The Wheel of Time: What Was Meant to Be (2023)
Pushed the show to a new level.
I'm not going to give it 10/10, because I feel like there's always room for improvement. But this was about as close to 10/10 as you could get. They saved everything until the last episode. There was more grit, more emotion, more everything in this episode, it was unreal.
Egwene's storyline was EASILY the best part of the series. The actress really came into her own. I think they did the Suldam and Damane perfectly and I'm intrigued to see where Egwene's story goes next.
The structure of the season was miles better than the first season. Characters actually did things. More interesting things happened, and the show runners definitely listened to the complaints from season 1. Everything felt more rounded, more deliberate. They really knocked it out of the park.
Mat blowing the horn was honestly epic. Better than I could have imagined a TV show would make it. Absolutely amazing.
I'm just hyped to see where they can take this show next season, because season 2 showed me what this show is really capable of. And I am dying to see it.
The Traitors UK (2022)
Amazing.
I hope this gets renewed for another season. The contestants were varied, I was on the edge of my seat several times. The show felt fresh and wasn't just a bunch of young influencer types, but a real proper diverse cast of normal people.
The setting was fantastic, the tension, backstabbing, and mind games were phenomenal. Easily the best reality show I've probably ever seen. Blows crap like I'm a Celeb out of the water.
Wilf was so close but made a massive mistake stirring everyone up to vote for Keiran, who rightly so signed Wilfs death warrant in the last episode. No doubt in my mind, if Wilf had stuck with Keiran and not betrayed him, Wilf would have stayed at the end and won the entire prize pot.
Genius show, don't care what anyone says. Renew this for season 2.
House of the Dragon: The Black Queen (2022)
A masterpiece.
This episode was possibly my favourite of the season. Great cinematography, music, dialogue and plot. This episode reminded me why I love this universe so much, and really did take me back to those early days of Game of Thrones.
Emma D'Arcy knocked it out of the park once again with her acting and proved that she was a fantastic choice to play older Rhaenyra. Matt Smith really shone in this episode too, probably because he had more lines than any other episode he was in.
The ending was absolutely brutal. Even though I knew what was going to happen, it was still shocking, and I love the change which gives Aemond more depth than how this event supposedly went down in the books. The size and scale of Vhaegar in this episode was breath taking, which made Arrax and Lukes death even sadder. Watching the smaller dragon desperately flapping its wings through the storm while Vhaegar loomed above, you just can't help feel so bad for that small dragon and its rider.
Overall, great finale to a great season. Sure, there were a few hiccups along the way, but what show is actually perfect?
House of the Dragon: We Light the Way (2022)
Tense beyond belief.
It seems to me that the same people complaining about the Michael Bay level of action in season 8, are now moaning that there's not enough action here. Be honest, what do you people actually want?
The amount of subtle relationships, conflicts, and nods in this episode was staggering. This episode did things that most people wouldn't have even noticed unless they knew the whole story. And it did them masterfully. The buildup, the music, the subtle introductions of key characters. Genius.
People say this show is too slow and boring. The show has a time skip every episode but still manages to give every episode time to breath. That's magnificent pacing in my opinion. People on Westeros dot org are moaning about the dialogue, but the show would never be good enough for the big brains over on that site.
People fail to realise that the first half of this season has been putting the players in place and setting up the central conflicts and characters that'll be seen as the show goes on. If we just went straight into the action, people would have complained there wasn't enough back story. You literally can't win.
People complain there aren't enough dragons. Do you realise that the dragon battles down the line are going to blow anything GoT ever did out of the water? The scope and size of some of the future scenes are going to be truly remarkable to witness. But nah, we need a dragon battle every episode to keep our social media ruined brains entertained.
People complain that watching two young girls have drama is not good tv. That's literally the plot. That's what George wrote. If you don't like that, you seriously may as well stop watching.
Honestly, if the show is that boring or bad to you, just stop watching and reviewing it. There is absolutely no need for you to carry on if you genuinely feel this way.
This episode was damn good, full of tension and intrigue, building relationships and conflicts ready for the rest of the season. Considered knocking one point off purely for the fact that Rhea Royce's actress was absolutely terrible, but I'm not going to. Glad she died in her first scene though in all honesty.
House of the Dragon: The Rogue Prince (2022)
Nailed it again.
They've done it again. Fantastic episode full of building conflicts and tension. All the pieces are being moved into place to get the main plot point started, yet it doesn't feel rushed or too fast paced. Masterfully done. This episode even looked better than episode 1, clearer and more refined. The costumes are absolutely amazing. Rhaenyra is definitely going to be a fan favourite, and Daemon/Corlys partnership is shaping up to become epic. The Crabfeeder looked INCREDIBLE. Such a unique look. And to those upset with the intro, they were never going to be able to top GoT intro music, so why not just keep it the same? I certainly am not going to moan that I have to listen to that epic theme song every week! Again, it feels great to be back in this world. There's truly nothing like a show set in Westeros.
