Garden State (2004)
What more could you ask for in a movie?
I saw it in the theaters. I bought the DVD. I can watch this movie over and over again and still feel the emotion that I felt the first time I saw it. Zach Braff? Who knew? The story of a young man who has felt numb to everything since he was old enough to feel mature emotion runs directly parallel to every young person today. We are being pulled at from every angle to do this and do that and that we can change the world. AHHHHHH!! Our only choice for sanity is to block it all out and accept our numbness. But then again, as Andrew Largeman did, sooner or later we have to say "Screw it!" and put our anesthetic of numbness away and start living again. No matter the extent of the pain. This movie is as inspirational as it is true. I wish we all had the strength to say "Here I am world. Give me your worst." Because that's life and we can't have the good without the bad.
Perfect movie for this young generation.
In Good Company (2004)
Finally, a 100% satisfying movie.
I was waiting for this movie to come out for about six months. When I walked into the theater my expectations were as high as they could be and I am happy to report that I was in no way disappointed. Since the opening day, I have gone with several people to see this again, again, and again. Many of the movies I've seen lately have been good (i.e. Finding Neverland, What The "bleep" Do We Know, Sideways), but they were all missing something. What did this one have that others didn't, you ask? I'm not sure, but I was completely satisfied with every aspect of this film. Direction by Paul Weitz was wonderful. (Notice how on the trailers it says "From the director of 'About A Boy'" and not "From the director of 'American Pie'") He has proved that he is very talented. With this exceptional script, I don't think any actors could've screwed this up. Some might have made it average, but it couldn't have flopped. With this cast, this movie soared. It surpassed my expectations. Now I just can't wait for it to come out on DVD!
Around the Bend (2004)
Good movie, Bad soundtrack
I thought this movie was great, but there was so much potential trying to escape from the script. The setting, the screenplay, the actors, and the theme were all wonderful. The only thing that I did not like was the music. About 90% of the background music was either misplaced or just plain wrong for this movie. In a movie, the right music can add volumes to an expression or an emotion that the director is trying to exult from an audience. If this movie had been scored better, my rating would have probably gone up two, maybe three points. Christopher Walken's expressions alone would've held the movie, but when I saw the look on his face, which is always powerful, accompanied by an unequaled tune, I couldn't feel what I was meant to feel. Great movie. Bad music.
