Lost (2004)
Fool me, its okay.
LOST, some show about a bunch of Americans stranded on an island. Thats what I thought. Then a friend gave me the first three seasons on DVD...
All my suspicions about the show proofed right. Some people crash on an island and due to some weird 'TV show' reasons they can't be rescued/ leave the island. The writers introduce a group of hostiles, some monsters and most important: mystical aspects about THE island and the plane crash (using all common topics from "science" to "psychics" or "fate") And all this goes from one cliffhanger to another...
So why watch this?! Because it is so bloody well crafted. The actors are terrific, the dialogs are smart but believable, the camera work is dynamic and catches the solitude of the beautiful settings (lotta green on the screen) and most importantly the character development is excellent (except some strange 'wanna be' character relations in later seasons).
For me, it is clearly no masterpiece. I don't feel like I am witnessing true art while I watch LOST. And I know that most of the time the authors are just fooling me around... but its great entertainment. I look forward to the upcoming seasons and I am glad to have a high quality TV narrative that I can follow till 'apparently' 2010.
8/10
I... comme Icare (1979)
classic.
In every aspect a true classic. Brilliant script, good camera work plus the outraging performance of the french actors. I see no necessity whatsoever to draw a comparison to "JFK" as it was produced 22 years earlier and forms part of a completely different movie genre. Especially enjoyable is also the music in the picture which was surprisingly written by Ennio Morricone and is as usual a delightful experience.
Interesting: Watching the credits at the end, it can be observed that the final shot has the form of an I.
"I as In Icarus".