House of the Dragon: The Heirs of the Dragon (2022)
A fantastic start.
I'll basically echo what everyone else is saying. This was a great opening episode with fantastic cinematography, dialogue, acting, CGI, everything. It's Westeros, but it's also its own show, if that makes any sense. I love how scenes were given time to breathe, such as every scene involving the small council. Matt Smith, Milly Alcock, and Rhys Ifans stole the show with their acting. Even minor characters left an impression. It wouldn't be Thrones/ASOIAF without some disturbing stuff going on, the birth scene was peak Thrones, disturbing and uncomfortable, but likely a very common problem several hundred years ago and I'm glad the scene wasn't shied away from. The characters are interesting in their own ways, and I'm really excited to see them grow and what happens next. It's great to be back in Westeros and to have some brutal, dark television on once again. Brilliantly shot, fantastic direction and editing. This will blow Witcher and WoT out of the water. HBO has another hit on their hands, mark my words.
Mr. Robot: 407 Proxy Authentication Required (2019)
People saying this ruins Mr Robots character, don't understand the show.
First off, I've seen reviews saying this was a character assassination of the Mr Robot character. The fundamental thing people aren't realising here, is that Mr Robot is not Elliott's dad. He just LOOKS like Elliott's dad, because that's how he created him. Elliott made Mr Robot in his dad's image to give him comfort and block out the painful memories. This isn't a character assassination at all. Because it isn't even the same character.
That said, this was an absolute masterpiece of an episode, possibly one of the best pieces of TV I've ever seen. The realisation of Elliott's past was devastating to behold, and the buildup and tension to it being revealed was unlike anything I've seen before. I had wondered several times during the episode just what in the hell Vera was doing back. What was the point? What was he adding to the story? But Sam Esmail managed to write his character back in (and out) in such a clever way, I can't even describe how well it worked.
Truly a dark, twisted, edge of your seat, mind blowing, amazingly acted and shot episode of TV. And if people give it anything lower than a 10, I'm sorry but you're wrong, and you literally don't understand the series. I've never said that before, but it's true. This episode was genius.
The Wheel of Time: The Dragon Reborn (2021)
The turning point for the show, absolutely epic.
This episode was incredible. It feels like a real TV show now, with lots of human moments, character development, explanations of the various terms that have been thrown around throughout each episode. I was blown away by how good this one was. Logaine was fantastic, Nynaeve came into her own, Rand seems better, Liandrin is amazing. This will be the turning point for this show and will hook a lot of people.
The battle in the woods was well done, and the explosions and powers felt real and destructive.
The scene with the Fade was eerie as hell and looked amazing.
Can't say enough good things about this episode. Best episode so far without a doubt. It's elevated the entire show.
The Wheel of Time (2021)
Not nearly as bad as people claim.
I'm going to keep this short. First off, the only real issues I have with the show are to do with the CGI and effects, and the occasional sound issues. The effects can either be really good, or pretty damn bad. Hopefully the show runners take this into account going forward. Often times, it's hard to hear what some of the characters are saying, especially Rand and Perrin. They speak quietly and the sound effects or music is too loud in the mix compared.
Anyway, those are the biggest complaints I've got. Sure, episode one was a bit of a mess and rather clunky and rushed, but the inciting incident had to happen early on to kick off the adventure imo.
I'm really surprised by how much I like all the characters. I was initially worried about the casting choices, but they work really well on screen. Mat is easily the best character and it's a shame he's being recast for S2. Egwene is equally good. Rand I probably like the least and he can come across a little wooden at times, but the actor will find his feet I'm sure.
The look of the show is actually better than I thought it'd be. The tone does feel right. It doesn't feel TOO campy but also, not too serious either. I feel they found a decent balance here. The locations are gorgeous.
Episodes 2 and 3 were fantastic because they slowed down and gave us good character interactions, and helped to reveal character traits in a decent way.
I don't want to ramble on, the show definitely isn't perfect, but in my eyes they've given it a good bloody go, even with the changes from the books. I feel like it's only getting better as it goes on, and could be something really special as it finds itself in seasons 2 and 3.
Really looking forward to episode 4.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
I feel dead inside.
My god, where to begin? This film is a complete, and total mess from start to finish. Palpatine is pathetic. Lando was only included for nostalgia. So much stuff in this movie is revealed like it was meant to be that way all along.
This film actively retcons huge parts of The Last Jedi. It feels like a boxing match between JJ and RJ. The humour is over the top. The exposition is in your face and dreadful.
This film has absolutely no balls whatsoever. Fake out after fake out.
Leia dies for absolutely no reason. Palpatine returning is never explained. Rey is a Palpatine for reasons, and then steals the Skywalkers name at the end.
The plot is a mess. Everyone's got to go somewhere to find something. Then they've got to go somewhere else to find...another thing. Kylo Ren just shows up constantly. Adam Driver deserves so much more than this garbage.
