Do the Right Thing (1989)
Powerful movie- racially filled
Before watching Do the Right Thing many people told me that it was a really good movie, so I was excited to go see it. After watching it I have to admit those people were right. The movie showed a Brooklyn street during a heat wave in the summer. This block was mostly African Americans however there was a pizzeria owned by Italians as well as a grocery store owned by Koreans. The movie showed how different minority groups view each other. I found it extremely interesting during the montage of racial slurs to see that even groups who are harassed because of their ethnicity still do it to other groups. The end of the movie really surprised me. I figured there would be some sort of clash of the groups however I didn't think that it would explode the way it did. Another part of the movie which really surprised me was how the police were portrayed, as murderers and bigots. One scene in the movie which really stuck with me was when the fire fighters were trying to put out the fire and they used the hose on the African American rioters. This scene to me really showed how not much has changed in some sense since the 1960s. Overall I found this movie to be extremely well done and very powerful and definitely one of Spike Lee's best movies.
Thelma & Louise (1991)
Thelma and Louise= great movie!!!!!!
I recently watched Thelma and Louise. I found this movie to be a very easy to watch and enjoyable film. The two main characters who were played by Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis truly made one watching the film feel as if they are lifetime friends. These two women are traveling across country on a liberating road trip away from the control of men and eventually this innocent trip turns into a run from the police. This movie is a powerful movie about friendship and feminism. It showed how women are becoming more and more like men. This movie in some ways was very similar to another movie I recently watched, Myra Breckenridge. It shows how women are now having more control over their lives and are now controlling men rather have men control them. The movie had a mix of action, drama, and comedy which makes it a great movie for anyone to watch and enjoy it.
Myra Breckinridge (1970)
Good Book ... Why was it ruined?
I recently viewed one of the loathsome movies, Myra Breckinridge. Before watching the movie I had read the novel. There had been a lot of controversy whether or not the book could be made into a movie, I think after watching the movie the answer is NO. I feel that if I had not read the book before hand I would have not been able to follow the plot line and everything that was going on. In the movie the scenes were very choppy and switched back and forth a lot, which made it very confusing. I also felt that the movie didn't follow the book as much as it should have. I think that this was the best attempt to make a movie out of a book that probably shouldn't have been. Even though I feel that it should not have been made into a movie the movie did present a number of controversial topics to the American public at a time where these topics were becoming more and more mainstream. Some of these topics include, homosexuality, transsexual, switching of gender roles and many other things that people were tending to experiment with more at this time. I think that it brought to light many of these topics however it was not true to Gore Vidal's book.
Skammen (1968)
Skammen - a bit disappointing
I felt that the movie Skammen, directed by Ingmar Bergman, was very dry. It shows the things people will do to survive during a war and the shame that comes out of these actions; however I feel that it was not complete or attention holding. He never fully got into the plot or deep into the character emotions or reasons behind their actions. The only thing that I found rather attention holding in the movie was the transformation of the two main characters, Jan and Eva. Many times during the movie was just the two main characters sitting around or doing their daily chores and not even having a conversation. I understand this was to show the reality of these people however I feel there are other ways to show reality and have it be entertaining. I think that Ingmar Bergman could have filmed this movie in a more riveting way.
Roger & Me (1989)
my realizations of big businesses and Micheal Moore's lies
I recently saw the Michael Moore documentary, Roger & Me. I was aware that it was about the GM Corporation but I really wasn't sure about anything else. I didn't know anything about Flint, Michigan or even that it was where GM began its corporation. As I began watching it I found the hardships which these people faced due to the GM factory closings were awful. This documentary showed what happens to the workers and the surrounding area of these "American" companies when they relocate the factories to Mexico and oversees in order to save money. It was a real eye-opener to what happened in Flint, Michigan however I feel the way that Moore went about getting footage was not right. He was very pushy in his interviews and I feel that he was not sympathetic to the families that were being evicted and the hardships they were facing. The actual footage itself was very deceptive. He showed events in what would have been thought of as chronological order when in fact many of the events had occurred before the closing of the factories actually took place. This enraged me a little bit; due to the fact that I felt lied to and I couldn't really rely on anything else which was shown because I questioned its accuracy. I also feel that the whole point of the documentary, to get Roger Smith, the CEO of GM, to come to Flint was a pointless attempt. I don't see what could have been accomplished if Roger did come to Flint. Overall I feel that this documentary did its job, which was to show was happened in Flint and what happens when these big businesses move their factories overseas or in this case to Mexico.
