The Upside (2017)
Watered down remake
Not a bad remake by any means, as it happens when you take a working plot and adapt it. However:
1. There's a serious lack of chemistry between the leads. What Francois Cluzet and Omar Sy has in the original film was magical and the big reason the movie got an Oscar. The remake just shows how a couple of actors go through motions for a paycheque.
2. The score in the original complemented the scenes much better, the remake is a bit too opera-heavy, perhaps trying to add sophistication to the movie, but it's just not working.
3. Some jokes seem dumbed down for the average American viewer and a bit forced. Matter of taste, I suppose.
Other than that, it's the same movie as the French version, down to minute details.
Entourage (2015)
A 2-hour episode of Entourage
People who walked into the theater expecting to see something different only have themselves to blame. The show and the movie are both lifestyle porn - nice cars, scantily clad women, carefree lifestyle and, of course, gratuitous nudity and use of profane language. That's it. It is not bringing any artistic merit to the table, but nor is it claiming to be. To put it bluntly - if you were a fan of the show, go see it, it's pretty much more of the same. You get some cameos from whoever flavor of the month is today, E deals with girl problems, Drama is being Drama, Ari provides much needed comic relief. Lloyd is just there for diversity, I guess. If you haven't seen the show or didn't like it for whatever reason - go see something else. It's not for you. Trust me.
Child 44 (2015)
Reviewers, stop making it political, nobody bloody cares!
I had to register just to write this: stop making a big deal out of this movie. Nobody really cares what Moscow was like in the 30's or your ticket prices, or your perception of socialism! This is a FICTIONAL movie, filled with FICTIONAL characters in a FICTIONAL historical context, not a propaganda piece. So stop making fools out of yourselves, for all of our sakes.
P.S. As for the movie, it was weak - poor acting, lukewarm plot, nothing to really pull you in. Gary Oldman, what are you doing, man??? You used to be cool, now you're reduced to make C-grade rubble like this. There are historical inaccuracies, but let's get real, this movie is not claiming to be based on a true story or anything. Could've done the research better, or could've just avoided this whole ordeal entirely. 2/10
