Kajillionaire (2020)
mildly interesting and fun
A little lesbian love story disguised as a thriller...kinda unique and fun...
None too cheecky or dramatic, staying true to its characters, an out of oridnary story of hobo thieves yet all felt kinda down to earth, flowing like the ordinary matters in every day life, business is business, no too emotional or climax of thrilling heroism or resolution to suspenses, like a flower of love blossomed at the corner of every day road, none too fancy but kinda nice and enjoyable...
Durante la tormenta (2018)
This guy did it again!
Fascinating concept built into a suspenseful story with exciting twists.
After The Body, The Invisible Guest, and now this, Oriol Paulo has become one of my faviourite directors. Just wonderful!
The ending is a bit weak, but nevertheless a highly fascinating and enjoyable ride!
As a movie this one is a solid 7/10 - 8/10, as a fan for both the genre and the director, I gave it 9/10.
The Favourite (2018)
Pretentiousness ruining a potentially better movie
I dont understand the fish eye cams, other than to show that "Im so unique and deep"? Seriously, other than that I just can't imagine a single bit of reason for it. Simply because It's not like fish eye cam is a new thing and no one ever tried to do something with it, imagine lowering the resolution of the film randomly making it blurry sometimes in between key scenes for no reasons, yeah, such new avant-garde, such creativeness, right? why no one does it? because it looks freaking bad and serves nothing other than repulsiveness to some audiences.
The plot is suspenseful most of time keeping the movie engaging, but on a story level it's average at best if not simply bad. Aside from being overly simplistic, there are hardly ever any character or character development, I understand it's a luxury to ask for realism even though with its almost absurd level budget or attention to the historic clothes and environment settings one would naturally expect so, then again one can only hope they can at least allocate 1% of that to the story to make it more reasonable or believable, to be at least worthy of all the dazzling fancy environment sets.
The movie is successful in depicting the most basic settings as to where the main characters are to the queen on relationship levels but that's about it, theres no character consistency after that, the queen is literally a cheap plotdevice with no personality of her own while the others had IQ and sympathy level that are conveniently changing every time the plot demands. One time a woman can threaten and nearly kill the protagonist directly with the slightest offense, next scene on the most serious intrusion of the highest seriousness, protagonist is merely "dismissed", giving her chance to fight back in the following plots.
Probbly coming from a background of Asia used to all kinds of palace drama and movies of all kinds of princes and concubines scheming and fighting to the death, tons of the events in the story just feels stupid and naive, with actions of the characters uncharacteristic and fake. Like the single most powerful person in the country even controlling the Queen should have easily executed a mere maid along with the maid's whole family or the entire crew when she dared to use poison in cups served to queen, and even nearly killing her. A person as smart as her controlling every fair in the palace would not give the maid chance to plead to queen with self inflicted fake wounds when she ordered her to leave, no, she'd go directly to the guillotine, as if not already ridiculous enough, later when the maid is with the queen, an audience is suddenly required denying the woman more chance with the queen? The writer or director needs to at least learn and understand how an audience with the King or Queen works, it's not the door lock of a 13 year old girl throwing tantrum, If the Queen had the power to banish the woman out of the country, how dare , how dumb and why would the smartest powerful woman threaten the Queen with life and death matter?? thats simply not her character, and it serves literally nothing, this is not modern time world where a public figure can not be killed easily,, (in the end she's indeed banished from the country losing all her power just because of one command from the Queen), etc etc, there are so many convenient development that are dumb on many levels to anyone used to historical dramas inside a feudal palace.
Another widely hated part is the background music which didn't bother me, on the contrary I found them just right for the atmosphere the movie is trying to create (could be that im watching it at 1.5-2x the speed rather than being forced to hear it all the way through in a closed theatre with heightened decibels though).
Anyway, an average movie with an overly simplified and most of the time dumb story that is simply sub par and in sharp contrast to the grandiose visuals and environment sets.
