Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
What legacy films should be.
I love the original 1986 film and I wasn't even alive when it was released lol. When I was younger I was pretty obsessed with movies (tbh I'm still that way with movies) and Top Gun was a movie I watched over and over until I wore out the VHS. My mom even nicknamed me Goose because of this movie. I was super skeptical when I saw they were making a sequel because most of the times they're awful cash grabs just trying to make money off the popularity of the original.
That's not the case with this sequel. Everyone actor is on their A-game and the plot has a purpose. The action sequences are amazing and you can tell how much work they put into this movie to improve on the limitations of the original. I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise what with all the Scientology stuff but he brings so much emotion that I believe is very genuine. Miles Teller is perfect as Rooster, the similarity between him and Anthony Edwards is uncanny. Also, Miles Teller is an absolute stud and the beach scene of him shirtless is worth the price of admission alone.
The only negative for me is the romance. It wasn't necessary to the story and if you weren't a hardcore fan of the first movie you wouldn't even get the callback to the Penny Benjamin that Goose mentions in passing at the beginning being this Penny.
Overall, this movie is a 10/10 for me and will be an immediate buy once it comes to Blu-ray. I've already seen it in the theater twice and I'm sure will see it as least once more. If you're a fan of the first, you can't go wrong seeing this one.
The Outsiders (1983)
Classic 80s
I love this movie. It had so many of the quintessential actors of the 80s and pretty much jump started all of their careers. I remember watching this in my 7th grade English class after we read the novel as a class and it was always such a good memory.
I recently watched the "Complete Novel" version that Coppola wanted released from the beginning but the studio felt it was too long. Honestly I'm glad I didn't see this original cut because I don't think I'd have loved the movie as much. While I did enjoy the extended and added scenes, the music that was added to the movie absolutely ruined it for me. There were SO many scenes that lost all emotion or tension because of the weird music they decided to play over the scene. Like it reminded me of music you would hear in some cheesy beach music or music that The Beach Boys would make. It was so out of pocket and ruined every scene it played over. Plus it drowned out the dialogue it was so loudly dubbed in. For example the scene where Dally gets killed by police, that music that is playing makes the scene feel like it's supposed to be funny, not that a character is dying. As much as I loved the extra scenes in this version, I don't think I'll ever watch that version again. Make sure to get the theatrical cut when you watch it for the first time.
After We Fell (2021)
Disappointment
I won't lie, I've read all of these books probably within a month and I love them. I've been hyped for this movie since I first saw the trailers and I enjoyed the first two even though they obviously weren't perfect.
I love Hero and Jo and feel like their acting is so much better than this movie. It felt like random scenes were spliced together with no flow or coherency towards a plot. Scenes that needed extra time to flesh out and develop were just abruptly cut off with no rhyme or reason. There is no character development and you don't have time to connect with any of the characters because all the scenes are so short and choppy. It's frustrating because the director bragged so much about "sticking to the books' when she really didn't. For example, Tessa's dad is MAJOR plot point in the third book, but they share what, two scenes together? So when the event that happens to him in the beginning of After Ever Happy I'm going really be hard pressed to believe Tessa's emotion since she spent virtually no time with him.
Also, the cast changes were very distracting. I understand why they had to do it but it was just kinda weird. Like the character of Vance, he has no accent in the second one but now has an accent?
Overall, I feel like the director just wanted to cram in as many sex scenes, which weren't really even as good as imagined from the book and of course they both orgasm after like 10 seconds. I get it's not supposed to be smut or anything but they have an R rating so I feel like they could have done better than that.
I just hope After Ever Happy will somewhat improve the story but I definitely won't be paying to watch it.
Dune (2021)
Unbelievable
Frank Herbert would be so proud.
This lived up to the expectations I set for it and then some. I will definitely be making as many trips as I can while this is still in theaters.
Fear Street: 1994 (2021)
Disappointment
I grew up with these R. L. Stine stories and I was excited when I saw these finally came to Netflix. I also was a 90s baby so that probably makes me a little more judgmental when they make a movie about the decade I grew up in.
