Uplifting and moving - very well done.

As a fan of the original cartoon, I also really enjoyed this remake. The songs are as wonderful as ever and the cgi effects really add to the film. The acting seemed very strong to me and the casting is pretty good. I'd definitely recommend seeing this. Will be a classic for future generations.

A clever last 20 minutes don't make up for a badly paced, dull opening 1hr 40 minutes
17 August 2008
Without spoilers this is a film with a very clever ending - so clever that it changes the whole meaning of what has come before in about 20 minutes.

However getting to this point is tedious beyond believe. The rather bland story is told with something akin to a squashed snails pace. The acting from James Macavoy is pretty average, which matches the performances of the rest of the cast.

Overall this is a powerful film, but it's powerful punch is only made possible by the cheap trick played in the last 20 minutes of the film. Worth a watch but not a second viewing.

First half is extremely bad - skip ahead to second half for heaven !
12 August 2008
My best advice with Acorn Antiques the musical is to skip ahead to the second half of the musical (e.g chapter 7 onwards). This is because the first half is ....well....extremely extremely odd. The second half however is the musical you are expecting and you will not be disappointed - great songs and in-jokes.

I hear as the show travelled they did indeed cut out a lot of the first half and God only knows why it made it onto the DVD.

The songs in the second half are superb and you will find yourself singing them for days afterwards. There are also a lot of laugh out loud moments and in-jokes for fans of the original series.

A really good film which will appeal to anyone who has a "techy" sense of humour !

Warning: Spoilers
I'd really recommend this film to anyone who wants a really good laugh and to feel good about life when they come out of the cinema.

Although the film is a little slow to get started, once it does it is extremely funny and culminates in a very good ending.

I was especially impressed by how the writers have used the material in the original book - they have managed to work in most of the key things in the book but perhaps in a slightly different order or with different emphasis. But its all there and incredibly funny ! As with the book its the ideas in this film that shine through and hook you - for example the Bablefish, the idea that we are the 3rd most intelligent beings or just the fact that there is a race who live to produce meaningless forms ! These ideas will appeal to adults and children alike which is quite an achievement as many films are usually only aimed at one group.

One minor gripe would be as to the quality of the special effects - although not bad think more doctor who here than Spielberg.

Please go and see this film - it will make you happy ! If nothing else you will singing "so long and thanks for all the fish" for at least two weeks after ! Martin