People say when the wave ebbs, the one that is naked is then exposed. IMO This movie is precisely the case showing exactly how much worth this director is at when he is no longer shrouded in this guise of ridiculousness of "omg so deep""so many meanings",
like an artist known for drawing abstract random mix of colors that hardly anyone appreciates, but are always touted by a certain group of people as "Deep! masterpiece!", when this artist is asked to simply draw a picture of something in real world for the beauty of it simply rather than drawing "deep things", alas, the result just turns out to be this painfully average and at most place sub par drawing, worthy literally no more than a rating of average, 5/10. Plus 1 point for the high budget fancy set pieces that are a joy to the eye.
I See You (2019)
Some advice to the directors or producers involved
Since earlier this film days had been spammed with 10/10 fake reviews, (you can even find a clear cut date before which its filled with all 9/10 -10/10 robotic reviews and after which all 1/10 to 3/10 rants), as a long time IMDB user adding my contribution to balance out the fake score.
El árbol de la sangre (2018)
An extremely simple and boring story told in unnecessarily complex way
A very simple story told in unnecessarily complex ways to make up a suspense that wasn't there to begin with and pays off in a disappointing way.
How can such a simple and dumb, boring story gets funded into such a high budget, well filmed and acted movie is really beyond me.
#### Synopsis (spoilers)
The story is told in retrospect from a young couple of boy and girl with all kinds of minor details, repeats of dialogues and pauses that eventually and finally build up into a tale of how their 2 mothers married after two attractive retired Russian mafia walked into their lives, one of which killed a kid for the donation of organs to save the girl when she was just born, and the other one later kills himself to donate his own organ to the boy dying from a car accident, when it was revealed to him the boy was his son by the mother before she dies from that same accident.
And thats about it, there are tons of other minor plot lines that dont do much other than to inflate the play time and make you think there are more than what there actually is, like the mother of the boy was lesbian in relationship with a writer researching about Russian mafia, the girl was infatuated with the other Russian mafia when he moved into her house after he was divorced from a marriage that was also remembered and told in details like the weddings and such, whom the girl relentlessly attempted to seduce, betraying the boy, the girl's mother's mental illness hearing a kid's screams all the time, hinted in the end as the voice of the boy murdered for the organ donation, how the girl's rich grandfather that made the Russian mafia kill the boy for donation are dealing with guilt, etc.
Busanhaeng (2016)
Hugely inflated and misleading score
With such a hight score of 8, one would think and come with the expectation that it'd be comparable to the likes of Shutter Island in plot, Dark Knight Rises in action and scale, and The Shawshank Redemption in theme, when in reality it was just another brainless rehash of the same plotline of already countless zombie movies that the audience had already seen countless times from the countless releases in recent years...
The only new thing this movie had it going is that only this time they were escaping on a train, which was literally a freaking one to one rip off of the anime Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress.... lol?
Checking what are written in the reviews you'd find numerous 10/10 ratings (lol?) of fans citing and counting no name Korean actors and actress like the back of their hand praising every thing related, jamming in all kinds of adjectives that you'd think you're reading some thanking letter to stars from fanboys or some sort... Jeez, since when is IMDB so infested with Kpop fans?
The Iceman (2012)
feels like reading a synopsis from a wikipedia
This is the dramatization of the famous serial killer iceman Richard Kuklinski, yet the whole movie feels like reading a synopsis from a wikipedia page, things just directly happen as a result that forwards the timeline of protagonist's life, without plots paving the way or any suspense or character interactions built before hand, throughout the whole movie there are also no memorable or distinct side characters. (Though I guess that's what a movie based on real life events can only be.)
The motivation and characterization of the protagonist is depicted as someone with anger issue and uncontrollable killing urge, most likely to make it easier for the audience to receive him as someone to take interest in and thus can keep interests in watching till the end, it's not only a compromise lowering the whole level of the movie, but also is directly opposite of what real life iceman was like, QUOTE: "I got no rise as such out of it... But the figuring it out, the challenge-the stalking and doing it right, successfully-that excited me a lot." (from wiki page, his recall after being caught)
Realistically it is also highly implausible for a rage killer to continue on successfully murder more than 100 people without being caught.