First off, the main character Deena is EXTREMELY unlikable. She's a whiny little brat and is mean to everyone around her. She breaks up with her girlfriend because she moved to a town 30 minutes away, I guess cars didn't exist in the 90s? Then she guilt trips/shames her ex girlfriend for not coming out publicly. Like straight up berates her. The really only likable characters were Josh the little brother, and Simon.
Secondly, they really try to ham fist in 90s nostalgia. It's not 1994 just because you play random songs from the 90s. Honestly the only thing that gives it away that it doesn't take place in the present is the fact no one has cellphones.
Overall I think if they just set this in present day and not based it on a pretty beloved children's book series it probably wouldn't have been such a disappointment. It's not the worst movie I've ever seen by any means but just not what I was hoping for.
The Green Mile (1999)
Masterpiece
I'm good at some things but not crying through this movie is not one of those things.
Hacksaw Ridge (2016)
Absolutely moving.
I've seen this movie twice in theaters already and can't wait to see it again. This movie is totally immersive, the combat scenes make you feel like you're really there. I have a whole new respect for Andrew Garfield because now that I've seen it, I couldn't picture anyone else in this role. You can tell he took a lot of pride in his depiction of Doss.Vince Vaughn was also really good in his role which was a surprise since he sticks to comedy most of the time. It was also a different shift of focus for a WWII film since most cover the fighting that took place in Germany. I think being from Lynchburg, VA myself allows me to feel extra pride in this story of a hero from my home town. If you haven't already, I can't recommend to see this movie enough.
Crimson Peak (2015)
This movie was good but horribly marketed.
I enjoyed this movie, the set pieces and costumes were gorgeous and obviously well researched. The acting was good, especially from Jessica Chastain. Unfortunately I believe this movie wasn't marketed correctly. I went into this movie thinking it was a horror movie, it wasn't. Although there were creepy looking ghosts in it, you could have easily taken out the ghosts and the story would have remained exactly the same. The ghosts did nothing to further the story and were there purely for the main character to follow while holding a candle in the middle of the night. There were a few jump scares here and there but overall, there really wasn't anything horror about this movie. And of course, this movie was rife with movie tropes that have been run into the ground by many other TV shows and movies. Overall, I would watch this movie again but I don't think I would buy it.
Evil Dead (2013)
This movie is. so. bad.
I just finished watching this movie and I'm just sitting here wondering how and why this movie even got made... It is probably one of the worst horror movies I've ever had the misfortune to watch. It honestly has no coherent plot except what it ripped from the original (which I don't understand who decided that movie needed a remake because it's an amazing classic). The characters in this movie are some of the stupidest I've ever seen. Honestly, all of them deserved to die. So when you find a book that's bound in human flesh your FIRST instinct is to read from said book? Oh your sister is possessed by a demon and is basically infecting everyone with it but let's not kill her because she starts singing a song from your childhood? You want to go down in the basement with her even though she's killed practically everyone? I didn't root for any of these characters. Whenever the possessed people would talk I found myself just laughing because it was so forced. It's like they were trying to be scary and intimidating but it just came off like characters from Scary Movie. The actors in this movie have the intelligence of a bag of rocks and the acting range of Kristen Stewart.
This movie is also torture porn at it's finest. Why do directors think this gruesome violence makes for good film making? I mean this bitch gets raped by a tree. What..? Then she starts infecting everyone like an STD or something, even forcing one girl to make out with her after she's split her tongue in half with a box cutter. It's basically blood on top of blood mixed in with other bodily fluids. At one point a girl gets her arm pinned under a car while some demon is crawling towards her. So she rips her arm out from under the car and is able to get up and pick up a chainsaw to kill the demon. No shock? She didn't pass out from unimaginable pain that would have caused? I'm also glad that a human arm can be ripped off like it's made of jelly and it has no ligaments, tendons, or bone. Hooray for realism! I understand horror movies are not about realism but come on, you can do better than that. I DVRed this movie and actually found myself checking to see if it was almost over. It's so bad, don't waste your time. Glad I didn't see this movie in the theater. Hollywood, please, for the love of all that is holy, STOP DOING REMAKES.