Poe was wasted in the space battle. Palpatine just happens to pull 1000 star destroyers and an entire army out of his ass. Ghosts can catch lightsabers. Rey can jump 100ft in the air, heal people, all sorts of crazy stuff. She even tries to randomly exile herself like Luke, and straight up says to him "I'm doing what you did".
Luke looks like a dirty hippy. Horses in space. My god, I could go on and on. When I left TLJ, at least I was actually TORN on the movie. This is just straight up GARBAGE, instant hatred for this movie. A pathetic movie. A pathetic end to Star Wars. Absolutely mortifying. I feel completely numb. I didn't think the leaks could be THIS bad. Wow, I was wrong. Utterly, utterly wrong. This movie will bomb hard.
Breaking Bad (2008)
The best television show of all time.
It is no exaggeration. This is, literally, the best show that's ever been made. Bar none.I have seen it 3 times through, and nothing compares to it. The only thing I can think of would be seasons 1-4 of GoT, but that all went downhill.
Breaking bad has amazing acting, characters, stories, villains, dialogue. You name it. I would recommend it to absolutely everyone.
10/10. Nothing will ever top it.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Still better than Black Panther.
This movie isn't THAT bad. It's not amazing. But to me, it's a good movie. I enjoyed the way they layered Carol's back story throughout the movie. I thought the movie looked great, and had some really cool fight scenes. The middle of the film isn't great though, and is kind of boring. but the final 30-40 minutes are fantastic. It's just above average for me, which is why it gets a 6.
Venom (2018)
Fun movie. Tom Hardy kills it!
This was a good movie. Tom Hardy was great as Eddie/Venom, and I couldn't imagine anyone else in the role. It's a good looking film, with some great effects. The back and forth banter between Eddie/Venom was done well, and there are genuine laugh out loud moments. The after credits scene with Cletus Kasady has me hyped for seeing Carnage on the big screen. Sure the film was a little dated feeling at times, but don't let that or the critics put you off.
Annihilation (2018)
No idea what I just watched.
I don't leave many reviews. I felt I had to leave one for this movie.
This movie didn't know what it wanted to be. A few women get put together and thrown into the Shimmer. For some reason, this odd adventure movie suddenly turns into a horror film. Everything I've read, there are people praising the bear scene as some of the most disturbing stuff they've ever seen. Really? I mean, come on. It was tame. There was nothing disturbing or even interesting about it. A mutated bear arrives and rips someone's face off. Big deal.
Then for some reason, everyone dies or disappears, and Portman is left alone. Right. OK. She somehow manages to make it to the lighthouse without encountering any other barrier or anything hostile. What follows is just pure nonsense. Strange purely for the sake of being strange. Pretentious, boring, uninteresting crap. Nothing makes sense, nothing gets answered, you're left sitting staring at the TV wondering what the hell just happened. Because the movie takes a serious plummet in quality about 3/4 of the way in.
Overall, the movie was messy, the tone was all over the place. And it changes genres way too much.
Lastly, what was the point in the affair plot line? It could have been cut all together.
Meh.
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Fantastic in every way.
Great casting for Han and Lando. A lot of twists, throwback and small "aha" moments. Great costumes. The old Star Wars music was used sparingly and worked very well. The movie was great fun from start to finish. Don't listen to the fan boy haters. This is a great star wars movie!
Neighbors (2014)
Laughed a lot.
I'm actually pretty surprised with the amount of bad reviews about this movie. This is the first comedy in ages that actually made me laugh hard, and often. Some scenes had me in actual tears, definitely the funniest Rogen film in ages. (yes I know he has been in some pretty bad films, but he's also been in some hilarious ones) Yes there were a few awkward scenes, I can admit that. But the whole premise of the movie and the way it was delivered was enjoyable. So much hate for comedies these days, I have seen a lot of comedies that were no where near as funny as this film. SO please stop all the hate and lighten up a bit, this was a funny movie and I would gladly watch it again.
Spawn (1997)
Hahahahahaha, absolutely devastated by this movie.
I can't actually come to terms with what I've just watched. This is easily one of the worst films I have ever seen in my entire life. And I love Spawn, I love the character, the animated series blew me away and I've seen it multiple times. This film completely misses the point about Spawn. It wasn't gritty and dark like the original series or the comic books. The Spawn character was absolutely dreadful and portrayed completely wrong, the part where he burst through the roof and started shooting everyone is just appalling, especially that soon after being turned into Spawn, that just didn't happen. The film seems to want to portray him as more of a bad-ass gun-wielding hero which isn't what the original Spawn stories were about. They were about him trying to come to terms with his emotions and his new life, living in the allies, trying to figure out what happened. This was an abomination, the acting: terrible, the story: terrible, special effects? Ha, absolutely laughable. The scene when they were in hell, towards the end, is just the worst thing I have ever seen in any movie. So bad. Very very disappointed with this and I absolutely love Spawn.