Amanda Knox (2016)
a freaking 2 minute story dragged into a 90 minute movie.
I hope you like random scenery of city, streets, crowd, people, arbitrary chosen completely irrelevant thoughts, comments, life ideals of people involved.... cause this is a freaking 2 minute story dragged into a 90 minute movie.
Wow the chief police officer for this case was born from this beautiful little town in Italy, here's 30 seconds of scenery of that place with his slow assed comments in the background playing on how he believed people should have free will but also held responsible for the things they'd done. cool story, dude,
Oh wow let's also check out how the journalist reporting the murder back then decided to framed their story and why and how they made that decision, what was their impression on the girl and what title he used for their story, and the reception of these stories, Front Page!? wow, SO INTERESTING.
Damn the protagonist must be devastated after being suspected of murder, wow cool im glad you asked, let's start with her childhood, her personality when she was little and then older, her family's opinion on her, her reasons for study abroad, her adventures in Italy before the murder happened, oh do you know he met this totally handsome boy that they started dating? here's their pictures, videos, etc...so interesti....
FFS, get on wtih the freaking point.
I watched the movie with averaging 2-3x the speed and still feel I'd better off just read the wikipage and thus saved all the wasted time.
#####synopsis (spilers)

Srpski film (2010)
Putting disturbing scenes into a film requires no talent
I watched this movie as an horror fan because of the "pushing boundaries" "ground breaking" comment the title got, and really regretted the time I spent doing so, tho it might be worth it as something that you had done, and the knowledge that you now know this kind of movie exists and what's the deal with it.
Like my title said, this movie literally does nothing other than putting disturbing things and scenes in it, there's no horror or intrigue, 2 points for the decent character buildings at the beginning, 1 point for coming up with a setting that is mildly suspenseful at the beginning, until you find out it leads to nothing other than a way of jamming disturbing and pointless scenes into this movie. I wanted to add 1 more point for the brave idea of "even this can be a film, and thats how i did it" from the director/producer/writer, but sooner or later someone's gonna do it, and this cant be the first to do it, so in the end, 3/10.
Martyrs (2008)
The groundbreaking, absolutely best and most genius of its genre
The ones calling this movie cheap or pretentious are like the dumb ones trying to find literature and poetry in Nobel prize winning scientific papers just to show off how well educated themselves are. This is a horror film for god's sake and horror is the thing this does so masterfully well that imo it can be considered representative of this whole genre, which is also thes reason I've no hesitation giving this movie a rating of 9.
As far as any man made story or entertainment in general, the best ones are that elicit the most emotions in you, which this movie so cleverly does, patiently drags you in while playing with your sympathy with heart striking suspense and intrigue, then with orbital velocity suddenly bashes your whole existence on an iron wall that you're left with nothing but wonder and awe.
Nearing the end of the movie, like in the plot, the director literally "transcended" all the audiences into such a height that even the most mundane motion of any characters, every little bit of extra audio or irregularities are all so suspenseful and at the same time frightening, this is literally horror at its best, something I almost ever experienced in any other horror movie.
On a more meta analyzing and commenting side, the most innovative part of this film is the perfect mix of seemingly supernatural mystery and in reality torture porn, too much of the former the torture part became pointless as they're not even set in reality (E.g. an arm cut of an immortal self repairing super entity is no longer frightening, with talking heads and self moving hands every where), while too much latter, the audiences became numb as in their heart they know in the end its all fake with tomato juices. With the perfect amount of supernatural mystery the audience have the anticipation and anxiety that literally anything is possible, while at the same time with a reality setting carefully maintained, everything in the story can have the maximum impact and weight on the audience's psychology.
Anyway, in the end, the filming, actresses, special effects all did their job perfectly in this movie, together they make this imo one of the best if not the most frightening horror film human ever produced.
