Ghulam (1998)
GHULAM - Guess whose the real hero ?
28 February 2005
Amir plays the role of a confused, frustrated and sensitive "gunda" who lives with the evil but surprisingly knows the difference between right and wrong. His conscious is alive maybe because of something he saw happening to his dad when he was young. It casted a lasting effect on him and it stayed with him all his life. His brother also realizes the difference between the right and the wrong but readily accepts the wrong because he doesn't mind taking shortcuts in life. Excellent performances by Amir Khan and Rani both. The real hero, however, is Ronnie. He gave the best performance of his life. Every single dialog of his is nothing less than Gabbar's from Sholay. Not only does this movie have some great acting, but some excellent screenplay, dialogs, direction, storyline, and songs! One of my favorite Hindi movies of all time. Rating: ****

Poor * Average ** Good *** Excellent **** Masterpiece *****

Black (2005)
10/10
Black Creates History
27 February 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Black is great. It is magical. The direction in this movie is better than some of the movies in Hollywood if not many. I know it sounds crazy, but I was never a fan of Amitabh. I always thought he was a great actor but he wasted himself by picking all the wrong movies. In his entire career, if Amitabh has made some good decisions, Black is stands out as his best one. He acted so well in this movie, it seemed the role was born for him. Its still hard for me to believe a person who did movies like Bade Miyaan Chhote Miyan, Laal Baadshah, Shehenshah, Aks can deliver such an outstanding performance. Amitabh! I am finally .. your fan! Then comes Rani. Rani has always been a good actress but with Black, she proves herself as the best actress the Indian cinema has ever seen. There are some who would think else wise, but I truly have never seen an Indian actress perform this good (That too without no dialogs). Madhuri Dixit, Tabu, Shabana Azmi, Madhubala, Meena Kumari COMBINED cant match Rani's Black performance. Sanjay Leeli Bhansali! Hats off for creating a masterpiece. I always loved Devdas and HDDCS, but Black is just Magic.... Black Magic.

Musafir (2004)
The most Stylized? Maybe! A good movie? Definitely Not!
29 January 2005
I am no critic. I watch movies just to have a good time. I don't get paid to criticize or praise a movie. I will not praise a movie just because it has one of my favorite actors, Sanjay Dutt. Sanjay Dutt is one of the top five actors in India on my list ( Others are Naseeruddin Shah, Amir Khan, Irfan and Om Puri). But its sad to see him doing movies like Rudraksh, Plan, Kaante and all these new formula movies. The only purpose of these new movies is to make the viewers believe we are getting closer to Hollywood but in reality we are giving up our originality and wasting talents like Sanjay Dutt with movies like Musafir. Cleavages, Guns, Leather, Silver, Gold, Drugs can look good in a movie if the movies actually has a storyline, a theme, a SCRIPT! Musafir is nothing but a Suzuki engine inside the body of a Lamborghini. Its all looks but no torque. If you liked Kaante then you will probably like this movie because both those movies have something in common, they're both "kool" but have no substance.

Arguably the best Hindi movie of all time
28 January 2005
The only movie which touches all aspects of real life so closely, you forget you are watching a movie. Therez a Sameer, Sid or Akaash in all of us. Some even have a little bit of Subooth and Rohit in them. Its a story about three friends and their journey into the real life and how it affects their life and their friendship. Akash is the "Know it all" kindda guy who doesn't believe in love or steady relationships. Then there is Sameer (Sam) who believes that there is no get-to-know stage between a "hi" and "i love you". Thats the reason all his relationships fail and since he is so sure that all of them were "true love", it affects him adversely every time. And then there is Sid, the intellectual one, who knows what love is but doesn't know what it can do to you. I think its the best Hindi movie ever made. Its an instant 10 out of 10 for me.
