there was consideration for each other in the latter half. I found the change through not only their words but also their behavior. I think that both words and behavior are important to show their relationship.
Terry Tate, Office Linebacker (2002)
Terry Tate
When I saw this film, I had many active questions, for example why a man was attacked by a non-businessman and why the non-businessman was at the office. These questions were gradually solved during the film. I think that the audience enjoys the film to the last because they want to know the answer to these questions.
In addition, I think the reason the audience enjoys the film is that the film is close to their life. They can imagine the working condition in the film easily and visualize if there is a non-businessman like Terry Tate in their office. The familiar situation is easy to imagine and so the audience enjoys it.
Fish Out of Water (2005)
Fish out of Water
The main character of this movie is a man who is tired from busy traffic and decides to commute by boat. One day, as he usually uses the boat, an attractive woman asks him for a ride. First, he is happy to do it but after that, many people join with noisy music and he gets nervous and he stops using the boat. In this film, i am interested in the relationship between the man and the woman who looks at him. However , even though do not talk, they care for each other. Although they make only eye contact, they seem to understand their feelings. The relationship is mysterious and I am absorbed by it unconsciously. I think that the relationship without any words is interesting because audience imagines freely how they think about another person.
The Gift (2010)
The Gift
This movie is about a box which contains something. When people have it, something bad happens because of the box.
When I heard the title, I thought that the movie would be a happy story but it was not. Because the story is different from my imagination, it takes a long time for me to understand the real meaning of the box. I think this movie becomes better if people see it many times. In particular, I am interested in the boy who looks at the box at the end. In this movie, there are many mysteries and people have to think about it by themselves. And so this movie is good.
In addition, the camera-work surprised me. When I saw it, I felt as if I would be running with a robot. The camera moves along with the robot and patrol cars and so the film has realism. It makes the audience excited and thrilled.
Father and Daughter (2000)
Father and Daughter
This movie shows the relationship between daughter and father. In this movie, shadows have an important role. For example, it shows the relationship between people and her. I think in the last scene, when father and daughter hold each other, the shadow attracts me more than real people.
In addition, the use of contrast is interesting. The landscape does not change in this movie but the main character and people around her grow up. There are many memories with her father for her in the street and she makes many with other people too. While she grows up, she does not forget the existence of her father. I think it is good.
Whacked (1998)
This movie makes audience attract
I think this movie is good because the sound effects are good. For example, it begins with the wail of an ambulance siren. People do not know why a siren wails and so they are absorbed by it. In addition, when a man feels stress by balls, people play golf rhythmically. I think the contrast is very interesting and it shows his stress clearly. No matter that he is stressful, when he does golf on the top of the building, he enjoys doing it rhythmically too. Because of this sound, audience understands that he can vent his daily stress without any words.
In addition, the camera work is good. For example, when he feels stress on the golf course, there is a close up of his face on the screen. It is a good way to show how stress he feels when people do golf, camera moves across. I think it is good too.
