Must watch MASTERPIECE
25 July 2023
I don't even know where to begin with this review. This show has some special magic to it that no other show, and believe me I've seen them all, has. The writing is on another level, they truly understand the human condition. They manage to write a diverse set of characters with such depth that, as they would say, so deep you get the bends. The fact that it came at a time when no other show was writing long story arcs is difficult to wrap my mind around. Not only were they pioneers in that respect, but they did it in such a fashion that no other show since has come close to matching. The actors also deserve a great deal of praise for their superb embodiment of their characters and staying true to them.

When I found this show, I had no idea what I was in for, I actually wasn't aware it was a show as I watched the pilot thinking it was a movie. I was immediately hooked. The atmosphere it captured was unique, both gritty and charming. As the episode was nearing the end I had two thoughts. One, why have I never heard of this before. Two, is there a sequel? To my delight as it closed out and the next episode loaded I ecstatically discovered it was in fact a show, meaning there was still much more of this to come. Little did I know to what degree this show would end up capturing me. From story arc to story arc, and the individual episodes in between, the show kept throwing punches that I could never have anticipated.

Having watched and read various interviews I learned a lot about what went on behind the scenes, and one thing that I find worth noting is how Ken Wahl and David Burke made an effort in persuading Cannell as well as other executives to allow for the show to head in a more cerebral direction and move away from the flashy action that is most present in the first episode. Thankfully they listened which is what gave the show such remarkable depth and gave us episodes that bring out the best of the characters, and allows to explore them further to get in touch with the real things that make us in the audience connect with them. This shows lowest points were higher than most shows high points. And for the vast majority of this shows run it soared.

All in all, if you happen to be reading this and you have yet to watch Wiseguy, forget about whatever else you're watching and give this show a spin. You will surely not regret it.

Good show even if biased and revisionist
25 April 2023
Thoroughly enjoyed this show though I have a soft spot for time travel plots. Good showcase of historical events even if there are a few that are fairly revisionist with a left wing (in the modern sense) bias but I'm honestly not surprised given the state of tv and movies in modern times.d Regardless, if you put thoae aside and enjoy the show for what it is the story writing and characters are done quite well. Worth a watch, just take the time to do your own research about the historical facts since the show does take some liberty with them. If they had avoided making some choices that display their bias I would have probably rated this show a 9/10.

Legendary show

I was hesitant about this show before I started watching because I knew it had 12 seasons, I haven't encountered a quality show that had gone on that long before, usually they're mediocre at best if they last that long ironically enough. This show on the other hand is the exception. Had me hooked after a few episodes and it never dropped in quality the whole way through. Incredible writing, incredible characters, I don't know what more there is to say. I'm still amazed, that a cop drama where in most cases every episode is a new case, can go on for so long without getting old. But it doesn't get old. The story surrounding the characters, watching their stories unfold, is crafted with genius paired with great actors such as Dennis Franz. Nothing about this show feels cheap. Every bit of dialog is clearly written with a lot of thought put into it, whether it be witty, comedic, serious, or anything else. I can't recommend this show enough. Watch it!

Do not hesitate to watch this show

Two months ago I ran out of good shows to watch, so I searched for suggestions here and there, and after a while I came across this show. Judging by just the description I assumed it was gimmicky and something that would get old very fast. Well I just finished season 4 (grand total of 86 episodes) and I still can't get enough. The reason why this show is great is because it has a very strong formula. 1. Witty plot. Overall most episodes have a very neat and innovative plot that makes the mystery all that more enjoyable. 2. Great character personalities and bonding. Seeing the characters go through the motions and find out what drives them and what brings them down makes it quite enjoyable to watch. I personally can't watch shows with bleak characters (24 for example), and trust me when I say that this is a polar opposite. 3. The over- arching plot. While each episode has a plot, the Red John plot is the one you want to see the most. The way things mix in and tie in makes it extremely captivating and can hit you at the most unexpected moments. I must say that there have been things in this show that have surprised and shocked me more than anything else I've seen. I could go on, but really just watch the first scene of the first episode and you'll be hooked. If I were to make a comparison to any show, I think fans of Castle would love this.

Big hype but falls short.

I gave it a shot. Pilot was mediocre but I continued to watch. Second episode was better, but still very unstable. By the third episode I had made my verdict that this show is quite disappointing considering what it potentially could have been.

The plot is pretty decent so far, what with the rivals who both have chips, and the mystery behind Amelia.

Unfortunately, the characters are incredibly shallow. They don't really have any real emotions towards one another, and there is very little internal conflict. The show should focus on Gabriel and Riley because they are the only thing holding this show together at the moment. Lilian is a very bland character, and the writers attempts at comic relief through the doctor and the son are very annoying and poorly done. Amos was another character who served absolutely no purpose.

This show has been extremely sloppy so far. I love shows like Chuck, Person Of Interest, Burn Notice, Lost, Castle, but this show doesn't come close to any of these.

This show is destined to fail, because on its current course, it doesn't stand a chance in the battle for Monday night.

Batman without the spandex and carnival freaks

I hesitated to watch this show for some time, but recently bit the bullet and decided to check it out. Right from the pilot I was sold. The action, the mystery, it's all wrapped up in a dark package begging to be opened. I've only started watching two days ago yet I've already seen the first 12 episodes. With every new episode I watch a new mystery is unveiled, leaving me with more anticipation.

John Reese's character shares a similar darkness akin to Batman, but Reese is not afraid to use a gun. Harold Finch likewise shares a similarity to Alfred. The man behind the computer giving intelligence to his partner. You might be able to argue that Detective Carter is similar to Captain Gordon, and I could go on and on about how much these characters remind me of Batman, but in truth these characters are very well done, each with their own deep back story to be explored. Person Of Interest shares this same trait with Lost, which I believe is one of the primary reasons for its success.

I'm excited to see where the show will go from here, because there is plenty of room for a lot of intense plot.

Mediocre
1 December 2013
I tried to get into this show. Watched seasons 1 and 2 within a two week time span, and while I do enjoy watching it and seeing the story develop, the show has so many weak points that completely bruise it. Yes, there are great high points such as in *****SPOILER******season 3 where Annie and Simon Fischer are shot by Lena Smith *******END OF SPOILER*******, but the show lacks integrity and showcases very shallow interactions between characters. Annie making such stupid decisions throughout the show takes a lot away since she's the main character. The show is about Annie first and foremost, however Auggie is the true fan favorite. They need to tighten up their story and their characters for this show to be worthwhile.