He Never Died (2015)
Wasted opportunities
Such a good idea but such a bad execution, the whole movie has no story and no plot, only a showcase of inception of a movie idea, yet nothing, literally nothing at all built around and upon it, even the main character himself, his character is all over the place, one time he's dumb as fk, socially awkward, cares about nothing, and another time pbbly an IQ of an average person and cared about something, even talkative and all that, then in the end, he's suddenly this demi god, spewing essays and leaving one liners. A man that had experienced that much would have been a freaking saint wiser and more towards a character like gandalf, rather than this mess.
While the movie had a really intriguing idea, theres barely any plot or story in it, such a waste of material.
Mission: Impossible - Fallout (2018)
Action movie without a brain
Used to enjoy all the movies Tom Cruise churned out throught out the years and I really hoped i'd also do so for this one, but Fallout just felt too shallowy and empty. I really cant believe my eyes looking at a high rating of 8.1 on imdb.
In movies or any story, usually actions are there to achieve a certain goal and to proceed to the next point in a plot, but in this movie it just feels like its the plot are designed around to make this and that kind of certain action scenes happen. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that's how they put together their plot in the first place, nevertheless, as a result, the plot has gone to the point of even turning off certain percentage of brain will still not prevent you from thinking it as completely ridiculous and preposterous.
If you just want to enjoy endless awesome action of top notch production value and visual, this movie wont disappoint, but if you're also looking forward to a story, like the ones in Edge of Tomoorow, Jack Reacher, etc, dont even bother.
Self/less (2015)
literally average plus all the minus, so 5-1, 4 stars
All logic or reality is thrown out of the window when a widow and child have the hope of getting their husband back, a ruthless tycoon self made millionaire suddenly changed to this typical hollywood hero and decided to go the unreasonable length and totally illogical way of murdering at least 30+ people to save this one man, who himself in the first place already made the decision to die?,LOL?
And of course based on how the movie led the general audience to invest their emotions in, it's totally justified, story wise it might make some sense if it's for some random low IQ military brute misguided by pules of emotions, or a husband that places his wife and daughter above anything else like the owner of the original body, but this ruthless self made billionaire? for what?
There's even this hilarious scene that made me cringe to no end when the protagonist is murdering everybody in this, probabaly the lab where the biggest and highest scientific biological achievement ever in human history is done, a mechanic came up raising his hand saying "im just the mechanic", and our protagonists "mercifully" let him go... LOL? so how about the guards? isn't them just some hired gun? if every human life is equal that you're willing to sacrifice this greatest human biological achievement and its top scientists for one USA marine, how about you spare the equal life of other merely hired guns, guards, anyone else?
Not even to mention the philosophical debate and potential depth wasted in this otherwise decent sci.fi. setting, if you're satisfied with another hollywood brainless one man murdering everyone just in another kind of randomly different background, oh but he's on the right side saving this other random guy/helpless mom or daughter you cared more because of the 5 min of time the movie forced you to remember their names thus emotions invested in, you've found the right one to watch, but why even this one, the actions, visuals and car chases are short and average at best...
Meitantei Conan: Goka no himawari (2015)
1/10 as a detective movie, 2/10 as an action movie, just horrible
There's neither mystery nor murder, there's hardly even any suspense or twists, except some half assed ridiculously cheap and forced, unnecessary action scenes , just happening for some reason one after another...
Putting aside the main plot that doesn't even make much sense, a motive that is laughable and the ridiculously small amount of detective work that is almost negligible in a DETECTIVE movie, you can see exactly what the director really wanted in this film, the action scenes of various critical conditions like explosion of airplanes, collapses of big buildings, etc where our main protagonists are in and are supposed to be in the danger, acting as the main suspense and view point of the movie,,, except that we're all 100% aware that these characters like Conan, Ran, Mori, etc will never even even int the slightest danger of death possible, so these actions scenes are even more pointless and brainless, and Im not even talking about the ridiculousness of how every action scene was resolved in a story that is supposed to be realistic.
so overall this new movie in this well-known DETECTIVE franchise has nothing "detective" to offer, except some forced and cheap action scenes that doesn't even make much sense and are there for the solely purpose of trying its hardest to imitate hollywood high budget action movies, I found this pile of mess hardly anything other than a total waste of time.
+one star for the animation quality
